5 A GREAT ARTICLE PRINTED IN THE POST-DISPATCH ON JULY 4TH: Please read the following article. It s something that we who call ourselves Americans need to keep in mind: WE MUST NOT LET OUR FOUNDING IDEALS BE FORGOTTEN: Declaration of Independence can only be properly read in a spirit of humility By Michael Gerson WASHINGTON -- At moments of institutional conflict and uncertainty, Americans naturally turn to the Constitution. But at times of anger, division and national self-doubt, the best American leaders have helped us turn to a different document: the Declaration of Independence. That few seem to be doing so now -- in our season of division and doubt -- is another sign that we lack real leaders. The Declaration is an odd source of national pride since it can only be properly read in a spirit of humility. It refers to a transcendent order of justice and human dignity that existed prior to the nation -- and that exposed the nation's horrifying hypocrisies. ("How is it," taunted Samuel Johnson, "that we hear the loudest yelps for liberty among the drivers of Negroes?") "We hold these truths" makes us vulnerable to the judgment of those truths. American independence, of course, involved more than humility. It was an act of defiance rooted in an armlong list of grievances. In Worcester, Massachusetts, after the Declaration was signed, patriots drank to the toast: "Perpetual itching without the benefit of scratching to the enemies of America." But, as Abraham Lincoln noted, the Declaration could have established national independence without its second paragraph about the human rights to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." "The assertion that 'all men are created equal,'" Lincoln argued, "was of no practical use in effecting our separation from Great Britain." As he saw it, the Founders, while constrained by the political realities of their time, set out a non-arbitrary, timeless truth "for future use." "They meant simply to declare the right," said Lincoln, "so that the enforcement of it might follow as fast as circumstances should permit. They meant to set up a standard maxim for free society, which should be familiar to all, and revered by all; constantly looked to, constantly labored for... even though never perfectly attained." Why is that maxim so important? At one level, Lincoln's answer was bluntly practical. If liberty is denied to anyone, it could eventually be denied to you. "And when you have stricken down the principles of the Declaration of Independence," he said, "and thereby consigned the Negro to hopeless and eternal bondage, are you quite sure that the demon will not turn and rend you? Will not the people then be ready to go down beneath the tread of any tyrant who may wish to rule them?" But Lincoln also saw the Declaration as the embodiment of a moral ideal. "It was not the mere matter of the separation of the colonies from the motherland; but something in that Declaration giving liberty, not alone to the people of this country, but hope to the world for all future time. It was that which gave promise that in due time the weights should be lifted from the shoulders of all men, and that all should have an equal chance." By definition, America can't be a normal nation. It stands for more than getting and keeping. Its greatness is a greatness of spirit. And its failures -- such as slavery, segregation and the shameful treatment of Native Americans -- are not only legal but spiritual failures. They are blasphemy against our country's creed. Does anyone think or talk like this now? They need to. There is so much dehumanization in our politics, and the main role of the Declaration is humanization. Its ideals are desperately needed and roundly ignored. How do we measure our loss? It might be a useful exercise to take political arguments and apply the Declaration as a kind of suffix. So: We should fear Latino migrants as gang members and murderers... and all men and women are created equal. Or: Muslims are a threat and should be kept out of the country... and all men and women are created equal. Or: Spending on AIDS treatments for foreigners is a waste... and all men and women are created equal. Or: The human cost of a failing health or education system doesn't matter... and all men and women are created equal. Or: Human beings can be dismembered up to the moment before birth... and all men and women are created equal. When our founding ideals are forgotten, it is the vulnerable and powerless who suffer first and worst. Lincoln accused politicians who dismiss or downplay the Declaration of "blowing out the moral lights around us." When someone calls us back to that faded document, and begins to rekindle America's conscience, it will be a sign we have found a real leader again. (c) 2017, Washington Post Writers Group ADDITIONAL WORDS THAT THOSE WHO CALL THEMSELVES CHRISTIANS AND CATHOLICS NEED TO KEEP IN MIND: The following comes from Pope St. Clement, the successor of our St. Cletus. He is noted for his letter to the people of Corinth about the year 90 AD. As you can see, despite St. Paul s letter to them some forty years before (see 1 Cor. 11:17-12:31), they were still having problems which St. Clement tried to address: Why are there strife and passion, schisms and even war among you? Do we not possess the same Spirit of grace which was given to us and the same calling in Christ? Why do we tear apart and divide the body of Christ? Why do we revolt against our own body? Why do we reach such a degree of insanity that we forget that we are members one of another? Your division has led many astray, has made many doubt, has made many despair, and has brought grief upon us all. And still your rebellion continues. We should put an end to this division immediately. Let us fall down before our master and implore his mercy with our tears. Then he will be reconciled to us and restore us to the practice of brotherly love that befits us. The greater he seems to be, the more humbly he ought to act, and the more zealous he should be for the common good rather than his own interest.

6 PROTECTING GOD S CHILDREN WORKSHOP ALL Volunteers and Employees for St. Cletus School and any children's programs that hold meetings at St. Cletus Church must attend a Protecting God s Children Workshop. There is one scheduled here at St. Cletus on Thursday, Aug. 17 in the Parish Hall at 6:30 pm. Plan to attend if you would like to participate in ANY school activities or Parish programs for children. Please call Mary Peters at or mpeters@saintcletus.org In the Gospel, we find that the demands of daily Christian living is to spend our life primarily searching for the kingdom of God. Each month our Society is able to help six or seven households for the first time. We are able also to continue our service to other families we may have helped in the past. 7 THIS WEEKEND JULY 30, 7:00 PM! On Sunday, July 30, we here at St. Cletus will have honor of hearing Father Thomas Michel, SJ, who will speak to us about his multi-year experience of living in an Islamic culture and working with people of that faith. He will speak in our parish Church that evening at 7:00 PM. It should be a most interesting and beneficial presentation in light of current events and the questions that those current events have aroused in us all. Fr. Thomas Michel, S.J., was born in St. Louis, U.S.A., in 1941, was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of St. Louis in 1967, and joined the Jesuits in Yogyakarta, Indonesia in After studying Arabic and Islamic studies in Egypt and Lebanon, he received a doctorate in Islamic theology at the University of Chicago. His doctoral thesis was entitled Ibn Taymiyya's Al-Jawab al-sahih: A Muslim Theologian's Critique of Christianity. In 1978, after teaching at Columbia University in New York, he taught Islamic studies at Sanata Dharma University in Indonesia, as well as Christian theology at Islamic theological institutes. In , Fr. Michel worked in the Vatican under Pope John Paul II as Head of the Office for Relations with Muslims. During this time he spent four years teaching Christian theology in universities in Turkey and at the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies and the Gregorian University in Rome. In , Fr. Michel served as Secretary for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs for the Catholic bishops of Asia (FABC), based in Bangkok, Thailand, and as Secretary for Interreligious Dialogue, at the Jesuit Curia in Rome. In 2000 he delivered the D Arcy Lectures at Oxford University on themes of Muslim-Christian relations. In , he lived in Turkey and taught Christian theology at Turkish state universities. In 2008, he received the International Tschelebi Peace Prize from the Central Islamic Institute of Germany, and in 2009 he received the Ali Shir Navai Award from the International Turkish Olympiad in Ankara, Turkey. In 2010, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Theology by the Catholic Theological Union of Chicago, Illinois. In 2013, he received the Building Bridges of Understanding Award from Alwaleed Center for Muslim- Christian Understanding of Georgetown University. In 2011 he held the Tuohy Chair at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio. In 2012 he held the Wade Chair at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. From he has served in Georgetown University as Senior Fellow of the Woodstock Theological Center and Senior Fellow of the Alwaleed Center for Muslim- Christian Understanding. Fr. Michel is on the International Advisory Board of the Khalidi Library, Jerusalem and the Editorial Board of the journal Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations in Birmingham, UK; He is on the International Advisory Panel of the International Movement for a Just World in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and on the Advisory Board of the Centre for Civilisational Dialogue at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. From , he taught religious studies at the School of Foreign Service of Georgetown University in Doha, Qatar. In he is teaching Islamic studies at the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies in Rome, Italy. In March 2017, he celebrated his 50th Anniversary of ordination, and in August, 2017, he will join the staff of the new Xavier College to open in Chiang Rai, Thailand. Especially when people today have so many questions about Islam, we here at St. Cletus are most honored to have Fr. Michel join us on Sunday evening, July 30, at 7:00 PM in our parish Church.
