Lent and the Chapel of All Seasons Spiritual Deeds Tree During Lent we invite everyone to participate in a spiritual almsgiving program.

For the first couple of weeks it will remain bare as a symbol of our stripping away all that is superfluous to better focus on God through prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

By the time Easter comes, we should have a wonderful, beautiful tree decorated with all the good deeds our community has done.

3 Lent and the Chapel of All Seasons Spiritual Deeds Tree During Lent we invite everyone to participate in a spiritual almsgiving program. You can participate one time or every day if you wish. Here is how it works: In the Chapel there is a tree that is just bare branches. For the first couple of weeks it will remain bare as a symbol of our stripping away all that is superfluous to better focus on God through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. In the coming weeks there will be placed in the Chapel a basket of flowers. When you do a good deed, take a flower and tie it to the tree. By the time Easter comes, we should have a wonderful, beautiful tree decorated with all the good deeds our community has done. Good deeds can be anything that you do for the Lord: helping a neighbor in need, praying the rosary as a family, getting to work on time every day, smiling as you walk down the street, doing your homework cheerfully, etc. The list is limitless. What you do is up to you. The only requirement is that you do it for the Lord. When Easter comes, you can look at the tree and know that you helped to make it beautiful. 3

For Eastern Catholics and Orthodox, the discipline is close to our understanding of abstinence. Certain foods are eliminated from the diet entirely. The rules are basically monastic rules, and the customs of a monastery table are embraced in the home. This year, Meatfare Sunday is February 26, and it is the last time that meat is admitted to the diet until Easter. The following Sunday, known as Cheesefare Sunday, takes cheese and all dairy products from the table. It is also known as forgiveness Sunday because a true fast is about crowning life with love, holding back harsh words, and cutting off anger. The Eastern churches fast even from celebrating the Eucharist from Monday through Friday. We don t count Sundays as fast days, but Eastern Christians fast through the weekends. People are expected to come as close to the ideal as possible, and the Lenten services keep reminding them not to take pride in their fasting, since the devil himself never eats! What s left on the menu? Grains, vegetables, eggs (maybe), and fish. Imagine the joys of the Easter table after such a fast! Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. LISTEN AND FOLLOW This is my beloved Son. Listen to him. And listen they did. From that moment on, Peter, James, and John were ardent followers, forsaking everything to follow in their Master s footsteps. Like the psalmist crying, O Lord, I am your servant, the three disciples committed themselves to lives of incredible hardship and indescribable joy. After that day on the mountain, they never again wavered in their chosen vocation. Though our tests may not be as severe as Abraham s and our peak experiences not as dramatic as the Transfiguration, we all face the daily challenges of walking before the Lord in the land of the living. Oakland s CROP Hunger Walk, is a 5K walk around Lake Merritt beginning on the Cathedral Plaza on Saturday, April 25 th, 2015. Registration is free and begins at 9:00 a.m.

These Hunger Walks are multicultural, interfaith, community events sponsored by Church World Service with one goal To End Hunger, One Step At A Time!

9 Oakland s CROP Hunger Walk, is a 5K walk around Lake Merritt beginning on the Cathedral Plaza on Saturday, April 25 th, Registration is free and begins at 9:00 a.m. This spring the Bay Area will have 8 Hunger Walks and 5 of these Walks are in communities within the Oakland Diocese. These Hunger Walks are multicultural, interfaith, community events sponsored by Church World Service with one goal To End Hunger, One Step At A Time! CROP Walks reduce hunger in our own community and the world. Seventy five percent of the funds raised are used for donor-designated international relief and twenty five percent of the funds raised are used for local efforts to reduce hunger and the effects of poverty. This year, the local beneficiaries for the Oakland Hunger Walk are: 4% to Alameda County Community Food Bank 7% to St. Vincent de Paul, Cathedral of Christ the Light Conference 7% to Word Assembly Family of Churches, Love N Action feeding program 7% to Oakland's Catholic Worker Many Catholics in our Diocese tend to designate their international aid in support of Catholic Relief Services. However, the idea is not just about getting food to more people. The larger goal is to provide food security with programs that empower communities with sustainable agricultural skills, provide water resources necessary to grow crops, support nutrition education and food diversification, value indigenous knowledge and protect land rights.
