2 Easter Sunday of the Resurection of the Lord April1, 2018 Pastor s Note Easter is the answer to Easter is the answer to all our questions. Jesus Christ dying and coming back to life has given to all the world the answer to a question that everyone in different moments of their lives have asked themselves. What is after death the answer is life, a life that doesn t know sunset. For everyone who has lost a loved one, Easter is the answer from the Lord, they are alive. For all those who have suffered in their lives, the Resurrection of the Lord is the key to understanding the present moment, knowing that even though the present sufferings are real, they like Jesus know that suffering and darkness will finish in the joy and light of the Resurrection. Most of all, Easter is the answer to those who search for real love. True love is to give our lives for others. Jesus sacrificed out of love for us. He conquered death and showed us a new way to live, giving the best of us for others, knowing that all the efforts of this life are not lost. They all count for eternal life. Easter is the answer to all the injustice in this world, giving to us the certainty that in the same way that God raised Jesus from death, he will make justice for all of us because what we do in this life has its consequence in the life after this life to which Jesus testifys. Easter is the manifestation of God s love and power because out of love he gave his son for us. Because of his power, he transformed hate into love and death into life by the resurrection of Jesus. This is the central mystery of our Faith and the perfect vision of what we are called to be. Our God, in which we have put our trust, is the God of life, not just because he has life within but because his life is our life. Jesus should always be the reason of our faith. Jesus' resurrection is the most important event of our lives. As St. Paul said:..if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. (1Cor 15:14). The message of Easter is a message of hope, peace and life. The effect of Jesus Christ s Resurrection touches the life of all those who believe because by his cross and resurrection he has conquered the world. "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his great mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, March 31 April 7 Saturday 8:30 Easter Vigil Sunday 7:00 Al Cisneros Monday 8:30 Leslie Plecque 10:00 Justin Semana 11:30 St. Martin of Tours Parishioners 8:00 Right to Life Tuesday 8:00 Mary Mummau Wednesday 8:00 Leonora Cruz Thursday 8:00 Cole Edmonds Friday 8:00 Lincoln & Angeline Steffens Saturday 8:00 Mamerto Barrientos and unfading, kept in heaven for you"(1 Pe 1:3-4). CRS RICE BOWL - EASTER SUNDAY Our celebration of the resurrection brings us new joy and hope! Throughout Lent, we prayed, fasted and gave alms-and now we celebrate! Let us rejoice in our risen Lord, and in the lives we've changed this Lent, not only throughout the world but also within our own community! If you haven t already turned in your Rice Bowls or envelopes, please do so as soon as possible. Thank you for all your efforts during Lent that will continue to change the lives of so many people, both at home and abroad.

Thank you for your Holy Thursday food donations if you missed the opportunity to bring your donations, the barrels are available in the entryways. Have you checked out the Food Box program lately? We have transitioned to a "clientchoice" model, allowing our clients to "shop" for the food that appeals to them. It's a process that provides our clients with a more dignified and personalized approach to receiving assistance. The model is wildly popular with our clients, but requires more volunteers to assist in the shopping process. Please consider joining us for Food Box Distribution every 3 rd Friday at 6pm in the Gym. If you have questions or need information, please contact Karen at (408) Building a Bridge: Catholic Church & LGBT Community Retreat April 6-8 Join Fr. Donal Godfrey, SJ as he leads a retreat based on the recent book by Fr. James Martin, SJ. Fr. Godfrey will lead conversations and guided meditations from the book and other sources on this topic. The retreat is intended for all who wish to build a bridge of openness and compassion within our church for and with LGBTQ+ people. The retreat will be held at San Damiano Retreat, 710 Highland Drive, Danville, CA Please contact San Damiano to register or with questions: or x315. 4/2 4/19 Calendar of Events 4/2 Parish Office CLOSED Scripture Study 6-7:30pm -Bailey House- Acts th Annual Ladies Guild Fashion Show 11am in the Gym Village House - Ready for Volunteer Sign-Ups! Volunteer sign-ups are open now at signup.com/go/yxlfdc! We are getting closer to our hosting gig for the 15 medically-fragile, unhoused women, which will take place May 2-June 6. Volunteer positions are available for everyone -- we need volunteers to prepare and deliver meals, greet the women each night at intake, stay up for a few hours on an overnight shift, and host breakfast each morning. We also need help with laundry and transportation. There is something for everyone! We ask volunteers to attend a brief training session, in which you will receive an overview of the program and specific training for your chosen task. Volunteers who interact with the guests must have their fingerprints on file with the diocese, and this service will be available at the trainings. Please sign up for a training session at This important project takes many volunteers to make it a success (almost 1300 volunteer spots!), and we definitely need your help. During the Easter masses, we will have a 2nd collection to support Village House. Please consider sharing your time, talents, and treasure with these special women. If you have questions or would like to donate, please contact Patrick at (408) We will be collecting old, faded American flags that need to be retired. So many people seem to have them and don't know what to do with them when they are no longer fit for flying. The American Heritage Girls Troop 0319 will be collecting worn, damaged, and faded American flags that are in need of retirement for their upcoming flag retirement ceremony. They will have a retirement ceremony in April and will include any flags that are in need of retiring. Drop Flags off at the Parish Office.

4 Faith Formation Corner We re now starting 50 days of the Easter season so hopefully our Lenten practices have become habits that we can continue. This week s Faith Formation Corner will explore another Confirmation Candidate s question. They ask, Why does God help people with some things, but not others? To address this question, let s consider Jesus journey into the desert and we can see that there are times when God may remain present to use without actively helping. (Mt 4:1-11, Lk 4:1-13, Mk 1:12-13) When Jesus was in the desert he was tempted by the devil. The temptations were challenging, relating to nourishment, trusting God with our lives and worldly power. In each of the temptations we observe Jesus responding on his own, without God s help. Once the temptations were finished, angels came and took care of him. What can this teach us about God helping us? Hopefully, it can teach us that there are times when God may not seem active, but God is aware of what we are experiencing. We can see this by the angels coming to Jesus immediately after the temptations were finished. Hopefully we can also learn that there are times when we need to work through life s experiences on our own so we can grow in confidence as Jesus did before he began his public ministry. In some cases, God may clearly help, but in others God may trust you to grow through the experience by your own effort. If you have a question you d like us to address or a Faith Formation related update you d like to share, please Daniel (dvalcazar@stmartin.org) and I ll do my best to get to it. I look forward to this new way to engage with you! Registration Now Open!: The Diocesan Youth Retreat (DYR) is the annual summer retreat hosted by the Diocese of San Jose s Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministries. The goal of DYR is to gather and empower teen participants to live fully the gospel of Jesus Christ, develop their Catholic identity, instill a zeal for the New Evangelization and celebrate their call to greatness as teens to use their God given gifts to spread the life and light of Christ to all they encounter. Please keep them and the Neophytes throughout the Diocese of San Jose and the world in your prayers as they all enter the Easter season and continue their formation in Mystagogy (Postbaptismal Catechesis). We all have the responsibility to help them grow in their understanding of the Paschal Mystery (Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus). Thank you for your support and prayers!! If you have other questions or would like to join us for Mystagogy, we gather from 7-9 PM each Thursday, so bring your questions and an open heart. All are Welcome, ALWAYS!
