3 All children are welcome here, but we know that a fussy baby is much louder to a parent s ears than to any of ours. If you have need: We have a nursery down the main stairs and to the left. It is staffed with volunteers, who will gladly care for any little ones who show up at the beginning of the service. If there are none, the volunteers will come up to the sanctuary, the nursery room will remain available. There is also a diaper change station in the Nursery and in both downstairs restrooms. We have a speaker in the narthex so that you DIY soothers can listen while you walk the little ones around. Except on communion Sundays, there is Children's church for ages 4 through grade 2. When there is Children's church, children will be dismissed after the Children's Time part of the service. Worship Service Notes ANNOUNCEMENTS FRIENDS WHO LUNCH The Friends Who Lunch will meet together this Tuesday, September 11 th, with a luncheon at Outback Steakhouse in La Plata. They will meet there at 12:00 noon. Please plan to join us for good food and great fellowship. There is a sign-up sheet in the narthex. For further information call the church office. FUNNEL CAKES AT THE FAIR Starting this Thursday, September 14 th, Good Samaritan will again be selling funnel cakes at the Charles County Fair. We will need volunteers to help with this important fundraising event from the set up on Thursday morning through the break down on Monday morning. There are sign-up sheets in the Narthex. Any questions can be directed to Bill Koennel or Alicia Barefoot. Come join the fun! **Thank you to everyone that has signed up to help with the funnel cakes. We still need several volunteers for Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and the break down on Monday to make this another successful year! This year we will also be selling cans of soda instead of the typical bottles. As a way to make a few more fundraising dollars we will accept any donations of Coke, Diet Coke, and Sprite (preferably in cases and these are the only types of soda that we will be selling). If you have a soda donation just drop it off in the narthex coat closet and if you have any questions, please call the church office or Bill Koennel.
4 FIRST READING JAMES 2: 1-10 My brothers and sisters, do you with your acts of favoritism really believe in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ? 2 For if a person with gold rings and in fine clothes comes into your assembly, and if a poor person in dirty clothes also comes in, 3 and if you take notice of the one wearing the fine clothes and say, Have a seat here, please, while to the one who is poor you say, Stand there, or, Sit at my feet, 4 have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? 5 Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters. Has not God chosen the poor in the world to be rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him? 6 But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who oppress you? Is it not they who drag you into court? 7 Is it not they who blaspheme the excellent name that was invoked over you? 8 You do well if you really fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 9 But if you show partiality, you commit sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. SECOND READING MARK 7: From there he set out and went away to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know he was there. Yet he could not escape notice, 25 but a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him, and she came and bowed down at his feet. 26 Now the woman was a Gentile, of Syrophoenician origin. She begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. 27 He said to her, Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children s food and throw it to the dogs. 28 But she answered him, Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the children s crumbs. 29 Then he said to her, For saying that, you may go the demon has left your daughter. 30 So she went home, found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone. 31 Then he returned from the region of Tyre, and went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. 32 They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they begged him to lay his hand on him. 33 He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue. 34 Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. 35 And immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. 36 Then Jesus ordered them to tell no one; but the more he ordered them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. 37 They were astounded beyond measure, saying, He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.
5 We are pleased that you have chosen to worship with us today. There are fellowship pads at the end of the row, please pass them, and sign them, so that you can learn the names of those who are sitting near you and so that they can know yours as well. Provide other information as desired. After the service, talk to old friends and meet some new ones. We have snacks and coffee downstairs. We have a platform lift for anyone who doesn t do well with stairs, see an usher for assistance. Please be mindful that as we prepare for worship we are entering sacred space and sacred time. Please turn off cell phones and refrain from using other electronic media. The flowers on the Retable this morning are in loving memory of Sally Brandt s father. Today's Volunteers: Greeters: Anne Creveling (10:15); Acolyte: Caitlyn Gaskill; Ushers: Anne Creveling and Paul Hilliard (10:15); Readers: Ted Roorda and Heather Kriebel (10:15); Nursery Volunteers: Jackie Flora and Penny Kriebel; Coffee Hour: Ron and Lou Ann Gallegos TODAY Worship Service at 8:00 a.m. Sunday School at 9:00 a.m. Worship Service at 10:15 a.m. Safe Nights Steering Committee Meeting After Service Mon.
