Giving money to support the mission of our local parish is a matter of our faith, just like praying and participating in parish ministries. To adore is to share the life of Mary on earth when she adored the Word Incarnate in her virginal womb, when she adored Him in the Crib, on Calvary, in the divine Eucharist. On Sunday, November 11, our St. Cletus Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul is again sponsoring the annual St. Cletus Quilt Social. The doors will open at 12:30 p.m. so you can enjoy a light lunch and dessert. The Social will begin at 1:30p.m... We also need desserts for the social which can be dropped off at the school cafeteria on Sunday morning, the day of the event. If you haven t purchased your raffle tickets they will be on sale in the gathering place after Masses. You may also view some of the beautiful quilts. Thank you! In today s Gospel Jesus tells us: I want you to observe that this poor widow contributed more than all the others who donated to the treasury. They gave from their surplus wealth, but she gave from her want, all that she had to live on. Ask yourself Am I only giving from my surplus wealth? You can put your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul poor box (located at the rear of the church in the main aisle) so that those who are suffering will be able to know God s love and care.

5 ENDOWMENT SUNDAY: Those of you have been parishioners here at St. Cletus since before 2005 may remember that, as a way for us to celebrate our parish s 40 th anniversary, we undertook a capital campaign to honor the past and bless the future, the motto on our parish s seal. It was a capital campaign intended to raise $1.7 million, $600,000 to retire the parish s debt and especially $1,000,000 to establish an endowment to promote our parish s mission and ministries with the rest going to campaign costs. The endowment was specifically intended to generate funds to promote why St. Cletus exists in the first place, in other words, for the extra programs and items that couldn t be funded through the parish s regular budget but yet were very necessary in order to make our parish better. The proceeds of the endowment were specifically NOT intended for brick and mortar projects. The end result of the campaign was that it was a tremendous success in that we achieved the $1.7 million goal. In order to keep the endowment before our eyes, lest we forget what our parish achieved then, the 40 th anniversary committee decided to do three things. 1) We created the Book of Remembrance you will find near the relic of St. Cletus near the main doors of the Church. 2) We planted a tree with a plaque at its base near the stairs along the Church s East staircase. 3) We decided to give an account of the previous year s activity by an annual report on what we would call Endowment Sunday near Thanksgiving Day. I must admit that those annual reports have not been issued for the past couple of years (after all, as I like to say, the gray matter is graying ). However, earlier this year, the members of our St. Cletus Endowment Committee remembered to set today, November 11, as this year s Endowment Sunday. As of the beginning of our fiscal year, the base of the endowment is $1,324,343 with undisturbed earnings at $317,704 for a total value of $1,642,047. From its proceeds, the members of our St. Cletus Endowment Committee chose to use $69,184 to fund 20 program requests among them tuition assistance for needy school families; to help fund our LifeTeen program, the training of our Stephen Ministry leaders and ministers, and our Vacation Bible School; as well as the purchase of the books or CDs we distribute at Christmas and Easter. We can be rightly proud of what our parish has been able to do through our parish endowment! Your donations through the green envelopes continue to build it. Please consider building our endowment by asking for memorial donations to it at the death of loved ones as continue to honor the past and bless the future. THE WAR TO END ALL WARS: Today, November 11, 2018, is the 100th anniversary of the armistice in effect ending what-we-now-call World War 1. It is interesting to go back and review the causes of that war that resulted in about 40 million military and civilian casualties (20 million deaths and 21 million wounded). Mutual Defense Alliances: Countries throughout Europe made mutual defense agreements that would pull them into battle. These treaties meant that if one country was attacked, allied countries were bound to defend them. Imperialism: The increasing competition and desire for greater empires led to an increase in confrontation that helped push the world into World War I. Militarism: The military establishment began to have a greater influence on public policy. This increase in militarism helped push the countries involved into war. Nationalism: Nationalism in various countries throughout Europe contributed not only to the beginning but the extension of the war in Europe. Each country tried to prove its dominance and power. The lighting of this combined powder keg: the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand on June 26, 1914 (for more, go to: The Versailles Treaty: What is really most dissatisfying is that formal treaty ending that war was so harsh on Germany that it only sowed the seeds of resentment and anger resulting in what we now call World War 2. What is so sad is that we humans fail to learn the lessons that our past wars can teach us. VETERANS DAY: While this date of November 11 is now known as Veterans Day and while we rightfully honor those who have served and defended our country, we need to learn the lessons of the following prayer even more: Lord, make me an instrument of your peace, Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy; O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek To be consoled as to console; To be understood as to understand; To be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. A PRAYER FOR VETERANS DAY: God of peace, we pray for those who have served our nation and have laid down their lives to protect and defend our freedom. We pray for those who have fought, whose spirits and bodies are scarred by war, whose nights are haunted by memories too painful for the light of day. We pray for those who serve us now, especially for those in harm's way. Shield them from danger and bring them home. Turn the hearts and minds of our leaders and our enemies to the work of justice and a harvest of peace. Spare the poor, Lord, spare the poor! May the peace you left us, the peace you gave us, be the peace that sustains, the peace that saves us. Christ Jesus, hear us! Lord Jesus, hear our prayer! Amen.

The tree will be loaded with ornaments for the Thanksgiving Day mass and every day thereafter until Dec. 16. We will have ornaments for Birthright, St. Cletus and Our Lady of Guadalupe.
