3 October 26, 2014 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three NOTES FROM FATHER BOB THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 2014 In the first reading from the Book of Exodus, we hear that God s anger will flare up because the widow and the orphan are treated harshly in society. The people of Israel, through their historical experience of slavery in Egypt, were very conscious of the sufferings of the people who were oppressed and needed liberation. At the same time, as their economic and social status improved in the Promised Land, there was the danger of forgetting their roots and the experience of slavery. The prophets called them back to this experience and reminded them of the experience of being slaves. They were called to extend justice to the poorest in society and especially to those who had no protection or rights. The widow and the orphan were especially marginalized since they had no male figure to protect them. The justice of people was to mirror the justice of God who was always concerned for the poor and weak in society. Love is a very difficult word to understand these days. It has many different meanings. Often it can mean passionate, sexual, erotic, romantic love. Sometime it can mean affection like the love of a dog or a pet. The dog responds with faithfulness and fidelity, usually for reward. It can also refer to friendship between men or women. Love in the gospel means self-giving love concerned totally for the other rather than self. Love of neighbor can be described as creating the conditions, which enable others to be themselves and achieve their full potential. It is a love leading to action, which respects, enhances, sees the best in the others, helps, acts justly and seeks only the good of the other person. Is this sort of love humanly possible? At first it might not seem possible but it can only be lived with God s help and assistance. The gospel calls for continual striving to love like this but it does not expect perfection. It is reassuring that the saints were always very aware of their failing to live as God called. This is always an ideal, for which the Christian can hope. It is often said that love begins at home. There is a truth in this. Learning to respect and love at home can be most difficult, especially when families change; teenagers mature and readjustments have to be made. Love is always concerned for the good of another and this eventually means giving another freedom, which can be painful. Each person has to live his own successes and mistakes. Love allows this to happen and is ready to welcome home. The father of the prodigal son must have suffered much when his son went away. While he welcomed him home, he must have felt pain and joy when he returned. The commandment to love can be very difficult. Love is never satisfied. If love begins at home, then it has to extend outside the home, even to the very margins of society. Who are the weakest and poorest in society? Who are the ones like the orphan and the poor in Jewish society? The asylum-seekers? Those fleeing from their homeland because of persecution? Love demands that we respect them and extend justice to the stranger and foreigner in society. This may need conversion as we overcome prejudice and stereotypes. Welcoming others and speaking up for others will often meet resistance and scorn; faithfulness to the gospel calls for perseverance in witnessing to the truth in love. Faithfulness to the gospel will always be rewarded. ALL SAINTS DAY AND ALL SOULS DAY 2014 I WOULD LIKE TO REMIND EVERYONE THAT ALL SAINTS DAY SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 1, THIS YEAR IS NOT A HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION. MASS ON THIS DAY FOR ALL SAINTS WILL BE THE 8:00 AM REGULAR SATURDAY MORNING MASS ONLY. ALL SOULS DAY IS CELEBRATED ON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 2, THIS YEAR. WE WILL REMEMBER OUR DEAD AT ALL MASSES STARTING WITH A BI-LINGUAL LITURGY ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 1, AT 5:00 P.M. May All Our Faithfully Departed Rest in Peace, Father Bob Pastor

4 Page Four Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 26, 2014 BI-LINGUAL CELEBRATION OF ALL SOULS DAY PARISH COMMEMORATION OF THE DEAD The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed or All Souls Day is celebrated this year on Sunday, November 2, and the 5:00 p.m. anticipated Mass on Saturday evening, November 1. This year, our bi-lingual parish celebration, in which we especially remember all of our faithful departed who were buried from St. Cletus during the past year, will take place at the Saturday evening, 5:00 p.m. Mass. The Mass, celebrated in English and Spanish has become a beautiful tradition here at St. Cletus when we especially invite the families who have celebrated funeral Masses here since last All Souls Day, to join us in remembering their departed loved ones. During the celebration, the names of these beloved dead are read and family members are invited to light a candle in their honor. At the conclusion of the remembrances for these families, anyone who has lost a loved one is also invited to light a candle in their memory. If you have suffered the loss a loved one during the last year, we hope you will join us for this special Mass of healing and remembrance. Throughout the month of November, The Book of the Names of the Dead will be enthroned at the foot of the altar, where names may be added for the faithful departed who will be remembered at all Masses throughout the month. 6 Page Six Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 26, 2014 FOOD PANTRY Thank you to all who continue to support this much needed and appreciated ministry. As you do your grocery shopping this week, here are a couple of things to remember: Most needed items at this time include rice, peanut butter & jelly, canned fruit, meals in a can/box, canned meat, tuna, boxed sides and extras such as cooking oil, juice, coffee and toilet paper. We need to constantly replenish our pantry shelves with staples and extras as our volunteers continue to pack bags for our November 13 monthly food distribution. All in date non-perishables, paper goods, laundry detergent, dish soap, etc. are most appreciated! GIVING TREE Stores are displaying Christmas decorations and advertisements for gift giving will soon be a common sight. As the season of Thanksgiving and the Holidays approach, we Christians are looking for ways to keep the true meaning of the season alive in our families. One way is to take part in our annual Giving Tree Project, which will begin on the weekend of November 15 and 16. Please watch upcoming Canticles for details. Also, if you or anyone you know in our faith community could benefit from this outreach, please let me know. Your request will be confidential. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped assemble the Giving Tree tags last Tuesday. Please check upcoming Canticles for more volunteer opportunities during this season. Your cheerful participation is what drives this awesome outreach. Mary Beth Ford Director of Social Concerns RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY A CARDINAL S CANDOR (PART 2 OF 2) Here are concluding excerpts from Chicago Cardinal Francis George s tale of two churches - the church of God and the church of State - in which he considers the consequences of swimming against the tide of the state religion. Swimming against the tide means limiting one s access to positions of prestige and power in society. It means that those who choose to live by the Catholic faith will not be welcomed as political candidates to national office, will not sit on editorial boards of major newspapers, will not be at home on most university faculties, will not have successful careers as actors and entertainers. Nor will their children, who will also be suspect. Since all public institutions, no matter who owns or operates them, will be agents of the government and conform their activities to the demands of the official religion, the practice of medicine and law will become more difficult for faithful Catholics. It already means in some states that those who run businesses must conform their activities to the official religion or be fined, as Christians and Jews are fined for their religion in countries governed by sharia law. Who among us can deny that this tale has a troubling basis in current reality? Yet the Cardinal assures there are some who still do not want their beloved country to transform into a fake church. He is surely right but those faithful must now stand and speak. The protection of life depends on them.

7 October 26, 2014 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Seven REMINDER! PLEASE... RETURN FILLED BABY BOTTLES TO CHURCH - NOVEMBER 1-2 Next weekend our volunteers will be in the Narthex of the church before and after the Masses to collect the baby bottles that were passed out two weeks ago. The money we collect will be given to Women s Care Center of La Grange (47th South 6th Ave, Suite 1, La Grange 60525, (708) , womenscarecenter@core.com). This center is available to help women and families in our neighborhood. It is dedicated to serving the community with care and compassion reaching clients with heart-to-heart counseling, free pregnancy tests and ultrasound referrals, fertility awareness and abstinence education plus material assistance and medical and housing referrals. This allows parents in our area who are struggling, to better be able to accept their baby as a gift, rather than a burden. If you are blessed with abundance, some of the costs that you could help the center pay are: $10.00 for a clinic quality pregnancy test; $25.00 for a large package of diapers; $35.00 for a large can of baby formula; $50.00 for a baby layette for a newborn; $70.00 for an ultrasound; $ to offset some of the cost of the Google ad campaign that we use to reach women who need help. If you cannot give much, give what you can! If you didn t get a bottle, any donation is welcome even without the bottle. If you wish to give a check, please make it payable to Women s Care Center of La Grange. The more money we collect, the more mothers and families we can help. The center receives no governmental assistance nor are they supported with church money. Literally, YOU give them the money they need to operate and help these women and their families who CHOOSE LIFE for their babies. Thank you for being a lifesaver! Wayne & Marianne Hamilton Saint Cletus Parish Committee for Respect Life Activities Dear St. Cletus Parishioners, It was a joy for me to be present at the Sunday Liturgies the weekend of September 13-14, My message to all of you was one of sharing the joy of the Good News with the itinerant people of the circus community. I am grateful for your hospitality during my visit, for the opportunity to meet so many new friends, and for your generosity in the second collection. I returned to the circus and I shared with them my experience in your Catholic community. The donation funds are used solely for reaching out to the itinerant community of circus personnel with a presence which witnesses to discipleship of Jesus Christ. Religious instruction is one of the key elements of this ministry coupled with the training and supervision of lay leadership on the circuses which results in the empowerment of Christian community. Sincerely, Sr. Dorothy Fabritze, MSC WORD OF LIFE Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed you. -Jeremiah 1: CCD) Used with permission Daylight Savings Time ends Sunday, November 2. Clocks go back one hour on Saturday (11-2) /early Sunday morning). Morning will be lighter but will grow dark earlier.

8 Page Eight Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 26, 2014 DAY OF THE SPIRIT Be reassured you were not experiencing the early tremors of an autumn earthquake. It was the power of the Holy Spirit moving through Morrissey Hall touching the lives of our 8 th grade Confirmation candidates. Seventy-five students from our school and Religious Ed. programs participated in a day long retreat filled with activities, a film, discussions, presentation, reflection time, and the celebration of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. Catechists, a teacher, and Moms generously served as facilitators of small groups of candidates and also helped serve breakfast snacks and lunch. We were pleased to have Fr. Ken direct the retreat day. This day is another step in the candidates preparation process. We ask that you take a name or two out of the baskets that will be in church this weekend and remember them in prayer.
