3 MORE ODDS & ENDS, SMORGASBORD, POTPOURRI: a bunch of stuff for your attention : This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday: Please note our Mass times for this special day (6:30 AM, 8:00 AM, & 7:00 PM) as well as the fact that it is a day of Fast and Abstinence. The Special Lenten Insert in Today s Bulletin: Please use those magnets on your fridge to post and to keep this special summary of all things Lenten going on at St. Cletus during this special time. The Nails: Lent is a time for us to remember how it was us all by our sins that made Jesus redeem us on that cross. The square nails distributed today are to remind us of the sacrifice endured by Jesus for us. Seeing those old style nails reminds me of when I was assigned to Assumption in O Fallon. In, I believe, 1981, the parish decided to tear down its old rectory built in 1873 (I can tell you stories about that rectory!) and replace it with the current one. I remember seeing all those square nails in the debris used in its original construction. Those old type nails are a good reminder that temptation, sin, forgiveness, and healing are perennial issues and glories for us humans. The Lenten Catholic Update: I hope that you will make regular use of these thoughts from Ste. Therese of Lisieux, possibly reading them with grace before meals. She is a wonderful guide for us all during this special season, she who wrote: I knew that the Church had a heart and that such a heart appeared to be aflame with love. I knew that one love drove the members of the Church to action, that if this love were extinguished, the apostles would have proclaimed the Gospel no longer, the martyrs would have shed their blood no more. I saw and realized that love sets off the bounds of all vocations, that love is everything, that this same love embraces every time and every place. In one word, that love is everlasting. Then, nearly ecstatic with the supreme joy in my soul, I proclaimed: O Jesus, my love, at last I have found my calling: my call is love.in the heart of the Church, I will be love. Project Life and Liberty : Also inserted in today s bulletin is information about Project Life and Liberty. Next weekend, you will have the opportunity to ask members of Congress to respect life and religious freedom by signing a postcard which will then be mailed to our senators and representative. Please read this background material. Fish Fries: I am amazed at the popularity of our Fish Fries and how far people come for them, but we need your help in working on these Friday s of Lent as well as in providing desserts. To sign up to work, you can either go to (our link is vols.pt/rgg9vy) or by contacting Michele Brauch at brauchmi@yahoo.com Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowls: You will find them in our Gathering Space. As Archbishop Carlson writes, Nearly 13,000 parishes and schools across the United States participate in CRS Rice Bowl each Lent. Since 1975, Catholics have donated more than $200 million to help the poor through CRS Rice Bowl. Please be sure to use it. Please Remember That Our New Lighthouse Media CD Is Available: Trust in the Lord by Father Thomas Richter. A great Lenten theme. Again a $3 donation would be appreciated. Our Lenten Speaker Series: Please note that Father Mike Esswein, the first presenter of our series, is speaking next Sunday, February 17. Father Esswein was severely injured with a broken neck in an automobile accident years ago, uses a wheelchair, and has limited use of his extremities. You will find his insights to be most valuable. Ladies, It s Not Too Late to sign up for next weekend s Women s CRHP. See the notice here for more details! THE YEAR OF FAITH: Here is another selection from Read the Catechism in a Year, which offers daily s whereby one can read the Catechism of the Catholic Church during the Year of Faith. This one comes again from Day 88 and is entitled Christ's whole life is an offering to the Father: 606 The Son of God, who came down "from heaven, not to do [his] own will, but the will of him who sent [him]," said on coming into the world, "Lo, I have come to do your will, O God." "And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." From the first moment of his Incarnation the Son embraces the Father's plan of divine salvation in his redemptive mission: "My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to accomplish his work." The sacrifice of Jesus "for the sins of the whole world" expresses his loving communion with the Father. "The Father loves me, because I lay down my life," said the Lord, "[for] I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father." 607 The desire to embrace his Father's plan of redeeming love inspired Jesus' whole life, for his redemptive passion was the very reason for his Incarnation. And so he asked, "And what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, for this purpose I have come to this hour." And again, "Shall I not drink the cup which the Father has given me?" From the cross, just before "It is finished", he said, "I thirst." 608 After agreeing to baptize him along with the sinners, John the Baptist looked at Jesus and pointed him out as the "Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world". By doing so, he reveals that Jesus is at the same time the suffering Servant who silently allows himself to be led to the slaughter and who bears the sin of the multitudes, and also the Paschal Lamb, the symbol of Israel's redemption at the first Passover. Christ's whole life expresses his mission: "to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." 609 By embracing in his human heart the Father's love for men, Jesus "loved them to the end", for "greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." In suffering and death his humanity became the free and perfect instrument of his divine love which desires the salvation of men. Indeed, out of love for his Father and for men, whom the Father wants to save, Jesus freely accepted his Passion and death: "No one takes [my life] from me, but I lay it down of my own accord." Hence the sovereign freedom of God's Son as he went out to his death.
4 In the Gospel today, the disciples decide to leave everything to follow Jesus. We are also called to follow Jesus, who tells us that "whatever you do to the least of mine, you do for me." Your gift to the poor through our Poor Box in the rear of the church can bring the love and peace of Jesus to those who live in fear and doubt, loneliness and dread. Pro-Life Collection Children in grades three through eight have been collecting funds to help support our Parish Pro-Life efforts. Each class is filling a baby bottle with their donations and will continue through Feb. 11. Thank you for your support of Life for all pre-born babies! Lenten Activity Students in each PSR class have signed their names on crosses as a way of expressing their willingness to journey with Jesus through this Lenten season. These will be included with crosses from our students in St. Cletus Day School and displayed on one large Lenten cross in the lobby of our school. Peace in society is also put at risk by certain threats to religious liberty; it is a question sometimes of the marginalization of religion in social life; sometimes of intolerance or even of violence towards individuals, symbols of religious identity and religious institutions. It even happens that believers and Christians in particular, are prevented from contributing to the common good by their educational and charitable institutions. In order effectively to safeguard the exercise of religious liberty it is essential to respect the right of conscientious objection. This frontier of liberty touches upon principles of great importance rooted in the very dignity of the human person. They are as it were, the (load-) bearing walls of any society that wishes to be truly free and democratic. * On February 16 and 17 you will have the opportunity to ask members of Congress to come together to respect life and religious freedom by signing a postcard which will then be mailed to our senators and representative. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION By spending quiet and prayerful time in the Chapel, in the presence of the Exposed Eucharist, we get closer to Jesus Christ Himself. May our Adoration never cease.-pope John Paul II Please call or Jan if you would like to become an adorer. We are in need of an adorer for Thursday mornings at 3:00am and Friday mornings at 8:00 am and Friday afternoons at 5:00pm. Thank you! CHRIST RENEWS HIS PARISH Christ Renews His Parish is a weekend retreat designed for the men and women of our parish.
