The Rector s Letter Grace to you and peace. The month of May always signifies the beginning of the summer period. The evenings are so much brighter and we all feel that the holidays are just around the corner. In Parish life similar feelings abound. Things start to slow down and the organisations prepare for the summer recess. The 5 th Company Girls Brigade has already had their Display which took place in St. Paul s, Vernon Ave. This was a wonderful testament to the work of all the leaders, many of which come from our own Parish. Our BB is preparing for its display on 14 th at 7.30 pm in the Parish Hall. The Anchor Boys, under the care of Heather McCullagh, the Junior Section under the care of Mark Acheson and the Company Section under the care of Alan Ayling are working very hard in preparation for the Annual display. I hope many of you will come along and support the huge work the leaders are doing with the boys. The Bowls Club will have its AGM on the 10 th and this is always a great social event. Hope to see you all there. Sunday School finishes up for the summer on 29 th May. Thanks to all the work that was put in over the year by our regular teachers: Jean, Heather and Stephanie and their helper Conor, alongside those who helped out when we were stuck. Children, and teachers, have a great summer! Our Parish Centre Project continues at a pace. The Design Team have met with the Property Sub-Committee and we move forward towards the tender being released. By September or October we will really see things start to happen on the ground. Everyone is very excited and look forward to the changes that will be facilitated by its development. Since the first Sunday in February, when the Archbishop was with us, the Columbarium has seen much activity. It has proved a great success and many Parishioners have enquired concerning its use. Seven niches have already been used and a number of others will be used in the weeks and months ahead. If you are interested in finding out more details about the Columbarium, please contact Colin on or Hazel on

We have had a very exciting year, with some very successful fund-raising. The Parish Sale brought in just over When we embarked on the idea of taking on a Youth and Children s Pastor we felt that the Parish would need to run a further fund-raiser each year to help pay for it. Clive Jackson, John Patten and Stuart McConnell took on the responsibility of running just such an event. The Select Vestry unanimously agreed that a single event should happen each year. On Thursday 14 th April a Race Nite took place to raise the money needed. This was a wonderful social event and those who attended had great fun in a warm and happy environment. There was such a deep sense of community and it turned out to be hugely successful. It raised just over We are deeply grateful to the three who put in so much work into the night. Alongside the three members of the Select Vestry there were a number of Clive s staff present who also worked hard to make it the success it was. It has placed the Youth and Children s Pastor project firmly on the map and we are delighted to announce that Ms Naomi Quinn will take up her position in late summer. You will see the advert on the cover of this magazine for the Crosslinks Holiday Camp being run from 25 th 29 th July. This is being staffed and run by the Crosslinks Organisation. They are an Anglican Missionary Agency who work both in Ireland and abroad. This will be great fun and I suspect very popular. Young people from the Parish need to give their names so as we can hold places for them. The Crosslinks Team will be with us on the Sunday before the Camp (24 th July) to launch the camp and it will be an opportunity for them to meet children and parents alike year olds, who would like to help, should contact me as the Crosslinks Co-Ordinator, Sarah Keene, would like to meet you all very soon. Yours in the Service of Jesus, Derek

Flower Guild The Flower Guild AGM was held on Sat. 2nd April at 10.30am. in the Hall. New members are urgently required. No experience is necessary. Suitable dates can be arranged. If you like working with flowers here is an opportunity to fulfill your ambition and serve your parish. B. Gallagher/ I. Acheson Flower Beds Sincere thanks, yet again, to our great neighbour Patsy Rooney, for providing and planting lovely daffodils, and other plants in the four beds outside the church gates. Indeed, the work done by this lady in keeping the many other flower beds, and the area in general, looking so well, is much admired and appreciated. S. Jackson. Reflection Our morning Sunday service in Eastertide often ends on the note of that lovely blessing which speaks of: Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep. It brings to mind the much-loved and often used Psalm 23 which is often referred to as the Shepherd Psalm. This psalm, worded so beautifully and of such a comforting tone is profound in meaning and contains a wealth of information pertinent to our walk in Christ s fold. We must always bear in mind that our Shepherd leads us from the front as distinct from the cattle-driving from the rear, with which we are familiar. In Scripture, we are urged to follow in his footsteps along a safe path however narrow, tested and tried by Divine feet, lest any foot should slip. We read further that He knows His sheep and calls them (us) by name. Furthermore, the sheep of His fold know His voice. This surely emphasises a very personal relationship and reminds us that we are in this fold from choice and not compulsion. To reiterate, we follow the Leader we are not rounded-up and compulsorily driven.

In Biblical times, the shepherd, David being the type and shadow of Jesus, The Shepherd, had a humble profession by worldly standards but his duties were onerous. Sheep and their lambs were a vital commodity. The flock required protection day and night, from many hazards, including attacks by savage wild animals. And they tended to stray. This has a familiar ring. Jesus speaks of himself as the door, by me if anyone enter in, he shall be saved (safe). This refers to the custom of gathering the sheep at nightfall into an enclosure with just one entry/ exit. When all were safely gathered-in, the shepherd lay across the entry thus ensuring that nothing or no-one could infiltrate his fold without his knowledge. This is our protection and safeguard in our Shepherd s fold. There is an added bonus should one stray or slip, He will rescue us! One recalls that old hymn The Ninety and Nine. We should remember that we are a privileged people, and be thankful. A Maharry. Clontarf Tennis Club The season opens on Saturday 7 th May at 3 pm with an American Tournament followed by a BBQ. All new members are welcome on that day. Club play takes place on Tuesday nights from 7.30 pm. For further details, please contact Nigel on th Company BB Anchor Boys The Boys Brigade Display will be on Saturday 14 th May at 7.30 pm in the Parish Hall. There are seven boys going up to Junior Section: Sam Acheson, Jordan O Brien, Ronan Birch, Matthew Dawkins, Robert Duggan, Richard Gleeson and Alex Rafferty. I would like to wish these boys all the best in Junior Section. I look forward to all the boys meeting for the display and I hope you will all come and enjoy the night. I would like to thank Lorraine Maxwell, Rhoda McConnell, Maire Gaffney and Mary Murphy for helping each week and to Roy Watts for looking after the accounts for Anchor Boys H. McCullagh

Junior Section The boys are busy doing achievements gaining those precious badges before the end of term. Everyone is busy preparing for the annual display on Saturday 14 th May at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall. The boys will also have their movie night shortly, with Sponge Bob appearing to be the favourite! H. Cassidy. Clontarf Junior Badminton Club On Saturday 9 th April the finals of the tournament took place. There were three finals. Casey Stirling and Geoffrey Garrett won the singles tournaments. The Doubles Tournament was won by Lauren Maxwell and Alison Sheil. Trevor is retiring as coach of the Junior Club though, no doubt, I m sure he will pop in and out from time to time. Thanks were expressed to Elaine and himself for all the work they have done with the club. Young Women s Group We met on Thursday 21 st April. We went bowling in UCI and there was a good turn out and everyone had a great time.

Bowlers extraordinaire relax between frames (l to R) Breda Sargent, Diane Kitching and Pam Finnegan We retired to that well known hostelry, Harry Byrne s on the Howth Road. A meal is being planned for next month to mark the end of the first season. Thanks to all who have made this new organisation such a great success. Why not come along and meet new friends, particularly if you are new to the Parish. B. Sargent / H McCullagh. GB Past Members On Thursday 5 th May at 8pm in the Minor Hall, Mr. Hayden will lead a musical evening with the music of Paul Robson. All are welcome. I. McMullen Bowling Club Hopefully, our Hon Secretary is enjoying a well earned holiday. The Race Nite was thoroughly enjoyed by a good representation from the bowling club, with some winners maybe more losers!! The Club Tournaments are in full swing and so far all matches have been keenly contested in a true sporting spirit and have been enjoyed by participants and spectators alike. It is hoped that all members together with any new members will be in attendance at the AGM on Tuesday 10 th May in the Hall at 8pm. This always proves to be a very pleasant social evening (there will be light refreshments). E. Maude

Sunday School Society Fun Day On Sunday 24 th April we attended the fun day organized by the Society at St. Andrew s College. There was dancing, crafts, sports and a fantastic bouncy castle and super-slide. Four car loads attended from Clontarf and great fun was had by all. (Ryan, Graham and Peter pose with their craft creations) Thanks are due to the Revd Anne Taylor and the SSS for putting on a great day for families. D Sargent 5 th Company Girls Brigade As there are so many girls in the 5 th Company Girls Brigade from all Churches in the Clontarf area we, the Officers, would like to give all parishioners a small synopsis of our last session which culminated in our Annual Display on Friday 22 nd April 2005 in St. Paul s College, Sybil Hill Road. This year we took 1, in at the door which we donate to a charity Temple Street Childrens Hospital is the recipient this year. Our thanks to all who contributed to this total. The 5 th Co. meet on Saturday afternoons in Howth Road School for the Explorer Section ages 2 to 8 year olds and on Monday evenings from 6.30p.m. to 9.45p.m. for 9 years of age to 19 and upwards! Our session is from the end of September until the Annual Display which takes place at the end of April and, because of the number of activities we take part in, is a very packed session indeed.

Every Monday we have Scripture classes for the Juniors/Seniors and Brigader Sections and then in February of each year the girls sit a test for which there is a Battalion Scripture Shield this year the 5 th Co. came in 5 th place with the girls obtaining exceptionally high marks. We also work for P.E. Competitions which are held in January/February each year and are for all sections of the company. This year we had 2 Explorer Teams, 2 Junior/Senior Teams, 1 Brigader Team, 1 Associate Team, 3 Solo Skippers, 3 Brigader Soloists and 3 Associate Soloists entered and all did very well with 2 of our teams coming in 5 th place and our Associate Team (4 girls) coming in 4 th place, also our Associate Soloist Edel McCormack gained 1 st place in the National Finals and one of our Brigader Soloists Casey Stirling came through a preliminary round to gain a place in the National Final and then came in 5 th place. In November/December each year we compete in Choral Speaking Competitions this year we entered 1 Explorer Team and 2 Junior/Senior Teams all teams performed very well. In the Battalion Feis Competition held in November 04 we had girls from all sections entered and in the Junior Section Evelyn Dawkins was Highly Commended, in the Senior Section Rachel Simpson was placed 2 nd and in the Brigader Section 14 years and over Lauren Maxwell was placed 3 rd. During December 04 our Explorers, as part of their Badgework, made Christmas Tree Decorations and also all of the Company were involved in the Samaritan s Purse Shoe Box appeal with the younger girls filling the boxes and then the older girls going out to the warehouse in North Dublin and checking and shipping out same. Also in December the Junior/Senior and Brigader Sections go Carol Singing around the Marino Area and we raised the sum of 400 which we donated to charity. The older girls and some of the Officers also went out to St. Ita s Hospital, Portrane at Christmas and sang Carols for the residents and staff a most enjoyable evening. The Explorer Section 6 8 year olds also did some carol singing in Clontarf Private Nursing Home which the residents enjoyed.

On the 20 th January 05 we held a Quiz in Clontarf Rugby Club to raise money for St. Mary s Hospital, Baldoyle and although a very wet evening we raised 1, a terrific result. All in all we have had a great 2004/2005 Session we would at this point ask anyone who knows of any girls who would be interested in coming along to either Saturday (ages 2 8) or Monday (ages 9 upwards) Classes to contact either Lesley O Byrne or the Captain Margery McElhinney at we would love to welcome new members. L. O Byrne Sunday School On Sunday 27 th February, 2 teams from our Sunday School took part in the Dublin and Glendalough Brainarama Table Quiz held in St Andrew s College Blackrock. This year our teams were Nicola Taylor, Kim Acheson, Emma Jackson, Graham Maxwell, Ryan McConnell and Adam Cassidy. Our teams did very well taking medals for third place. Congratulations and well done! As always, the quiz was well-organised, fun, on time and challenged both old and young. There were questions that everyone could have a go at but there were a number of tough ones thrown in for good measure. We all learned something, leaders, parents and students. As a Sunday School, we enjoyed taking part and we got an appreciation of the many other Sunday Schools working away around the Dioceses. On April 24 th there was the Sunday School Fun Day for our diocese. This was a great day out for those who took part. It was held in St. Andrews College Booterstown. There was something for all to enjoy. There was enormous bouncy castle/slide, arts & crafts, obstacle course and dancing for the children. Yet again this was a very enjoyable event Thank you to the Sunday School Society. Dates for Sunday School in May are 8 th May and finishing on 22 nd May.
