2 The Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 3, 2016 Pastor s Note The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest From the beginning of his ministry, Jesus sees the world s need for more laborers, because the work is abundant. It is the same today, for nothing has changed. We need more laborers. And we need to pray for vocations. When I read the gospel, these words are difficult to understand: Ask the master of the harvest to send out more laborers for his harvest That phase gives the impression that all we need to do is to pray to God, and He will send them. It seems very simple and easy; but these questions arise: Do we pray enough? Does God send laborers? I believe that these questions should be put forward in our prayer. Do we pray for vocations? Pope Francis stresses this point saying: Behind and before every vocation to the priesthood or to the consecrated life there is always the strong and intense prayer of someone: a grandmother, a grandfather, a mother, a father, a community. This is why Jesus said: Pray therefore the Lord of the harvest, that is, God the Father, to send out laborers into his harvest (Mt 9:38). Vocations are born in prayer and from prayer; and only through prayer can they persevere and bear fruit. I personally refuse to believe that the Lord is not still calling people to His harvest. I think He does, but for some reason we are busy with other things and we don t listen, or we don t understand the message. Why? Maybe because we are so very busy doing our own thing that we don t make the time to listen. And when we finally do, we believe that that message is not for us, but for someone else. What happens is that sometimes because we are not familiar with the way God communicates, we are also unfamiliar with spiritual things. Then we cannot recognize or understand His message. Maybe you have heard people say: There are no vocations! Even if we understand the meaning, I believe the expression is wrong, because it implies that God does not call people any more or now is calling fewer people. The truth is that He continues calling, but few respond. There are many factors that help in answering the call. The first one is prayer, as the Lord recommended in today s Gospel passage. Second, we cannot put God as the last priority of our personal, professional or family lives. Finally, take for example the priest: holiness and faithfulness are difficult to achieve; therefore, each community needs to pray for perseverance on behalf of priests, as well as for their continued growth in holiness, and of course we need to ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. I encourage you to pray for those who have already responded to the call, and for those the Lord continues to call, that they will answer the invitation to work in the vineyard of the Lord, and that our own Parish will have its own vocation: a priest born and raised in Saint Martin of Tours. -Fr. Food box volunteers accomplish great things by volunteering one or two nights each month (it only takes an hour!

Sorting begins at 7:00 PM on the Monday preceding the Friday packing/distribution.

Second Harvest Food Bank provides 80% of the donations, with the rest supplied by parish donations.

The Food Box program also accepts monetary donations in honor/in memoriam, and will notify the honoree and/or family of the donation. The Food Box program always needs volunteers.

3 Sunday Ministry for Children & Youth Please contact the Catechetical Office for program information. FOOD BOX MINISTRY This rewarding ministry commits to providing groceries to anyone in the community who requests help, and St Martin s parishioners and friends make it all possible. Food box volunteers accomplish great things by volunteering one or two nights each month (it only takes an hour!) Volunteers are needed to sort the donations and pack food boxes, then deliver them to families in need. The Food Box packing/distribution begins at 6:15 PM on the 3 rd Friday of each month. Sorting begins at 7:00 PM on the Monday preceding the Friday packing/distribution. The ministry distributes to families each month, with some clients coming to pick-up, and some clients in need of home delivery. Second Harvest Food Bank provides 80% of the donations, with the rest supplied by parish donations. The program always accepts cash donations, and non-perishable food, including stew, canned meats and seafood, chili, dry-package dinners, etc. The Food Box program also accepts monetary donations in honor/in memoriam, and will notify the honoree and/or family of the donation. The Food Box program always needs volunteers. One of the most rewarding aspects of this ministry is that the entire family can be involved; adults, teenagers, and children of all ages can contribute to this meaningful work. We welcome you to drop-in (no prior commitment is necessary!) and participate at either the Monday Sorting, or Friday Packing and deliveries. This ministry is an excellent way to heed Christ's commandment and follow His example to help those in need, while at the same time get to know your fellow parishioners and neighbors. PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY The Prayer Shawl Ministry is comprised of a small group of gifted volunteers who identify themselves as spiritual crafters, who knit, crochet, and/or weave prayer shawls. The shawls are prayed over as they are created and when complete they are blessed by our parish priests. The intent is to bring God's love, compassion, and healing to those facing hard times, suffering with illness, facing surgery and/or convelescense, loss of a loved one, pregnancy, or any circumstance that these shawls would be of benefit. The ministry group meets on average of one day a month for a few hours to pray together, discuss issues, and share in creative plans. There are currently seven volunteers and more are welcome. There are several shawls presently available and seeking a good home. This is a gift from God and freely given to bring comfort to those who are in need. What do you say when you arrive at church and see a font prepared, a baby in the wings, the paschal candle burning? Well, maybe you will say that we re having a baptism today, or maybe you say we are having a christening. The proper term is baptism, since that is the name of the sacrament. But the persistent use of christening in our culture, probably from due to the influence of the Episcopal Church, is interesting. Baptism, an ancient word, is from the Greek meaning to dip or to dunk. Christening is an Old English word that describes perfectly well that more than getting splashed with water, the person being baptized is being Christed. No matter what you call it, there s always water involved, and then an anointing with chrism fragrant olive oil consecrated as a sign of Christ s presence poured upon the brow as we say, As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet, and King, so may you live always as a member of his body, sharing everlasting life. So, in being Christ-ed, you are conformed to his image, your life is expected to be a retelling of his life in miniature and you even though you may be squirming or sleeping are commissioned to be a priest, a prophet, a king. This means that you are called to be one who worships, you are called to speak the truth, you are called to shape the world and exercise right judgment. That is the deepest treasure of our tradition, and every time you gather to celebrate a baptism, you renew your vows precisely so that you can be more Christ-ed. No matter what vocabulary you assign to the liturgy, the key is transformation of the human person in the community of the Body of Christ. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
