3 "A MYSTERY MASKED AS MISTAKE": On this Sunday which celebrates the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, I am sharing with you one of my favorite pieces of humorous yet meaning-filled writing. Composed by John Shea, it is simply called "The Prayer of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass": Those who do not believe in a higher harmony will balk when told an accident crunched in the parking lot at the very moment when the altar boy's nose began to bleed. He bled on the cassock, the surplice, the candle, the other altar boys, and the priest's unlaced shoe which huggingly carried an acebandaged ankle. The priest was stuffing a purificator up the altar boy's nose, damming the blood into his eyeballs, when the lector asked "how do you pronounce E-L-I-S-H-A," and the organist pounded the entrance "Praise to the Lord." They processed the bleeding, the halt, and the mute unto the altar of God. Now Saturday was late and liquored and delivered God's people sun-glassed and slumping to the epilogue of weekend life, the Gothic Church. They were not the community of liberal theology nor the scrubbed inhabitants of filmstrips. They were one endless face, and that face was asleep. "May the grace of our Lord...," a hungry pause for repentance, a quick feast of sins. The lector murdered the prophets once again and bypassed the section where a certain E-L-I-S-H-A was having a prophetic truck with a widow. The homily parleyed a fairly clear Gospel, "you're either with me or against me," into sentences of vacillation and paragraphs of doublethink. The priest ran to the Creed for refuge only to find that a special Creed was prepared for this morning's liturgy by Mrs. Zardak: "I believe in butterflies..." The courage of the President of the liturgical assembly drained out the bolt holes of Communion rail days. The Offertory gifts never made it; they were dropped by an elderly couple ("we never liked the new Mass anyway"). They had collided with a small but speedy child whose high-heeled mother was in clicky-clack pursuit and whose name was "Roger Comeback!" The Consecration was consistent. The priest lifted the host and said, "This is my blood." Instantly aware of his Eucharistic goof but also momentarily in the grip of a bizarre logic, he changed the wine into Jesus' body. Then with his whole mind, heart, and soul, he genuflected to a mystery, which masks itself as mistake, and a power, which perfects itself in weakness. I like this piece of writing because it is a great litany of all that can go wrong at a Celebration of the Eucharist, but it also highlights something that we always must keep in mind when any of these (and an infinite spectrum of other such goofs or irritations can happen at Mass, that is, what we are celebrating is a mystery, which masks itself as mistake, and a power, which perfects itself in weakness. TWO INSERTED PAGES IN TODAY S BULLETIN: First, the results of the Parish Survey from last year: The members of our Parish Council first began to solicit your input for this survey way back on August 19, As the members were well aware, we knew that this would be a monumental task not only to seek your thoughts and comments but, even more so, to tabulate your responses, to interpret them, to then take action on the items of importance, and then finally to report back to you on the survey s contents and action steps. I hope that you find this report to be very readable and to be very easily understood. Some action items have already been undertaken (that is, working on our sound system, changing the introductions and the way the announcements are done at our Sunday Masses, new carpet to be installed soon in our Weekday Day Chapel). Other points are still being considered and pursued, while others could be described as only in a perfect world, for example, there will always be crying babies; some folks are too hot in Church, some too cold; the second collections, though many, are largely mandated by the USCCB or by the Archdiocese and not ours to decide; and the desire for having large print missalettes in all pews is a good idea but is counterbalanced by those who have arthritic wrists. Again I thank the 432 of you who took the time to complete and return your surveys. The bottom line about this survey, as I see it, is that it is a call to us to be patient with each other and to remember what is most important about our Masses and our Parish is that we are a mystery, which masks itself as mistake, and a power, which perfects itself in weakness. Second, the Going to Mass: A Practical Guide : This guide was written by Father Nick Winker who is one of the Associate Pastors at Immaculate Conception Parish in Dardenne, and it is one of the practical results coming from the survey. There was a call for an increased appreciation of what we are doing and how we are to celebrate Masses on Sunday It offers a lot of food for thought, and I hope that you will take it to heart and share it with others. PLEASE NOTE the announcement in today s bulletin entitled FREE PERSONAL FINANCE SEMINARS AVAIL- ABLE. Please pardon the pun, but this is a "golden" opportunity to receive some very important information at a very affordable price---free! Please also pass along this information to folks that you know who could benefit from it. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION The Blessed Virgin speaking to St. Catherine Laboure - "Come to the foot of the altar. Graces will be shed on all, great and little, especially upon those who seek for them." "Whenever I go to the chapel, I put myself in the presence of our good Lord, and I say to him, Lord, I am here. Tell me what you would have me to do... And then, I tell God everything that is in my heart. I tell him about my pains and my joys, and then I listen. If you listen, God will also speak to you, for with the good Lord, you have to both speak and listen. God always speaks to you when you approach him plainly and simply." If interested in volunteering please contact Scott Barton at New Stem Cell Research Technique: A Medical "Breakthrough"? On May 15th the scientific community heralded an alleged "breakthrough" in stem cell research technology. According to the journal Cell, scientists transferred the DNA of a human skin cell into a human egg, thereby producing an embryo. While this may seem a promising procedure, it nevertheless violates the Catholic Church's teaching on the sanctity of human life.the USCCB released a statement from the Cardinal Sean O'Malley, USCCB Pro-Life Chair: "Creating new human lives in the laboratory solely to destroy them is an abuse denounced even by many who do not share the Catholic Church's convictions on human life," said Cardinal Seán O'Malley, OFM Cap., of Boston. He said this way of making embryos will also be taken up by people who want to produce cloned children as "copies" of other people."whether used for one purpose or the other, human cloning treats human beings as products, manufactured to order to suit other people's wishes." He added, "A technical advance in human cloning is not progress for humanity but its opposite."
