Kids Corner by Ann van der Merwe The Living Word Have you ever heard the Bible called the Living Word? No, the Bible is not going to stand up and walk around. But the Bible is alive. When we read about people like David and Daniel, we aren t just reading Old Testament stories. We are learning about their experience of God and we can relate to it. When we read the words of Jesus, we aren t just reading what he wanted to share with people living centuries ago. We are hearing a message meant for us, too. In fact, the Bible is one of the best ways to hear God s voice. So, open your Bible and have a listen. God has something special to say to you every single time. 2 Soul Food: A Word from Randy Can You Hear Me Now? Father Harvey Schaller was an old priest who would make regular visits to the Catholic patients at Bethesda North Hospital. He was a devout gentlemen, who well into his nineties cherished the ministry of Word and Sacrament. As his health was failing, I used to visit him regularly and would purposely ask him the same question each time, Father Schaller, what is the most important lesson you ve learned in all of your years of ministry? Without hesitation, he would reply, Listening to God. When most people pray, he would say, they do all the talking! And when does God speak, then most people just do what they please anyway. I witnessed the truth of this in a recent conversation with a person who shared with me that he and God had an understanding. He told God what he would and wouldn t do and was sure God was okay with it. When I asked how he knew that God had spoken, he looked at me with noticeable confusion. How does God speak to us? For too many years, the established church s traditions were taken as gospel. That is, until Martin Luther, a German monk and devout student of the Bible had his eyes opened to the life of faith and holiness taught in the Scriptures. Feeling compelled to speak out on behalf of his parishioners, he penned the famous 95 Theses and nailed them to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany. His intent was to invite debate on the essentials of the Christian faith and challenge the abusive practices of the church, hoping for reform. With each obstacle, God spoke into his life through his readings and he became more convinced that the Bible is indeed the ultimate authority for faith and life. Like many of you, I have heard the still small voice of God many times while reading the Bible or listening to a message or song based entirely on the Word of God. As Pastor Peter often says, it s life changing. Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it.... Revelation 1:3 Sermon Notes: The Bible Alone Coming Alongside Coming Alongside is inviting the ladies of the church to join us for lunch and fellowship on Tuesday, October 17, at noon for a luncheon at Cobblestone Café in Waynesville.
