3 Page 3 Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King November 22, 2015 Notes from Fr. Bob... FEAST OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST THE KING Today we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King and the end of our liturgical year. I do not know about you, but it is hard for me to believe that another year has come and gone. I have heard that it is a sign of getting older when you start to notice that more and more time seems to just fly by. Maybe it is a sign that, through age, wisdom helps us to recognize that time in this world is relatively short for all of us. The readings today remind us that in the end Christ will return with great power and glory and we will stand before the throne of justice. We do not know the day or the hour. The question for you and I as we conclude this liturgical year is if the Lord returned today at this hour would he find us ready? Have we used this time well? Have we been faith followers of His Gospel message? Have we been instruments of His peace? Have we truly loved one another? Would He recognize Himself in us? As we celebrate this great feast and conclude this liturgical year let us pray that we, a followers of Christ, live each minute and each hour as if it were our last. Let us recommit ourselves this minute, this hour, this day, this new liturgical year to truly be Christ to one another. Indeed Christ is truly their King who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen. THANKSGIVING 2015 Thank you for the prayers and support that all St. Cletus parishioners provide to our parish. I hope you will join us on Thursday, November 26th at 9:00 a.m. for our Thanksgiving Day Liturgy. Fr. Bob Clark A MESSAGE FROM ST. CLETUS SCHOOL In Thanksgiving we acknowledge and appreciate all of our school and parish families: St. Cletus parents and guardians, who are committed to developing their children's spiritual growth and academic excellence; St. Cletus students who attend our school, acquire healthy study habits, and work hard each day to cultivate their faith, discover their gifts, and expand their knowledge; St. Cletus enrolled families, financial supporters, and contributing benefactors who give so generously to our school; and St. Cletus School volunteers who kindly assist our teachers and staff and manage a variety of extracurricular programs for our students' enjoyment and personal growth. Kindergarteners Count their Blessings Our kindergarteners are counting their blessings this Thanksgiving. In class, each child is writing a blessing or something he/she is thankful for on a feather. These feathers are being added to our kindergarten turkey. The students are excited to watch the birds plumage grow as we approach the holiday. Tackling Tough Subjects Through Books Our 6th-graders have completed their unit on the novel, Wonder. Hopefully the lessons in choosing kind will continue to guide everyone. This novel was well-received by all and an early highlight to this school year. As a treat for all of their hard work, students are looking forward to reading, The Julian s Chapter. This short story centers on the life of the bully from Wonder and students gain perspective as they discover insight into this character. Tyler s Legacy St. Cletus graduate Michael Fanta chose to collect items for the Treasure Chest Foundation as part of his Eagle Project. The collection boxes were stationed around the community to collect items for children that are fighting cancer. The boxes were filled with hats, scarves, ear buds, socks, books, DVDs, ball caps, toys, and gift cards. A number of current students that are Boy Scouts helped sort and present the items to the very grateful Treasure Chest Foundation.

8 November 22, 2015 Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King Page 8 Religious Education VISUALIZING THE POWER OF GOD S FORGIVENESS The children in RE have been preparing for Reconciliation which grades 3-8 will celebrate on Nov. 30th, as we enter the season of Advent. The 2 nd graders and Special Sacraments class have also been learning about the power of God s forgiveness in our lives. A couple of activities were used to visually demonstrate this truth. The full jug/ empty jug activity provided children the experience of the feeling we have when we carry sin around with us a heaviness that weighs us down. The empty jug represented the light feeling we have after receiving the sacrament of Reconciliation. Using a banana, the children saw that after eating a few bites and trying to wrap it up to save it for later, it s appearance changed and did not look the same. When we sin, we peel away a part of ourselves and it is difficult to fix it so that it looks the same as before. It is when God is involved, that our sins are forgiven and our original beauty is restored and we are made new again. It is what Jesus does for us in the sacrament of Reconciliation. THANKSGIVING SPIRIT In the spirit of Thanksgiving, many of our 3 rd and 4 th graders made cards offering prayers, good wishes, and even a few jokes to bring a smile to our homebound and nursing home parishioners. Parents of children receiving Reconciliation for the first time attended a meeting with presentations by Fr. Ken and Fr. Lorenzo. The importance of parental example and involvement in their children s preparation and participation of all the sacraments was emphasized. Student volunteers in the junior high of both the school and RE will be changing the missalettes in church, Friday, Nov. 27 th in anticipation of the new liturgical year which begins on the First Sunday of Advent vigil, Nov. 28 th and Nov. 29 th. As we will entering cycle C of the gospels, we will be listening to the Gospel of Luke, who is concerned with expressing the mercy and compassion of Jesus, the importance of prayer, and the role of a disciple as a follower of Jesus. These themes are especially fitting as Pope Francis has declared this new year as the Year of Mercy. Please look for on-going observances and information in the Canticle. You'll also learn how to find employee referrals using two virtually unknown free LinkedIn features. Interestingly, Bob landed his current position at Electro-Motive Diesel through several management referrals from employees he helped place there and who he had previously worked with at another company. Lesson learned - more people are landing jobs today through employee referrals compared to just a few years ago. For more detailed career and biography information about Bob, go to This meeting is open to everyone and there is no cost to attend. We look forward to seeing you in Room 201. SERVICE OPPORTUNITY AARP TAX-AIDE PROGRAM Are you looking for a rewarding opportunity to make a difference in your community? The AARP Tax-Aide Program is now seeking volunteers for the upcoming 2016 tax filing season. To volunteer, it is not necessary for you to be an AARP member or to have a tax or accounting background you just need a desire to help. However, some knowledge of your own personal tax matters is very helpful. All returns are prepared on computers; thus, volunteers should be somewhat computer literate. Training classes will be held in January This income tax preparation and assistance is offered to low and middle income individuals, with special attention to those 60 years and older. To volunteer, visit the aarp.org/taxaide website or contact parishioner, John Wagner, at for further details. CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT In his address at Madison Square Garden, Pope Francis told us, In big cities...so many faces pass by unnoticed because they have no right to be there.they are the foreigners, the children who go without schooling, those deprived of medical insurance, the homeless, the forgotten elderly. These people stand at the edges of our great avenues, in our streets, in deafening anonymity. They become part of an urban landscape which is more and more taken for granted, in our eyes, and especially in our hearts. Pope Francis calls us to change this reality for our marginalized brothers and sisters, who cannot live in dignity when they are ignored by society and the law. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) seeks to provide everyone a place at the table by promoting a more just society where all can participate. We fund organizations in your neighborhood that work to enable the poor to have a voice in their communities. As our collection weekend comes to a close, we extend our deepest gratitude to you and your families for all of your generous donations. On behalf of CCHD and all of the remarkable grantees, we send many thanks and blessings to you and your loved ones during this holiday season. With our continual collaboration and efforts, we become one step closer to building a better Chicago.
