3 July 20, 2014 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three NOTES FROM FATHER BOB SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 2014 I don t feel that you have understood me. These words capture the difficulty we have in communicating to one another. It can be very hard at times to express our true feelings and experience to another person, sometimes even to ourselves. James and Mary had been experiencing difficulties in their marriage. They did not seem to understand one another any more. Little irritations had begun to become major stumbling blocks in their relationship. Jane and her daughter were no longer able to talk to one another. They just didn t seem to understand each other any more. Maybe a long heart-to-heart talk would sort it out. At times like this, people turn to a counselor or seek advice from someone experienced in communication. If communicating with one another can be difficult, how easy is it to communicate with God? John says his prayers but sometimes he feels that they are only words and do not seem to express his deepest self. St. Paul is aware of the difficulty of prayer and the struggle of putting into words the deepest desires of the heart. However, this is not a cause of despair for him; rather it is an opportunity to trust in God. The Spirit comes to help us in our weakness. Even when we think our prayer is inadequate and the words are not properly expressed, God knows what we want and grace perfects our human attempts. When the words are right, we gain insight into our need; perhaps this is more for our benefit than God s. Growth in the spiritual life is like learning a new language. Prayer changes with age and maturity. As children, we learned prayers like the Our Father and Hail Mary. These words can become the starting point for a lifetime of reflection. The words of the Our Father sum up all the petitions of prayer. When we pray Our Father, we begin by recognizing that we are one human family, brothers and sisters in Christ who can address a common Father. Yet we each have a different experience associated with the word father. Different meanings follow. Hopefully many have experienced a loving relationship with their father. Some have not been so fortunate and a few perhaps experienced violence or neglect from a father-figure. The scriptures remind us that each person s understanding of father is very limited. God the Father in the scriptures is revealed as one who is like a shepherd who seeks out the lost sheep, even if it is only one out of a hundred. The father is like an elderly man who runs out to welcome home his son who had left home and went off to see the world, fell upon hard times, spent all his money and returned home penniless. There is no word of recrimination, I knew this would happen to you, you should have listened to me, but rather his words announce that there will be a party. Sometimes it is difficult to articulate our deepest needs and the needs of others. God asks only that we do our best and recognize our dependence. Begin by praying in whatever way you want, God understands. Honesty is important. We might be afraid to tell God that we are angry or hurt. Only when we do this are we honest in prayer. By naming these feelings before God, we grow in the ability to pray. God desires that each person will find his or her way back to the Father. God is waiting to embrace each person. It is never too late to repent. Jesus promised everlasting life to the repentant thief who asked for mercy; Today you will be with me in paradise. This promise is there for each person. Jesus warns against the premature judgment of others and advises that judgment should be left to God. This scene does not sit easily in contemporary society. While it may be necessary to send some people to prison as a result of crime, the gospel is a reminder that one of the aims of the criminal justice system is rehabilitation by repentance and conversion. Christians are reminded of this fact in the words of the Our Father : forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. This is difficult; we pray for the capacity to do so. Extraordinary Blessings during Ordinary Time, Father Bob Pastor

4 Page Four Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 20, 2014 St. Cletus Parish Welcomes Fabián Morelos, Jr., son of Fabían Morelos & María Abrego Isaac Alexander Murillo Rico, son of Isidro Murillo & Diana Rico Yamileth Murillo, daughter of Isidro Murillo & Diana Rico to the Catholic Faith through the Sacrament of Baptism. DO Do what you can, with what you have, where you are. -Theodore Roosevelt WORD OF LIFE We are confident that we serve a God of life, of hope and mercy. We know that all human life is a gift from God, a gift that God charges us to protect. To be worthy of being called his disciples, Jesus urges us to love others as he has loved us (Jn 13:34-35). Our response then, to a culture in which hostility towards others is commonplace, in which killing is often considered a legitimate solution to social problems, is to both live and proclaim a gospel of life, hope and mercy. Life Matters: A catholic Response to the Death Penalty 2013Respect Life Program TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Charlemagne, crowned Holy Roman Emperor on Christmas Day, 800, had a major interest in shaping the worship life of the church, and began a long period of reform and regulation. We owe many confirmation policies and practices to his rule. A baptized person was required to be confirmed as soon as the bishop s presence made it possible. Priests were expected to do their best in seeing to it that a newly-baptized child received the Eucharist. One twelfth-century ritual insists that if the child is not yet capable of eating or drinking, then the priest might give him or her some of the Precious Blood on a leaf or a finger. Despite the best efforts of the Empire to hold liturgical life together, the rules were not always lived out with great beauty. St. Richard of Chichester of thirteenth-century England, for example, was canonized for his holy life as a bishop. One of the remarkable signs of his sanctity was his willingness to climb down from his horse to confirm merely baptized layfolk who crossed his path! This praiseworthy practice points a finger of blame at less zealous bishops, whose casual attitudes revealed a sacrament in need of rescue. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

8 Page Eight Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 20, 2014 FOOD PANTRY UPDATE We are continuing to experience locally what pantries across the country are finding a rise in the number of new faces of people, who find they need our services. Your donations, along with those from various area churches and organizations, are what keep us going. Thank you for your continuing generosity! It s not necessary to bring every item we need each week (although we will graciously and gratefully accept them!), but if everyone could just bring one or two items, it would help us greatly. Our shelves are very low after our July 10 distribution. Most needed items at this time: tuna, jelly, crackers, snacks, baking mixes, pancake mix, syrup, salad dressings, condiments, boxed potatoes and canned meals. Please mark your calendar for our Share the Wealth distribution of fresh garden produce, which will take place at our August 14 monthly food distribution. Donations need to be dropped off in Morrissey Hall Lobby in the school on that day, between 4:45-5:45 p.m. It is important to remember that we can accept such donations only at this time, because of our storage and distribution limitations. Be sure to read this week s Canticle insert about Jack Dahill s Eagle Project, which details needed school supplies for our August 14 distribution.
