5 DYNAMIC CATHOLIC, ALIVE! WHAT IS ADVENT? While our society often equates Advent with the Christmas shopping season, it is, of course, much more! In the season of Advent, which begins the fourth Sunday before Christmas, we relive the long period of expectancy between the promise of a Messiah and the Incarnation of Christ. Christmas is not an event within history but is rather the invasion of time by eternity (Hans Urs von Balthasar). How are you preparing for the coming of the Lord? For more, go to MORE ABOUT THE SEASON OF ADVENT: While a bit more complicated with its names for the various weekly candle and its reference to a fifth candle on the wreath than most of us would be familiar with, the following description from the website offers lot of food for thought: Set on the branches of the wreath are four candles: three purple candles and one pink candle. In the center of the wreath sits a white candle. As a whole, these candles represent the coming of the light of Christ into the world. On the first Sunday of Advent, the first purple candle is lit. This candle is typically called the "Prophecy Candle" in remembrance of the prophets, primarily Isaiah, who foretold the birth of Christ. This candle represents hope or expectation in anticipation of the coming Messiah. Each week on Sunday, an additional candle is lit. On the second Sunday of Advent, the second purple candle is lit. This candle typically represents love. Some traditions call this the "Bethlehem Candle," symbolizing Christ's manger. On the third Sunday of Advent the pink or rose-colored candle is lit. This pink candle is customarily called the "Shepherds Candle" and it represents joy. The fourth and last purple candle, oftentimes called the "Angels Candle," represents peace and is lit on the fourth Sunday of Advent. On Christmas Eve, the white center candle is traditionally lit. This candle is called the "Christ Candle" and represents the life of Christ that has come into the world. The color white represents purity. Christ is the sinless, spotless, pure Savior. Also, those who receive Christ as Savior are washed of their sins and made whiter than snow. Celebrating with an Advent wreath during the weeks prior to Christmas is a great way for Christian families to keep Christ at the center of Christmas, and for parents to teach their children the true meaning of Christmas. OUR PARISH S FALL FESTIVAL ON NOVEMBER 15: What a great day and great celebration we had for our Fall Festival two weeks ago! While this note comes a bit late, I still wanted to thank those who played such vital roles in making that day so great. Many thanks to the committee who planned and oversaw that day. When it comes to events running smoothly as did our Fall Festival, we often forget that there is lots and lots of planning that goes into making such events run smoothly. Many, many thanks to all those who played such vital roles in insuring that all went so well. Thanks to all those who set up and oversaw the games (wasn t bubble soccer so much fun, especially when the moms got out there to play?). Many, many thanks to all those who contributed items for our raffle to all those contributed items for the snack walk I ve never seen so many sweet treats assembled outside of a grocery store! Many, many thanks to the members of our Men s Club, to the St. Charles Knights of Columbus, and to the members of the Duchesne High School Key Club who set up before the festival began, who dished out the food and drink, and who later cleaned up after it concluded. Thanks as well to all of you who attended and who celebrated our parish s fifty years so festively. THUS CONCLUDES OUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY OBSERVANCE. I think that we all can be proud of all that we did as a parish to celebrate our past fifty years and to look forward to our next fifty years. Think of some of those event by which we marked this milestone in our parish s life: January s Kick -Off event, March s Parish Mission, the new pictorial directory, Msgr. Hickel s 60th ordination anniversary in March, the picnic weekend s fun run and walk in May, June s Good Dad project, September s Mass with the Archbishop and the dinner following, November 15th s Young Catholic Musicians leading our singing at our 10:00 Mass with the Fall Festival following, plus welcoming back those priests and deacons who, over the years, have served here. Again, many, many thanks to all who helped in any way! PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS for next Tuesday s Holy Day of Obligation, the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Masses at 6:30 PM on Dec. 7 and 6:00 and 9:00 AM on Dec. 8) as well as our Advent Penance Service on Tuesday, Dec. 15, at 7:00 PM with 6 priests present. Grant, Lord that the Beyond Sunday campaign will, through support of Catholic education and the parishes of our Archdiocese, bring us, our people, to new depths of knowledge and love for You. May this campaign be a source of new strength to those in need, of healing in our civic community, of vitality in families, of development for parishes and neighborhoods.

9 (A reflection of the Scripture readings from the December issue of Celebration. We hope you find it helpful as you prepare for Mass each Sunday this month.) Preparing a Welcome Lectionary themes for December 2015 PATRICIA DATCHUCK SÁNCHEZ and RAFAEL SÁNCHEZ ALONSO Advent, during which we anticipate the feast of Christmas, is a time of remembering, celebrating and preparing for Christ s coming among us in time and space, in flesh and blood, in light and in darkness, in power and in profound humility. Christ s coming is more than an historic moment of the past. It is a recurring phenomenon here, now and always. Therefore Advent is not merely a commemorative moment or an anniversary but an annual opportunity for each of us to consider the future and final Advent, the promised coming of God s reign on earth. Dietrich Bonhoeffer would have us be mindful that, unlike the gaiety and excitement that characterizes contemporary Advent ambience, early Christianity thought of the second coming or return of the Lord Jesus as a day of great judgment to be welcomed with extreme seriousness ( The Coming of Jesus in Our Midst, The Testament to Freedom, HarperCollins, San Francisco: 1995). When Jesus appears (Rev 3:20), said Bonhoeffer, our conscience should, first of all, prick us. Are we rightly prepared? Is our heart capable of becoming God s dwelling place? Perhaps we have become so accustomed to the good news of God s love that we no longer sense the shiver of fear that God s coming should arouse in us. We are selective in the messages with which we choose to relate, filtering out and embracing the pleasant while relegating the challenging and ominous to some future, unspecified moment. Nevertheless, the coming of God is not only good news but, first of all, sober and ever fearsome news for everyone who has a conscience. And so, as persons blessed by Christ is the inconvenient stranger who makes demands. Will you welcome him or pass him by? God with consciences and as believers whose consciences have been cultivated by the truth, justice, integrity and goodness preached and lived by Jesus, we approach the Advent mystery with a spirit that is both fascinans and tremendum, i.e., fascinated by the awesome goodness of God and trembling at our own unworthiness to be in God s presence. This sense of the numinous, first explored by Rudolf Otto (Idea of the Holy, 1936), attests to the awareness on the part of truthful human beings as to who they are before God. But rather than remain in an ambivalent state, tantalized by the desire to be with God but tremulous as to the ramifications of such a desire, Bonhoeffer bids us find the courage to put one foot in front of the other and make our way to the God whose coming beckons us beyond ourselves. Having known the terror of the experience, and in full recognition of the incomparable kindness of God, we are ready for the Kierkegaardian leap of faith that moves us irretrievably forward. Something of the courage required for this great leap is reflected in the questions of those who approached the Baptizer in the Gospel of Dec. 13. Three times, John was approached with the question, What ought we to do? Three times, those who were already following an agenda of their own devising presented themselves with a willingness to forego that agenda in favor of another one suggested by John. This new agenda would necessitate a thorough change of heart, mind and lifestyle so as to be prepared, in faith, to welcome the Lord Jesus through the preparatory baptism of John. This leap of faith into the future meant that they would allow God to ready them for the baptism Jesus would bring, a baptism with the Holy Spirit and fire. The crowds who came to John may have exercised their former agendas without much care for the needy. Now they were asked to share what they had to ease the burdens of the poor. Formerly, the soldiers falsely accused the innocent and exacted blackmail when it suited their purposes. John challenged them to a life of honesty and authentic protection of the people. Tax collectors, too, were challenged to abide by the law and exact no commissions for themselves. To what great leap of faith or transformation of agenda does the coming Christ summon each of us this Advent? As we prepare in both fear and fascination to welcome the ever Coming One, how might John answer our question, What ought we to do? Bonhoeffer (op. cit.) suggests that those who ask the question in all sincerity are thereby opening themselves to the shocking reality that Jesus is asking us for help, for kindness, in the form of the beggar in the street. He confronts us in each person we meet. He walks the earth with sorrow and sufferings that beg to be attended. He is the inconvenient stranger who makes demands. Will you welcome him or pass him by? These are the questions that frame our Advent hope and expectation. How will you answer? How will I? What ought we to do?
