But they were startled and frightened LUKE 24:36-37 Throughout the day we have many opportunities to see the face of Jesus in others and to be the face of Jesus to others. 5 THANK YOU, MARY OLMSTED! Mrs. Mary Olmsted, our parishioner who has served as our parish s Coordinator of Religious Education for the past 9 years, has informed me and the other members of our Pastoral Team, that she intends to retire at the end of this current academic year. Mary and her husband, Deacon Frank Olmsted, have been parishioners of St. Cletus since 1984, and she has served the people of our parish in three different stints as a teacher and Coordinator of Religious Education for a total of 21 years under three different pastors, Fr. John Kerber, Fr. Jim Callahan, and myself. I m sure that you would agree with me in saying that she has served us with great dedication and distinction. Mary, we are most grateful for your service to the people of St. Cletus! Her husband, Deacon Frank, is also retiring at the end of DeSmet Jesuit High School s current term where he teaches religion. (Deacon Frank will continue to serve our parish as a permanent deacon.) Being so young in spirit and far from being ready for a nursing home, I am sure they both will continue to use their talents and new-found available time to serve God s people in new and varied ways. Thanks again, Mary, for sharing your life and your spirit with us! If you are possibly interested in serving as Mary s successor as our Coordinator of Religious Education, please note that our parish CRE s ministry is a 70% of full-time position that is responsible for coordinating the Parish School of Religion and sacrament coordination with both our full-time and part-time schools. Candidates should have CRE certification from the Archdiocesan Catholic Education Formation Office, have taught in Catholic schools or PSRs, and have some administrative experience. If you are interested in applying for this position, please send your cover letter and resume with references to me here at the Parish Office. OUR NEXT LIGHTHOUSE/AUGUSTINE INSTITUTE CD: RELIGIONLESS SPIRITUALITY: WHY WE NEED THE CHURCH BY DR. TIM GRAY The dust jacket for this CD contains this description: Renowned Scripture scholar and author, Dr. Tim Gray, provides a fascinating explanation of the importance of the visible Church and the centrality of Christ s mission to establish the Kingdom of God on Earth. He offers incredible insights that make clear the role of the Church as an essential part of God s plan for salvation, which are sure to help those who have left her or who mistakenly claim to be spiritual, but not religious. A $3.00 per CD would be appreciated, and, as always, you will find these CDs in the Lighthouse kiosk in the Church s Gathering Space. YOUR OWN EAR BUDS FOR OUR HEARING ASSIST UNITS: In our Sacristy where the priests, deacons, and servers vest and prepare for Mass, we have six hearing assist units for your use to help you hear better at Mass. If you d like to try one, simply see one of our ushers or greeters and ask them to show you where they are in that Sacristy. In order to cut down on possible contagion, we have also ordered fifty ear buds so you don t have to worry about picking up any bugs from someone else s ear. Feel free to take you own ear bud and use it with one of our hearing assist units. They are free of charge! AN EASTER THOUGHT FROM A HOMILY BY ST. JOHN CHRYSOTOM (c. 349 September 14, 407) Prayer and converse with God is a supreme good: it is a partnership and union with God. As the eyes of the body are enlightened when they see light, so our spirit, when it is intent on God, is illumined by his infinite light. I do not mean the prayer of outward observance but prayer from the heart, not confined to fixed times or periods, but continuous throughout the day and night. Our spirit should be quick to reach out toward God not only when it is engaged in meditation; at other times also, when it is carrying out its duties, caring for the needy, performing works of charity, giving generously in the service of others, our spirit should long for God, and call him to mind, so that these works may be seasoned with the salt of God s love, and so make a palatable offering to the Lord of the universe. Throughout the whole of our lives we may enjoy the benefit that comes from prayer if we devote a great deal of time to it. Prayer is the light of the spirit, true knowledge of God, mediating between God and man. The spirit, raised up to heaven by prayer, clings to God with the utmost tenderness; like a child crying tearfully for its mother, it craves the milk that God provides. It seeks the satisfaction of its own desires, and receives gifts outweighing the whole world of nature. Prayer stands before God as an honored ambassador. It gives joy to the spirit, peace to the heart. I speak of prayer, not words. It is the longing for God, love too deep for words, a gift not given by man but by God s grace. The apostle Paul says: We do not know how we are to pray but the Spirit himself pleads for us with inexpressible longings. When the Lord gives this kind of prayer to someone; he gives him riches that cannot be taken away, heavenly food that satisfies the spirit. One who tastes this food is set on fire with an eternal longing for the Lord: his spirit burns as in a fire of the utmost intensity. Practice prayer from the beginning. Paint your house with the colors of modesty and humility. Make it radiant with the light of justice. Decorate it with the finest gold leaf of good deeds. Adorn it with the walls and stones of faith and generosity. Crown it with the pinnacle of prayer. In this way you will make it a perfect dwelling place for the Lord. You will be able to receive him as in a splendid palace, and through his grace you will already possess him, his image enthroned in the temple of your spirit.

6 Consider returning thanks to God for one hour a week to adore before The Lord. In doing this, you would commit to the same day/hour each week. Please consider making a commitment for one hour a week as part of your prayer discipline. God gives and we receive and listen through our devotion before Him. You can sign up for any hour. The Chapel is open 24 hours a day Monday 7:30am Saturday 7:30am. The hours that we do need help are: Tuesday 2am Wednesday 4am Thursday 1am Friday 2am Please give us a call if you would like to become an adorer Thank you! This eventually led to national legislation such as the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. How do you and your family show your appreciation of Mother Earth, Our Common Home?
