3 JANUARY 22, 1973 A VERY SAD ANNIVERSARY: This Tuesday marks the 40th anniversary of one of the darkest days in American history, the U.S. Supreme Court s Roe vs. Wade decision allowing abortion on demand in our country. Please remember the following words from Pope Benedict on that day: God's love does not differentiate between the newly conceived infant still in his or her mother's womb and the child or young person, or the adult and the elderly person. God does not distinguish between them because he sees an impression of his own image and likeness (Gn 1:26) in each one. [L]ife is the first good received from God and is fundamental to all others; to guarantee the right to life for all and in an equal manner for all is the duty upon which the future of humanity depends. PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Though we have just now concluded our celebration of the Christmas Season, Lent is less than a month from now. Please note that our parish has planned a great LENTEN SPEAKER SE- RIES. We hope that you will be able to join us for this series of speakers on these important topics: February 17: Fr. Mike Esswein on Trusting God in Suffering and Adversity March 3: Fr. Jeff Vomund on Developing a Personal Relationship with Christ during Our Lenten Journey March 10: Brad Soderberg on Walking with God on Our Life s Journey March 17: Bishop Robert Hermann on Reconciliation with God When a Relationship Is Broken All of these talks will occur on these Sunday evenings at 7:00 PM in our Church. PLEASE TOO MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR FEBRUARY 22 AND 23, when we will celebrate another RECON- CILIATION WEEKEND in our Archdiocese. Our area Church for this sacrament is again St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. FYI A TRIP TO IRELAND: My friend Father Dennis Port and I are planning to lead a ten day trip to Ireland with Golden Frontier from Sept. 23 to Oct. 2, 2013, visiting places like Galway, Knock, Killarney, Kerry, Blarney Castle, and the Cliffs of Moher among other places. The cost: $2,788. Please see me for a brochure if you are interested. BRIDGE AT THE RECTORY: Friday, January 25, 7:00 PM. All are welcome, veteran players and those who would like to learn to play. If you are coming, please call the Parish Office ( ) so we can be ready for you. THE YEAR OF FAITH: Here is another selection from Read the Catechism in a Year, which offers daily s whereby one can read the Catechism of the Catholic Church during the Year of Faith. This one comes from Day 65 and is entitled: Christ. 436 The word "Christ" comes from the Greek translation of the Hebrew Messiah, which means "anointed". It became the name proper to Jesus only because he accomplished perfectly the divine mission that "Christ" signifies. In effect, in Israel those consecrated to God for a mission that he gave were anointed in his name. This was the case for kings, for priests and, in rare instances, for prophets. This had to be the case all the more so for the Messiah whom God would send to inaugurate his kingdom definitively. It was necessary that the Messiah be anointed by the Spirit of the Lord at once as king and priest, and also as prophet. Jesus fulfilled the messianic hope of Israel in his threefold office of priest, prophet and king. 437 To the shepherds, the angel announced the birth of Jesus as the Messiah promised to Israel: "To you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." From the beginning he was "the one whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world", conceived as "holy" in Mary's virginal womb. God called Joseph to "take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit", so that Jesus, "who is called Christ", should be born of Joseph's spouse into the messianic lineage of David. 438 Jesus' messianic consecration reveals his divine mission, "for the name 'Christ' implies 'he who anointed', 'he who was anointed' and 'the very anointing with which he was anointed'. The one who anointed is the Father, the one who was anointed is the Son, and he was anointed with the Spirit who is the anointing.'" His eternal messianic consecration was revealed during the time of his earthly life at the moment of his baptism by John, when "God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power", "that he might be revealed to Israel" as its Messiah. His works and words will manifest him as "the Holy One of God." 439 Many Jews and even certain Gentiles who shared their hope recognized in Jesus the fundamental attributes of the messianic "Son of David", promised by God to Israel. Jesus accepted his rightful title of Messiah, though with some reserve because it was understood by some of his contemporaries in too human a sense, as essentially political. 440 Jesus accepted Peter's profession of faith, which acknowledged him to be the Messiah, by announcing the imminent Passion of the Son of Man. He unveiled the authentic content of his messianic kingship both in the transcendent identity of the Son of Man "who came down from heaven", and in his redemptive mission as the suffering Servant: "The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Hence the true meaning of his kingship is revealed only when he is raised high on the cross. Only after his Resurrection will Peter be able to proclaim Jesus' messianic kingship to the People of God: "Let all the house of Israel therefore know assuredly that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified." 4 In the Gospel today, at the wedding feast in Cana, Jesus reveals himself to his disciples and they began to believe in him. Everyday, God also gives us signs of his love and so we also can respond in faith and trust. Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul becomes a sign of God's love to those who are suffering and you give them reason to believe and to trust. DO YOU KNOW YOUR STRENGTHS? Consider attending a 6-week seminar to help you discover and understand your strengths which will help you in your job, relationships, and life in general. Unemployed, need to change jobs, looking for a career, curious to know your strengths? This seminar is perfect for you. We will meet on Monday evenings from 7-8:30 in the St. Cletus Room, Jan 28 thru March 4. The cost of the book is $15 which you will pay the first evening of the seminar when you receive your book. It is a great opportunity to experience more fully the love of God in our lives through spiritual talks and sharing faith with others in our community. Building our personal relationship with our God and sharing our faith with old and new friends makes this retreat perfect for the Lenten Season. This is what others have said about their retreat experience: QUOTES "The CRHP experience changed my life. Throughout the weekend, God's amazing love for us was demonstrated through many beautiful and spiritual women. This experience strengthened my love for God, Church and my Catholic faith. CRHP was truly a blessing for me!"---celia Stolin "CRHP has been a terrific experience for me as it allowed me to meet new friends and share some of life's experiences. To see how God's hand is woven into everyone's life and how He has brought people through the difficult times in life is a very affirming, wonderful experience. Every parishioner should try to attend one of these retreats. Your life will be forever changed."---mike Sepe Women's weekend - February 16-17, 2013 Men's weekend - March 2-3, 2013 Signups for both retreats will begin at Weekend Masses January More information is available in the Gathering Space. Any questions call Dennis Williams, or Michele Brauch, No one should ignore or underestimate the decisive role of the family, which is the basic cell of society from the demographic, ethical, pedagogical, economic and political standpoints. The family has a natural vocation to promote life: it accompanies individuals as they mature and it encourages mutual growth and enrichment through caring and sharing. The Christian family in particular serves as a seedbed for personal maturation according to the standards of divine love. The family is one of the indispensable social subjects for the achievement of a culture of peace. The rights of parents and their primary role in the education of their children in the area of morality and religion must be safeguarded. It is in the family that peacemakers, tomorrow s promoters of a culture of life and love, are born and nurtured. Pope Benedict XVI, Message for World Day of Peace January 1, 2013 RCIA This Week and Next This Week s Topic 1/24: Sacrament of Marriage meet in Church Next Week's Topic 1/31: Sacrament of Holy Ordersmeet in Duchesne Room Meetings held at 7:00PM. Please plan on attending if you are interested in learning more about these topics. All, not just those in RCIA, are welcome! EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Come and immerse yourself in the love of Jesus! If you have a really good friend, or if you are married, then you know what it takes to be in a relationship with someone. Two of the most important things you can do to deepen your friendship is to spend time together, and to talk with each other frequently. Eucharistic Adoration is the best way we have on this earth to spend a long time in quiet conversation with Jesus. You ll recall that just before Jesus physically left the apostles and ascended to the Father, he reassured them, And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age. (Matthew 28:20) The best friend and the love of our souls is Jesus Christ. Yet many of us suffer from a feeling that we don t really know who Jesus is, or we don t feel like we have a personal relationship with Him. Come and spend time with Jesus! Please call or Jan if you would like to become an adorer. We are in need of an adorer for Thursday morning at 3:00am. Thank you! A TAX TIP: Congress has extended the IRA Charitable Rollovers for calendar years 2012 and The IRA Charitable Rollove rules allow individuals 70½ or older to donate, annually, up to $100,000 directly from their IRAs to qualified charities without paying taxes on the distributions. For more information, or for help with the special substantiation that these gifts require, please contact Ms. Jeanne Rudolph in the Planned Giving Department for the Archdiocese of St. Louis (jrudolph@archstl.org or ).

7 Sunday, Jan. 27, 7:00 PM, in our Parish Hall FACING THE GIANTS is about a down-and-out coach and football team at a Christian high school, struggling with the giants on the field and off. Failure, betrayal, fear, and hopelessness overwhelm the coach as he deals with a lackluster team, disgruntled parents, financial pressures, and the discovery that he and his wife can t have children. As he turns to God, his life begins to change. This is a beautiful family film, and you are invited by the members of our parish s Adult Formation Committee as well as of our Legion of Mary to view this film and participate in a discussion about it. All are welcome, but please mark your calendars now for Sunday, Jan. 27, 7:00 PM, in our Parish Hall. Small Church Communities 2013 St. Cletus will again conduct Small Church sessions during the Lenten season beginning Feb. 11 thru Mar.23, These sessions have been held the past few years and have been very successful based on the evaluations received from the participants. A number of group leaders have offered to hold the sessions at their homes again. Due to the changes in some of the participants, schedules, etc., there will be openings in some groups. Sign-up sheets will be included in the bulletins the weekends of Jan. 26/27 and Feb. 2/3 for those who would like to join a group or form their own. Those participants that are returning to their former groups will NOT be required to sign up for their group again. Because of the past success of Small Church, we are encouraging parishioners to seriously devoting an hour and a half each week during Lent sharing our faith, praying together, and discussing scripture in preparation for the following Sunday. Fr. Benz will cover this very important ministry in his column in later this month. If you have any questions please call Ed Andrzejewski, ( ) or cueandro32@charter.net.
