Today s Gospel tells the story of the preparation of the place where Jesus and his disciples were to eat the Last Supper. During that meal, the new covenant in Christ s blood was established as an everlasting covenant that we celebrate to this day. Today is a good day to ask ourselves just how intentional we are when preparing to celebrate the Mass. All too often, our coming to this place becomes routine and the Mass seems to pass us by. What an opportunity we miss when this happens! When we celebrate the Eucharist, we are joined to Christ, proclaiming and participating in his death and sharing in the promise of his new life. The gift of today s solemnity gives us the chance to re-examine our own preparedness for Mass. As today s Gospel is proclaimed, let us remember that it is at the table of the Eucharist that we can truly find transformation. Edgar s seven year term with us here at St. Cletus Parish is coming to an end. Fr. Edgar will begin his new assignment on July 1, at Christ the King Parish in Chicago. To show our appreciation we will celebrate his years with us at a thank you celebration to be held on Sunday, June 28, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. (Noon) under the tent in front of school. Please come and thank him for his priestly ministry and wish him well at his new assignment.

3 June 7, 2015 Feast of Corpus Christi Page Three NOTES FROM FATHER BOB FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI 2015 People cannot match God for faithfulness; the Covenant was constantly breached. And so Jesus came, God s own Son. The Law became a person, obedience became a relational response to a person, and the rule became love. The writer of the letter to the Hebrews deliberately describes the work of Christ as renewing, even replacing the old Covenant between God and people. The New Covenant is the person of Christ. This brings us to consider the first day of Unleavened Bread. God s new covenant with people has gradually unfolded in the person and teaching of Christ. He is revealed as Savior in his ministry of healing, teaching and forgiving. But the old Covenant is still in place, and people are still bound by the Law. Jesus re-states the Law, showing its heart of love. He points out that the two greatest commandments are loving God and loving neighbor, and lives these commandments to the full. He spends his final hours on earth fulfilling, in his obedience, the Old Covenant, and putting in its place the New. Only he could fulfill the demands of the Law perfectly, and so only he could bring the New Covenant into being. And only his blood could seal it. In the upper room, Jesus took bread and wine and used them to announce his own death, and the salvation it would bring. Ever after, bread and wine, broken and poured out in his memory, would be a sign of the New Covenant between God and his people. Christ made the one, perfect offering to the Father, and enables us to share in that offering. We have nothing else to offer the Father; we could have nothing else to offer. In the Eucharist we associate ourselves with the ultimate offering, Christ himself. But the Eucharist is not a morbid proclamation of the sacrifice of Christ; it is a celebration of a sacrifice unto death, which brought and brings only life. The Law alone was not enough we cannot relate to law. But when Christ himself became the sign of the Covenant, we entered into a personal, dynamic relationship with him who is our salvation. In our Eucharist, bread and wine are signs of the New Covenant. They are signs of Christ who is the Covenant, and signs of the blood by which he sealed the Covenant. This has profound implications for us who gather around the table of the Lord to share this bread and wine. We are not people under the obligation of law; rather, we are people in a covenant relationship with God. This means that external obedience is of no importance. Obedience of the heart is what is crucial. Our commitment to the commandments of love will be manifest in our lives, and so our behavior is renewed from the inside to the outside. Our sharing the bread and wine is a celebration and a demonstration that we are not individuals with private contracts with God, but we are a people who share a Covenant with God. Our living of the Covenant is not private, but social; it is something we do together, with each other. We become what we celebrate: the Body of Christ, the presence of Christ in the world, and we pour out our lives in service of God and of our neighbor. An enthusiastic THANK-YOU! to all who made contributions for this Thursday s monthly distribution. As we restock our shelves, our most needed items at this time include canned/powdered milk, dry pinto beans, juice, toothpaste and paper towels. Traditionally our food donations drop off during the summer. However, the need does not. Please continue to remember us when you do your grocery shopping. FOOD PANTRY VOLUNTEER REMINDERS AND REQUEST: Those who volunteered to help at the Tuesday, June 9 mobile pantry, sponsored by Lyons Township and the Greater Chicago Food Depository should meet in the Church/Parking Lot. Times are: 2:30 p.m. to unpack food from pallets, bag produce, etc.; 3:30-5:30 p.m., to help in Distribution; 5:30-6:30 p.m., clean up. Those students who volunteered to help set up for the Thursday, June 11 distribution, will meet in the Church narthex at 1:00 PM. We will be finished with set-up around 1:45 PM. We re counting on you, and look forward to seeing you at 1:00 PM. We are also in need of more student volunteers (grades 7-12), and/or parents to help at 1:00 p.m. We need a few able-bodied volunteers (adults or teens) to help us out as bag carriers at our monthly evening distributions, especially in the summer months. As the school year is coming to a close, don t forget to register your child for Religious Education Classes next year! Register your children NOW for the academic year. Registration forms can be found online at stcletusparish.com under the Religious Education tab, or in the Religious Education Office or Parish Rectory. St. Cletus offers religious education classes for children in Grades 1-8, as well as for preschool aged children (3- K) in our Early Childhood Program. Please note that Sacramental Preparation is a two-year process. This applies to the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist (1 st and 2 nd Grades), as well as Confirmation (7 th and 8 th Grades). Older children in need of sacraments may attend special classes to prepare them for the reception of the sacraments. For your convenience, we offer classes on Sunday and Monday for children in Grades 1-6. 10 Page Ten Feast of Corpus Christi June 7, 2015 Hope Out of Darkness SERVICE OUTING On Friday, May 1, two St. Cletus teens responded to a need at Eve Assisted Living in Hinsdale by organizing a small group of classmates to perform music for the residents. Kelly Czarny and Caroline Spitkovsky joined efforts to recruit fellow bandmates and organized a small program to entertain the residents through a variety of music. The residents thoroughly enjoyed it, and the teens graciously and selflessly shared their talents in a way that brought much joy to others. Thank you!! I was a stranger and you welcomed me.. Mark 14:23 Jesus, the perfect steward, gave thanks, just before He gave Himself to us completely for our salvation. He offers us the chance to drink from His cup. In the Eucharist, we meet Christ personally and, if we listen to Him, we know what drinking from His cup means for each of us. Often, it means our own sacrifice giving up some of our time, talent and treasure to do His work on earth. ST.
