1 St Giles Bulletin 22nd January 2017 Week of Christian Unity 9.00am Holy Communion 2 Corinthians 5 v (p.1161) Matthew 8 v 1-5 (p.972) United in Christ 10.00am Coffee and refreshments 10.30am Informal Worship Soon after the start of the service, our children & youth groups begin: Sunbeams (ages 2½ - 4½) & Junior Church (primary age) meet in the hall. Youth meet in the church welcome area and then go over to Lutterell Hall. At the rear of church is The Haven, a glazed room where parents can take babies or children who are too young to join the children s groups and need some space to wriggle, crawl or cry! There are toys and books in boxes underneath the seats to help keep babies and toddlers entertained, but please be aware that the room is not soundproof. The church hall can be found through the rear doors of the church. In the hall you will find toilets and baby changing facilities (in the disabled toilet). Lunch at The Shepherds The next Seniors event is lunch at the Shepherds on Friday 27 th January at 12.30pm. The Cotgrave Connection bus runs from the Avenue and drops you right outside the Shepherds. There is a sign up sheet at the back of Church. Please indicate if you require transport. Appeal for Pens and Pencils Elizabeth and David Dunford will shortly be visiting our mission partner school in Lesotho. It would be lovely if the people of St Giles gave a pen and a pencil to each student (there are 160 of them).there will be a box at the back of church for contributions during January. Morning Prayer with the Churches of West Bridgford This is the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. On Tuesday 24 th January St Giles will be welcoming people from other churches in West Bridgford to Morning Prayers at 9.15am. Please join us if you can. There will be an opportunity to chat over coffee afterwards. Men s Social This month s meet up will take place on Monday 30 th January. All men are welcome to come along to the Willow Tree pub from 8pm if you would like any more information please speak to Tony Vokes in church. Room to Let Lovely large furnished, double room with ensuite and dressing area for single person, available in quiet family house, West Bridgford. Situated in residential area behind St Pauls' Church on Boundary Road, it is within very easy access of both ring road and West Bridgford / Nottingham centre by car or regular bus routes; Sharphill Woods is on the doorstep too. Could you volunteer for the Jericho Road Project? Jericho Road is recruiting new volunteers. Their vision is Showing Jesus love and hope to those affected by the sex industry in Nottinghamshire. The direct contact project areas are; Street Outreach (including van drivers), Life Centre and Befriending, Off-Street Parlour Visiting and Prison Visiting. The indirect contact project areas are; Prayer Team and Baking. Family Care I am pleased to let everyone know that the congregation of St Giles donated last year to Family Care, which is of course on top of all the toys donated at Christmas. Just a reminder that I am happy to take the money from your collection boxes at any time. If you would just put the money into a bag with your name on and bring it to Church (if Brendan or I are not there the wardens will put it in the safe for me to collect). 4 St Giles: Come for Breakfast The next women s breakfast will take place in the George Chapel on Saturday 25 th February am. The theme is Waiting on the Lord. Barbara Young will be speaking about the life changing injuries her son sustained after a skiing accident and how he has come back fighting as a paralympic kayaker. Tickets are now on sale from Debbie Keown and Angela Fifer at a cost of just 3. Come and enjoy food for body and soul with worship, teaching, breakfast and chat. Romanian Orphanage Opportunity Would you like to join us on a week long trip to Romania in the summer? For several years, Barry and Katie Clarke have volunteered at Little John's House, a small privately run orphanage for 6 young people with additional needs, helping run the summer school. During the summer school around 30 children come from the local state orphanages and hospital for games, fun and laughter. This is often one of the few opportunities some of these children get to play. If you would like any more information, please speak to one of us in church. Book Groups The Afternoon Group is reading Miss Carter s War by Sheila Hancock and will be meeting to discuss the book on Monday 30 th January at 3pm in the Church Hall Meeting Room. The January choice for the Evening Group is The Winter Children by LuLu Taylor The group are meeting at 8pm on Monday 30 th January at Dizzy s house (141 Loughborough Road). Please note that this is a correction to the book advertised in last week s bulletin, which has a very similar title, and also a change to the venue (due to a bookshelf calamity occurring at Johanna s house). Newcomers are very welcome at both groups - just turn up! Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2017 This year s week of prayer for Christian Unity runs from Wednesday 18th January until Wednesday 25th January. In West Bridgford we are continuing our practice of hosting prayer meetings in different churches in different styles and inviting one another to join us. Not all of the arrangements are finalised yet, but some to note already are: Sunday 22 nd January Celebration Service pm Lutterell Hall including news of a Christians Against Poverty initiative in West Bridgford Monday 23 rd January Prayers for West Bridgford at 12pm - Renew37-37 Abbey Road Tuesday 24 th January 9.15am Morning Prayer at St Giles followed by coffee You are warmly invited to come to any of the events that you can.

5 To serve and equip young people on their journey of faith in Christ. Youth Nights are held on Fridays from 7.30 to 9.30pm. All youth are very welcome and please do bring friends along too. There are some thought provoking reflections from several of our congregation who work in the legal profession, on how being a Christian impacts the work that they do. And Lee introduces a new sermon series which will start next week, exploring the theme of whole life discipleship with the aim of deepening our faith in Christ.

6 Hands at Work - Zambia 2017 Are you still considering how to start your summer holidays? Want to glimpse how God is at work in the world today? This summer St Giles has another opportunity to visit Zambia with Hands at Work in Africa ( to join the Zambian church's efforts in supporting the most vulnerable children and their families. Please do speak to Graham or Kat Rooke if you want to know more about Hands at Work and for full details of the trip. We would love you to pray and consider joining them!

7 St Giles Mission Partners From the Friends International Prayer Diary: Friends International Lancaster is taking some time during January and February to review some of our activities for international students. With lower numbers of students, changing demographics, and difficulty in finding local volunteers for the International Café we need to assess the way forward. We would value your prayers as we look to doing things differently and communicating with local churches and to the student body. The Friends International Prayer Diary for January to April and Opportunity update are available at the back of church. Bargain Sale Fundraiser The next Bargain Sale is being held on Saturday 28 th January, 10am 12noon, at St Luke s Church. Entrance fee 50p. Great bargains on offer with stalls including adult s/children s clothes, books, household & electrical items, toys, bric-a-brac, jewellery, handmade cards and a tombola. Hope to see you there. Ha Fusi school in Lesotho would like to thank St Giles for donating the magnificent sum of from the nativity service. Elizabeth & David Dunford will be visiting the school in February and look forward to updating everyone on progress there. I Witness is a photo exhibition currently at Southwell Minster showing life-changing projects funded by Christian Aid, taking place in Haiti today. It runs from January 20th to February 25th, and includes photography, artwork and people's stories. The exhibition is free and open to all. I Witness invites visitors to see the extraordinary work that Christian Aid is supporting through its partner organisations in Haiti, and meet some of the inspirational people who are rebuilding their lives in the face of the most overwhelming odds.
