The closing date was Saturday 15 th April and the new roll is displayed on the board in the Welcome area, together with a list of people who have been removed from the roll. If you have any queries about the Electoral Roll please speak to Richard Crawley in church or phone him on Annual General Meeting The Parish meeting to elect churchwardens will be held on Sunday 30 th April in church at pm, followed by the AGM. This year, there are elections for our 4 Deanery Synod representatives, as well as 7 vacancies for PCC members. In the first instance, please speak to Lee if you might be interested in standing for any of these positions. Nomination forms are at the back of church and completed forms should be returned to Dizzy Prentice, PCC Secretary, by hand, or via the Safeguarding tray in the Minister s Vestry.
3 St Giles AGM preceded by a Bring and Share Lunch We will be holding our AGM following the 10.30am service on Sunday 30 th April. Please do try to stay for this meeting; it is important in the life of our church. We will be reviewing the past year with thanksgiving, looking at our finances and electing a proportion of our PCC members. There will be a bring and share parish lunch before the AGM, an opportunity for us to spend some extra time together as a church family, so please bring something tasty to share with everyone. Do you have a Spare Room? Sarah Slack s daughter Sophie is studying at Valencia University and a couple of Spanish friends from there are coming to Nottingham for 3 months from June to improve their English. Does anyone have a spare room/granny flat that they could rent? They would be independent and cook etc. for themselves. The students will be back at University in Spain in September. They are expecting to pay for the accommodation. If anyone can help please call Sarah on Book Groups The Afternoon Group are reading Not Forgetting the Whale by John Ironmonger and will be meeting on Monday 24th April at 3.00pm in the Church Hall Meeting Room to share their views! The Evening Group are reading The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah and will meet to talk about it at Daphne's (49 Cambridge Road) on Monday 1 st May at 8.00pm. New readers are welcome - for more details, please ask Johanna Langheld. Calling all Cricketers! Well, the blossom is out and it's time to turn our minds to the sporting events of the summer - the annual slog against the Holy Spirit Church. We have two games, on Sunday 11 th June (2pm) and Thursday 13 th July (5.30pm-ish). If you would like to play, please contact Matt Keown on or speak to him in church all standards are very welcome, and most especially if you re new to St Giles! Adventure Golf The next Seniors event is a game of Adventure Golf at the Cornerhouse on Friday 21 st April. Meet in the Golf reception at 11am. This always proves to be an enjoyable and competitive morning with a prize for the lowest score. A sign up sheet is at the back of church so we can book our places. Knitting and Sewing Group There will not be a meeting in April, as the third Monday in April is Easter Monday. The next meeting will be on Monday 15 th May at 2.00pm in the Church Hall Meeting Room. Road to Freedom In May this year one of our congregation, Peter Rhodes, will be participating in a fundraising event for the Snowdrop Project. This charity helps survivors of people trafficking by providing long term help and rehabilitation, reducing the risk of
4 repeated trafficking. It will be familiar to many who attended the Women s Breakfast where its founder and CEO Lara spoke so movingly about their vital work. For more details take a look at snowdropproject.co.uk. The Road to Freedom fundraiser aims to secure the services of a counsellor and involves cycle 140 miles from Prague to Dresden, over 3 days. Peter will be covering the costs in taking part himself, so all donations will go straight to the charity - Peter s target is 1100! Please help him to achieve this by going to or see Peter in church. Thank you. 5 Calling All Walking Footballers, Young And Old! St Luke's Gamston are organising a mini walking football tournament with St Mary s, East Leake on Saturday 6th May, at East Leake Leisure Centre, and we d love to enter teams from St. Giles'. All participating churches are providing two teams of 5 players (plus 2 or more substitutes): one team of under 50s, and one team of over 50s. St Luke s have been running walking football matches as a great, low-key way to evangelise, introducing non-church people into a church social setting. So, if you would like to join our St. Giles teams on this Saturday, and especially if you would like to invite your non-church friends, please get in contact with Tim Chambers (details on back of bulletin). We look forward to seeing you there! 6 St Giles Mission Partners From the Friends International Prayer Diary: Every year at Word Alive a number of internationals attend who are not Christian. For these individuals it is important that what they have learned isn t a one-off but that Christians back home can follow up with them after the event. Pray that these students would see and experience the powerful gospel of Jesus Christ and that Christians would be able to come around them and be the positive influence they need. Elizabeth & David Dunford are now home from their visit to Lesotho. It was wonderful to see the progress made at Fusi school. Your pens and pencils were safely delivered and photos can be seen on the mission notice-board. We look forward to telling everyone more about developments there and why your continuing support is still needed. Please continue to bring your donations (esp. jeans waist 30 & 32 ) into church (box near the front door) or take them to the Friary on Musters Road, or to their depot at Unit 6C Ludlow Hill Road, WB, NG2 6HF open Tuesdays and Thursdays 10am 3pm. Thank you. Raffle and Auction Prizes for Christian Aid Rachel Gregory is sourcing prizes for the raffle and auction that will take place at the Christian Aid event on Saturday 20 th May. If you have an object or particular skill that you could offer (a couple of hours gardening, a night's babysitting or a culinary skill perhaps?), do please chat to Rachel in church or contact her on rachelsgregory@btinternet.com or or Please see the following page for details of this year s events for Christian Aid Week.
7 christian aid week 2017 Christian Aid Week was set up 60 years ago to help refugees in Europe following the Second World War. Christian Aid's focus this year for Christian Aid week is refugees stuck in camps in Southern Europe, unable to return to their home countries due to war or famine, and unwelcome elsewhere. Nejebar s family fled Afghanistan after the Taliban threatened to kill her husband, Noor, who was a teacher. When the family arrived at the refugee camp in Greece, they thought they would only stay for 10 days. But they ve been there six months now. Their only protection against the wind and rain is a tent. There is no school for their children. The safe peaceful future they long for seems like a distant dream. Let's act to help relieve suffering and build a world where everyone has a safe place to call home. The Big Event will take place in church on Saturday 20 th May, pm. There will be food & bar, raffle & auction, bingo, quiz sheets and fabulous jazz entertainment from Paul Ricard & friends! The evening is suitable for all ages do invite your friends along! Tickets will be available later this month: 7.50 for adults, 2.50 for children. The Plant Sale will be held as usual in mid May, so please wait to buy your tomato, vegetable and flower plants from green fingered Averyl, Dizzy and co, rather than rushing off to the garden centre before then! Lots of other fundraising activities will be taking place through the week, including the House to House Collections and the Friday Cake Break (on Friday 12 th May). If you would like to get involved in the fundraising effort for Christian Aid in May then please do speak to Rachel Gregory after the 9am service on Sundays. rachelsgregory@btinternet.com or or
