5 BE KIND, BE KIND, BE KIND : I am writing this note on November 13. I woke up this morning with KMOX broadcasting that Hamas in Gaza had shot over 460 missiles and mortars into Israel and that Israel had responded with its air force bombing over 100 sites in Gaza. In that same morning s news broadcast, I heard it reported that November 13 is World Kindness Day. Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York City is a proud native of St. Louis, Ballwin s Holy Infant Parish to be specific. In 1999, while he was the rector of the North American College (the residence for American seminarians) in Rome, then Msgr. Dolan wrote a book entitled Priests for the Third Millennium. In it, he writes that there are three things that every priest must be, Be kind, be kind, be kind. Hearing that this day is World Kindness Day and remembering then-msgr. Dolan s words about what every priest must be, I was curious so I pulled out my 1961-copyrighted-Merriam-Webster-Dictionary-that-I-bought-as-a-freshman-in-high-school and looked up the derivation of the word kindness. I found out that our English word comes from the Anglo-Saxon word cynde which meant natural and innate. My dictionary then defined the word kind as having feelings befitting our common nature, benevolent, well-disposed, showing tenderness, gracious, loving, affectionate, gentle. What I thought was interesting is the tying of the Anglo-Saxon meaning of natural and innate to the these definitions to our current definition of kind. If one does so, then being kind is meant to be as natural and as innate as anything else we do that is natural and innate. Thinking about what is natural and innate to us, it is things such as breathing, seeing, walking, hearing, speaking, thinking, eating, sleeping, and so on. Imagine what a world we would have if being kind was as central and as natural to us as all of these other innate activities. As the song Over the Rainbow from the Wizard of Oz states, What a wonderful world it would be! Please keep all of this in mind the next time you are tempted to shoot missiles and mortars at or bomb another person. PLEASE BE SURE TO READ the article by Bishop Murry on the last page of this bulletin. Archbishop Carlson asked the priests at our recent Convocation to speak with you all about the sin of racism in our country. The US bishops themselves discussed it at their recent meeting in Washington DC. Doesn t combatting racism all boil down to us being kind to one another as I described above? Below is an additional and similar thought. THE OTHER SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD: On this Thanksgiving weekend, may we take time to be grateful not just now but throughout the year, everyday of the year, May this reflection help us to do so: Junior high school students in Chicago were studying the Seven Wonders of the World. At the end of the lesson, the students were asked to list what they considered to be the Seven Wonders of the World. Though there was some disagreement, the following received the most votes: 1. Egypt's Great Pyramids 2. The Taj Mahal in India 3. The Grand Canyon in Arizona 4. The Panama Canal 5. The Empire State Building 6. St. Peter's Basilica 7. China's Great Wall While gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one student, a quiet girl, hadn't turned in her paper yet. So she asked the girl if she was having trouble with her list. The quiet girl replied, "Yes, a little. I couldn't quite make up my mind because there were so many." The teacher said, "Well, tell us what you have, and maybe we can help." The girl hesitated, then read, "I think the Seven Wonders of the World are: 1. to touch to taste to see to hear to feel to laugh and to love. The room was so quiet; you could have heard a pin drop. May this story serve as a gentle reminder to all of us that the things we overlook as simple and ordinary are often the most wonderful - and we don't have to travel anywhere special to experience them. A QUESTION ABOUT SIGNING FOR THE DEAF AT OUR MASSES: Our parishioner Leann Hogan signs for the deaf and is interested in knowing if any parishioners have any deaf friends or family members who would attend Mass if an interpreter were present. If so, please contact me, and I will let Leann know. Thanks! AN EARLY CHRISTMAS PRESENT IDEA: Elsewhere in this bulletin is an advertisement from the Augustine Institute introducing us to its CD of the Month Club which would include an MP3 of the Month Club too. What a great idea for a Christmas gift for one s loved ones! As you can probably tell from listening to my homilies, I just love listening to CDs as I drive my car. What good and easy faith input/gift for one s family members!

8 CARE FOR CREATION TALKIN TRASH What can be recycled? It can be confusing, but we all can be conscientious recyclers with a little knowledge, helping to foster a sustainable Blue planet. 1. Know what to throw: recycle hard plastics, metal and steel, glass, paper and cardboard 2. Empty, clean and dry: remember to keep recyclables free of food and moisture. 3. Keep it loose: never put recyclables in a plastic bag or container. Contamination occurs when recyclables are soiled by food or drink or when non-recyclable items, from diapers to batteries, are put in a recycling container. Contamination can ruin an entire load of otherwise valuable recyclables. Items to recycle... Newspaper, inserts and junk mail, magazines, catalogs, and envelopes, paper back books, and phone books, Cardboard and clean pizza boxes Office and school papers ( colored paper too) Boxboard (cereal, cake, and cracker boxes) Brown paper bags Aluminum cans and clean foil Tin and steel aerosol cans (empty) Empty glass jars and bottles Plastic milk, water, and juice jugs Cartons, milk, juice, broth, etc. Yogurt and butter tubs, ketchup bottles Detergent and cleaning containers Next week. What not to put in the recycling container.
