2 Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday, November10, 2013 Pastor s Note HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY, ST. MARTIN November 9 - November 16 St. Martin Parish Community turns 100 in The kickoff dinner on the occasion of the feast of our patron, St. Martin on Saturday after 5.00 PM Mass marks the beginning of the yearlong Centennial celebration. We are celebrating 100 years of a vision that became a mission. We are celebrating 100 years of service of our participation as a community in the downward movement of God. This participation is succinctly expressed in our motto: People Ministering to People. And then, of course, we are celebration each of you. Your contribution and your being part of this community is what makes St. Martin what it is. It is an opportunity for us to investigate personalities, milestones, historical events, fascinating developments, evolutions and revolutions and interesting-yet-difficult changes. The goal of the investigation is to recognize the saving hand of God, His pedagogical guidance and to thank Him for shepherding us beyond our wants, our fears. That being said, it is not a time to be complacent. The Centennial celebration challenges us to grow toward God and others and not to hibernate in the frozen sleep of tradition and familiarity. As St. Paul says, we are called to grow until we attain to the full height of the stature of Christ. (Eph. 4:13) We shall not settle down for anything less that this. I can t find better words than those of the Swedish diplomat Dag Hammarskjold to say to the Lord: TO ALL THAT HAS BEEN, THANKS AND TO ALL THAT WILL BE, YES. Plan to join us for our Thanksgiving Day Mass on Thursday, November 28 th at 9:00 a.m. (There will only be one Mass on Thanksgiving.) This is always a wonderful celebration, because the entire community gathers together for this one special celebration. One thing that makes this Mass special is the collection of food for the hungry that the community brings forward and places near the altar. Please remember to bring your canned and dry food items with you to church on Thanksgiving. The collection on that day will go towards the work of the Pastoral Outreach Ministries. The generosity of our community is beautiful to behold and a blessing to all those in need.

4 Children s Sunday Masses Would your children like to participate in our monthly Children s Masses? Students are needed for the following ministries: greeters, ushers, lectors, bringing up the gifts, and reading petitions. Training will be provided. (If you ve never been to that Mass, the music is very lively and spirit-filled.) The Story of St. Martin of Tours On a bitterly cold day, the famous legend goes, Martin met a poor man, almost naked, trembling in the cold and begging from passersby at the city gate. Martin had nothing but his weapons and his clothes. He drew his sword, cut his cloak into two pieces, gave one piece to the beggar and wrapped himself in the other half. Some of the bystanders laughed at his now odd appearance; others were ashamed at not having relieved the man's misery themselves. That night in his sleep Martin saw Christ dressed in the half of the garment he had given away, and heard him say, "Martin, still a catechumen, has clothed me with this cloak." So it is told that St. Martin shared his own cloak with the needy man. We take the opportunity at the feast of St. Martin, our patron saint, to follow his example. Every year near our feast day, we ask for your help to the needy folks in our area before the cold of the winter months arrives. On November 9 and 10, you are invited to bring new or clean gently used coats, jackets, and sweatshirts to Saturday and Sunday masses. They will be sorted and taken to Sacred Heart CommunitCenter for distribution to those of our brothers and sisters most in need. And YOU will have upheld the tradition of St. Martin. Three weeks to our Fair Trade Faire. Several of the items we will be selling are small nativity sets. Some were made in Indonesia where Ningsih and husband employ 30 artisans to carve, sand and paint wooden sculptures. The wood is locally and sustainably sourced and wages help parents with basic food and household expenses. Your purchase allows these artisans to send them children to school and not to the streets in search of work. PRESCHOOL - Sunday Preschool will only be held during the 10 a.m. Mass this year. CHILDREN S LITURGY OF THE WORD is weekly for Kindergarteners through 6th grade. Children begin 8:30 and 10 a.m. Mass with their families then leave from the church for the Proclamation of God s Word at their level of understanding. Children return to the church for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Join us and check it out! CHILDREN'S CATECHETICAL MINISTRY (CCM) Is held Thursdays at 4:00 in the school classrooms Jr. HIGH is held in the Parish Office on Sundays at 9:30. 5 Who s Under My Carbon Footprint? We have shared that the poor and most vulnerable around the world suffer the most from the impacts of climate change. What is the connection between the amount of carbon we generate and climate change? Greenhouse gases, which CO2 is one, are necessary to keep the planet warm, but too much CO2 in the atmosphere contributes to global warming Þ creates the challenges of climate change. Carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gases and specifically carbon dioxide emitted by something (as a person's activities or a product's manufacture and transport) during a given period of time. Our carbon footprint is a powerful tool to understand the impact of our personal behavior on global warming. Once people calculate their footprint most are shocked by the amount of carbon they generate. Calculating your carbon footprint for your household and yourself personally is a great first step to reducing your footprint. There are several sources for carbon footprint calculator. Psalm 17:5-6a Food Box Program Holiday News The holidays are here, and with all of the excitement and anticipation, it is also important to remember our neighbors who are struggling to make ends meet. Participating in our Food Box Program is a simple and easy way to give back to the community, especially during the busy holiday season. If you would like to make a monetary donation or contribute gift cards, please be sure to include "Food Box" on the memo line of your check or envelope, and drop it off in the parish office. And bring your whole family (and friends!) to our monthly Food Box Packing, Nov 15 (every 3rd Friday of the month), at 6:30pm. We'll have you out by 7:30pmbut that one hour will make a difference in the lives of many. Reminder of Second Chance Collection. When you sign up to be photographed be sure if you have four or more persons in your group that you select two sessions! You will receive a complimentary 8x10 portrait and a copy of the directory. You will also have the opportunity to purchase additional portraits, wallet size to 30x40 in four professional finishes. You may also select from retouch services. Photos taken in November will be available for Christmas. Our directory won t be complete with out you! Pictures will be taken in the Community Building (A.K.A the Donut Room). If you would like to volunteer to check-in people for their photograph session please contact the parish office Help is needed: T-F 2:15 p.m.-9:10 p.m. Saturday 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Any amount of time you could give would be great! PASTORAL CARE MINISTRY NEWS We Need Your Help The Pastoral Care Ministry, working in conjunction with the parish priests, needs the help of the parish community. We know that there are a number of elderly parish members who are homebound and would like to receive the Eucharist and/or a visit from our parish priests. Pastoral Care has a group of volunteers who would be most happy to bring the Eucharist, a listening presence, a compassionate ear, kindness, and prayers to anyone wishing for them. Fr. Sergio and/or Fr. Abe are ready to visit the homebound and offer the sacraments to those in need. The problem is that we do not know who needs us. We rely on telephone calls from relatives, friends, or the elderly themselves to let us know they would like a visit. Please call Leslie Plecque at (408) and she will arrange for visits.
