GOD S WORD TODAY During the past few years we have seen the tremendous destruction wrought by tsunamis and hurricanes. Surging water has a destructive power sometimes beyond imagining. We can understand why the disciples most of whom were experienced fishermen feared for their lives when the squall came up and waves began to break over the boat. This story, recounted in today s Gospel, can inspire us to turn to the Lord when we are faced with those things that bring fear and desperation into our own lives. Let us not be afraid to ask God to come to our aid, especially when the storms of worry, fear, and anxiety begin to crash over our own lives. From Saint Margaret Sunday Missal, copyright J. S. 3 June 21, 2015 Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three NOTES FROM FATHER BOB TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 2015 We all know that dogs can smell fear. There are even some people who are of the opinion that computers and all things technical can smell fear. Fear is one of the essential emotions that we are lucky enough to be able to experience. We are not complimenting people when we say of them, they have no sense of danger. By making that judgment about people we are noting that there is something important lacking in them. Some people seem to be more in tune with situations of imminent danger than others. When danger surrounds us, our natural resources kick in; we act instinctively and this helps preserve us from whatever the danger might be. I guess the only thing worse than never experiencing fear, is living in a state of perpetual fear. The disciples were right to be alarmed at the sudden change in weather. All too often they would have seen fellow fishermen caught unawares or catapulted into life-threatening situations. Their alarm is heightened by the fact that Jesus is blissfully unaware and is lying sound asleep. It is obvious from the disciples decision to waken Jesus that they expect him to do something. It is obvious that they don t know quite what that something might be. Perhaps they just want another pair of hands to bail out the incoming water, or perhaps they just want the reassurance of his calming presence. From the way they react after the event, we can be reasonably sure that the disciples were not expecting Jesus to take the fantastic action that he did. Who can this be? Even the wind and the sea obey him. This incident happens near the beginning of Jesus ministry and the poor disciples obviously haven t really worked out who Jesus is and what he is about. If the disciples had believed at that point that Jesus was truly the messiah, then there would have been no need for the fear they experienced and there certainly would have been no lack of faith. The disciples continue to struggle with Jesus identity. They don t doubt his special charisms or they would not have left all to follow him, but Jesus is forever surprising them. He constantly leaves them awe-struck; he even throws them into confusion. Now they are only too aware that their master has power, even over nature. When disaster strikes and danger is close by, many people, who wouldn t normally turn to prayer, find themselves on their knees. And it s interesting to note how many people bless themselves when their plane is taking off. Those of us who do try to pray regularly should not stand in judgment of such people: it is probable that our own prayer becomes more intense in such situations. Their responses may well be signs that deep down these people do realize that Jesus is Lord and Savior and that he is close to them. The sadness is that they and we often fail to learn the lessons from such experiences. When the danger is gone and the panic is over, it is all too easy to slip back into a life where Jesus plays only a minor part. If we only see Jesus as Lord and Savior in time of trouble then we are missing out on knowing him and being in a relationship with him. Surely today is a good time for us to review how we relate to Jesus and ask ourselves, Who is this person? Even the wind and the sea obey him. Any relationship depends on openness between the two parties. Are we open to being in relationship with the Lord? If we are then we will make sure that there is some time in our day for quiet and reflection, some time that is prayer time. When we make space in our lives for this time then we will find that our lives are less hectic, a lot of our petty fears will be calmed, our relationship with Jesus will be deepened and our experience of his love will be real. Only by getting to know Jesus, can we be ready to answer the question when asked by other people, Who is this person? Blessings Always, Father Bob Clark Pastor

People who know Lake Superior respect its power and watch out for its many moods. Sunken ships and boats crushed into kindling are testimonies to what the lake can do. The readings of this Sunday evoke our memories of the lake, of the mighty Mississippi River, or of the ocean itself. Who but God can control these mighty waters and set limits to their advance? The lake described in today s Gospel was a body of water subject to sudden storms and churned into dangerous waves by terrible winds. But these mighty agents are subject to God. The sailor and the fisher all respect the water. Even more, they respect the awesome power of the Maker of wind and sea. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 6 Page Six Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 21, 2015 It s not too late to sign your children up for the Religious Education year! Registration forms can be found online at the parish website ( stcletusparish.com/ministries/religious-education/re/) or in the Religious Education Office or the Parish Rectory. It is vital to our planning process that all children are registered by July 1, 2015 so that we can ensure we have the right number of Catechists, books and materials to accommodate each child. St. Cletus offers religious education classes for children in Grades 1-8, as well as preschool aged children (3 yrs K). You must be a registered parishioner to enroll your child in our program. If you need to register in the parish, please contact the Rectory at (708) If you are new to the program, please bring a copy of your child s baptismal certificate when you register (unless they were baptized at St. Cletus). Every year of religious education builds on the previous year. Please make every attempt to have your child attend each year, like they do in their primary school. Sacramental Preparation is a two year process, with children in Second Grade receiving the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist (after completing 1 st and 2 nd Grade) and children in Eighth Grade receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation (after completing 7 th and 8 th Grade). Older children in need of the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist will attend special classes. Grades 1-6 meet on Sundays (9:15-10:45 a.m.) or on Mondays (6-7:30 p.m.). Grades 7-8 meet on Sundays (9:15-10:45 a.m.) Early Childhood Program (3yrs K) meet on Sundays (9:30-10:30 a.m.) Please be sure to register your child/ren now! Boldly go where others have gone before, and help pass on the Good News of Jesus Christ and our Catholic Faith! This fall, over 400 children and teens, preschool through 8 th Grade, will sign up to learn more about Jesus and our Catholic faith. At this time, we don t have enough Catechists to teach them. You can help by becoming a Catechist for our Religious Education ministry. As you nurture the faith of our young, you will be surprised at how much you learn and grow in your own faith! As one long-time Catechist put it, I learn so much from the children! We provide you with training, materials, lesson plans, resources and support. Classes begin on September 20 and 21. We have openings for Sunday morning classes and Monday evening classes. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact either Paulette Bolton (pbolton@stcletusparish.com) or Barb Campbell (bcampbell@stcletusparish.com) in the Religious Education Office (708) Please join us in this fun, engaging and rewarding ministry! The Council of Trent began a reform of the liturgy that put an end to old practices and set many of our present practices in place. For the first time, engaged people were absolutely required to appear before their parish priest, and to exchange consent in his presence along with two witnesses. To this day, Catholics are obliged to this form, namely: to marry another Catholic in the presence of a priest (or deacon) and two witnesses, unless dispensed from the law. The Council really didn t forbid customs and ceremonies that added life to the celebration, but the mood of the times was dark and somewhat austere. Practices like the blessing of the marriage bed or using a canopy for the nuptial blessing started to fade away, as did the custom of bringing the presents for the couple to the church and the addition of fiddlers and jugglers to the procession. The Council of Trent tried to preserve local customs, but the longterm effect was to standardize celebrations everywhere in the world. GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY MASS The Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass will be held on Sunday, August 30, at 2:45 p.m. at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 North State Street, Chicago.
