2 IHS Highlights of Life in Our Community Our Parish Life Good for You - Good for Others Details in your bulletin or Parish Directory. Being involved insures the vitality of our parish. COMING EVENTS OF NOTE ORGANIZED PARISH TRIPS Schlafly s Brewery Tour & Dinner Saturday, July 12th Cardinal s & Padre s Baseball Game Sunday August 17th SAVE THE DATE & SPREAD THE WORD Holy Name of Jesus Parish Homecoming Saturday, September 20th, 1:00-10:00pm Celebrating Our Power to Make a Difference Making Today Count I VISITED MAX FOR MORE THAN A YEAR. He was dying of cancer and he kept himself as close to others as he could or they would allow themselves to be. He struggled more with fear than pain, though his persistent smile and genuine interest in how others were doing belied any sense of his own difficulties. Many of us had the following conversation with Max. After spending some time together I would be in the habit of saying, Max, is there anything you need? His response was always the same, Don t leave me alone. The first time it happened, I turned around and sat down on the stool by his chair. He smiled and said he didn t mean for me to stay, but that I should remember to come back. He said he would call and if he didn t, well, I would know when to call or drop by. Often just being there was enough. No great purpose or issue. Sometimes he couldn t stop talking about his hopes and all that he had to live for and wanted for us. Max was a good listener. And, occasionally he needed to talk about the scary things that go bump in the night. What he counted on, and seldom had to ask for, was someone being there. Companionship and conversation fueled his conviction that making today count should be his reason for living. Max knew something like Jesus knew it to love someone, you must invest in getting to know that person. He invested the last year of his life in us, hoping we would pass it on. Our Church is continually being built on the faith of disciples. We are called to know and trust who Jesus is as much as Jesus trusts who we can be. It is not enough to conform ourselves to the externals of what the Church asks or requires of us. We are called to faithfulness staying with the conversation and to fruitfulness making today count. We are called to know we are not alone so that we too may risk and give everything. A FOURTH AND FINAL REPORT TO THE PARISH will be published in next week s bulletin. These reports highlight some of the past year s achievements as well as challenges for the year to come. The phrase A MISSION parish with a MISSION captures some of this. Christ calls the Church to be in marginal places, with marginal people often without many resources. Christ needs the Church in our parish to proclaim the Good News, a Gospel of joy, hope, and generous love. Balancing this tension is never easy nor quickly accomplished. So with a certain sadness I announce these changes in our parish staff. As of July 1st Mrs. Buffy Modde will no longer be assisting Sister Rose in the part time position of Parish Nurse. Mr. David Vaughn, our part time custodian, will now be working 12 hours per week instead of 20 hours. Finally, Mrs. Judy Krenn will now be full time in our school serving as Coordinator of Faith Formation, a new position designed to focus on the faith development of our students and their families as well as our faculty and the community served by our school. Judy will continue with some of her youth ministry responsibilities with the assistance of volunteers from our parish and other parishes of the Deanery. These changes are a part of our effort to balance our parish budget, the focus of next week s report to the parish. Please join me in giving great thanks to God for their generous service in our parish. Pray for them and our parish in this time of transition. No less than ever before may we know that God is with us and that everyone of us has an important gift that God counts on us to share in the mission of our parish.

Yet each suffered a similar fate in the same city, Rome, during the persecution of the Emperor Nero. Nero probably ordered the destruction of many on the residential neighborhoods in service to his building projects, and when the homeless began to look for someone to blame for the fires, Nero targeted the Christians. Soon, Peter was crucified, upside down, on the Vatican hill. Excavations (called scavi) under the Vatican basilica have proven the authenticity of his burial place near the place of his death. Paul, a Roman citizen, was later granted a swifter execution by sword, and is remembered at a vast basilica on the city s outskirts. Peter and Paul were just about polar opposites. Peter rough and ready, Paul poetic and polished. Peter carried a burden of regret for his denials, Paul had his own issues with which he struggled. Peter leapt over barriers to go to the Gentiles, Paul strove with and surrendered to the same. Call. True, they spent very little time together in this life, but the same Spirit filled their hearts and by their witness changed the face of the earth. 5:00pm 10:30am 5:00pm 10:30am 5:00pm 10:30am Saturday, July 5 Barb Ellington Sunday, July 6 John Prose Bill Krenn June 30 July 4 Katy Moran & Linda Byrns Saturday, July 5 Sunday, July 6 Grace & Anna Gerhart Saturday, July 5 Frank & Linda Schneider Sunday, July 6 Bob & Pat Stolte Leslie Vaughn & Tony Albers
