2 Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles June 29, 2014 Pastor s Note REMAIN IN and GO OUT June 28 July 5 Today we celebrate the solemnity of the Martyrdom of St. Peter and St. Paul. They are celebrated together because they are considered the two pillars of the Church. They petrify two aspects of the Church. Peter represents the authority and the institution and Paul represents the mission of the Church. These two dimensions have a common goal, namely, enhancing others. It is the Petrine ministry and the unique role played by the successor to Peter, the pope what distinguishes us, Catholics from the rest of Christian denominations. Nonetheless, it is Paul who made the Church Catholic in true sense of the term. As an apostle to the people of the world, Paul made the Church universal (catholic). Saturday Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday 5:00 Thelmo Rayos del Sol 7:00 Josephine Fisher 8:30 Dr. Richard Deklotz 10:00 St. Martin Parishioners 11:30 Therese and Cang Truong 6:00 Marsha Trevisan 8:00 Aurora Scapello 8:00 Ben Rios III 8:00 Stacia Borella Today what gives identity to the Catholic Church is this outward orientation powered by its strong organization. After many falls, fractures, illness, hospitalization, convalescing and recuperation, the Catholic Church is almost 2000 years old and still going strong. We are not a fringe group. There are 1.2 billion Catholics in the world. In the U.S alone there are 71 million Catholics that is 20 million more people than what it takes to elect the American President. We are the largest charitable organization in the world. As Mathew Kelly says, The Catholic Church feeds more people, houses more people, clothes more people, takes care of more people, visits more people in prison. It was not some modern government that introduced education to masses. It was the Catholic Church. In the U.S. the Catholic Church has a non-profit hospital system of 637 hospitals, which account for hospital treatment of 1 out of every 5 peoples not just Catholics. Have we forgotten our Catholic story? Let us rediscover it. Please don t let the media or anti Catholics tell our story. Let us remain inside (the Church) and go out to change the world. We are part of a movement Peter and Paul were passionate about and gave their lives for. We are Catholics be proud of it. Is the Catholic Church perfect? No. Was it perfect when Peter and Paul were alive and part of it? No. It will never be perfect as long as you and I are part of it. It is when we are weak we are strong (2 Cor. 12:10) Fr. Abe Thursday Friday Saturday Saturday Sunday Monday Tuesday 8:00 Barbara Grimm and Elijah 8:00 Bill and Rose Busch 8:00 Respect for Life Please keep the following people in your prayers as there was a mistake in the Bulletin last week. According to the National Climatic Data Center report released June 19th, California is experiencing its hottest year on record and the worst drought in the past 40 years. Through May temperatures have been 5 degrees above average. Nearly one third of the state is in exceptional drought, including SF Bay Area and parts of Silicon Valley. While the drought can be compared to the drought of the 1970 s, the population has doubled in the state from twenty to forty million. This means the demands for limited water are much greater. MEMORIES FROM 100 YEARS OF ST. MARTIN'S PARISH If you wish to share your memories and your involvement with the Parish (in our "Anniversary Book") please send your stories ASAP to the church office Betty Ford or to bettyford888@sbcglobal.net. THANKS As bad as the drought is, it seems that some of us in the Bay Area aren t doing our part to reduce our water usage. Bay Area residents have failed to answer the call to voluntarily reduce water usage by twenty percent. In fact San Jose residents have increased water usage compared to At the Green Corner we strongly encourage everyone in our community to seriously review and reduce your water usage. Prayer for Sister Water We praise and thank You, Lord, for the gift of living water. Guide us to use it wisely, learn from its humility, consume it sparingly, and protect its purity, so that with St. Francis, we may truly enjoy water Amen. -Br. 5 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles Through all the earth their voice resounds, and to the ends of the world, their message. Psalm 19:5 Scripture Readings and Question for NEXT Sunday Sunday, July 6, 2014 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Today is an exceptional event on our calendar: the Thirteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time is eclipsed by a solemnity honoring two saints who didn t spend much time together in their earthly ministry, and who have distinct feasts so they probably don t mind sharing this one. Yet each suffered a similar fate in the same city, Rome, during the persecution of the Emperor Nero. Nero probably ordered the destruction of many of the residential neighborhoods in service to his building projects, and when the homeless began to look for someone to blame for the fires, Nero targeted the Christians. Soon, Peter was crucified, upside down, on the Vatican hill. Excavations (called scavi) under the Vatican basilica have proven the authenticity of his burial place near the place of his death. Paul, a Roman citizen, was later granted a swifter execution by sword, and is remembered at a vast basilica on the city s outskirts. Peter and Paul were just about polar opposites. Peter rough and ready, Paul poetic and polished. Peter carried a burden of regret for his denials, Paul had his own issues with which he struggled. Peter leapt over barriers to go to the Gentiles, Paul strove with and surrendered to the same call. True, they spent very little time together in this life, but the same Spirit filled their hearts and by their witness changed the face of the earth. First Reading : Zechariah 9:9-10 Second Reading: Romans 8:9 & Gospel Reading: Matthew 11:25-30 How does the image of God as Abba compare to your experience? How does it speak to you? Summertime is here and so are we!! At St. Martin's RCIA is an ongoing process, which means we are always here to welcome you! We continue to meet each Thursday evening at 7. All are welcome, always!
