It s a simple idea, but a difficult one to believe. Ever since the early church began, people have been questioning whether Jesus really died and came back to life. Some people have said he wasn t dead when they took him down from the cross. Other people have said that his body was stolen in a conspiracy to create the illusion that he rose from the dead. These ideas have both been disproven, but people still have trouble believing that the story of the resurrection is true. But it is true. It s true because it is the only explanation that makes sense. It is the only explanation that fits with Jesus own words. It is the only explanation that fulfills the prophecies of the Old Testament. It is the only explanation that gives us hope. Ellen Albright and Lynn Brooke Flowers This Morning are Given by Jo, Mike, Cathy, Becky, Debbie and family in loving memory of Willard Snider. 2 Soul Food: A Word from Peter The False Summit I have fought the good fi ght. I have fi nished the race. I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness. - 2 Timothy 4:7-8 Many years ago I climbed Mt. Rainier with a group of friends. It was, by far, the hardest thing I have ever done. Gasping for breath and battling altitude sickness, we made our way through ice and snow to an altitude of 14,400 feet. Several times, it seemed like we were nearing the summit. However, our guide would shatter that illusion and bring us back to reality. That is not the top of the mountain, he would announce. That is a false summit. When we set out to follow Jesus, it s like climbing a mountain. The journey is diffi cult. It requires tremendous effort and endurance. Sometimes, we imagine that we ve reached our goal and all we want is to stop and take life easy. However, our journey will not end until we die and are resurrected. That is our goal and destination. Anything else is a false summit. As long as life endures, we must take up our cross and follow where Jesus leads! Sermon Notes: _ Tom Ferris Retiring There will be a reception for organist Tom Ferris immediately following the 8:45 a.m. service in the Narthex. If you would like to show your appreciation to Tom for his many years of wonderful music, simply write a check directly to Tom Ferris or use an offering envelope and mark it Tom Ferris, and place it in the offering plate. We will collect gifts for Tom through today. Golf Tournament and Love Offering Our annual golf tournament on October 6 raised $3,100 to help construct the third phase of the school we are building in Kenya, East Africa. Also, our special love offering on Sunday, Sept. 16 raised $3,500 to support the ministry of Pastor Steven Khoury in the Holy Land. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to these mission projects! Next Year in Jerusalem! It s an old Jewish saying, but in 2019, it will apply to the LPC Holy Land Tour group! If you are at all interested in being part of this amazing experience, come to the meeting TODAY at 6:30 p.m. in Room 102. We will be reviewing three proposals we ve received from tour companies, deciding which we will accept, determining our target number for the group, and arranging for any necessary deposit to confi rm the tour we select. Retirement Party Honoring Chaplain (Colonel) Randy Fannin You are invited to attend the Army retirement party for Chaplain (Colonel) Randy Fannin on Saturday, November 10 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Ark. Please RSVP by November 1 to Joy Seick at joyfannin@yahoo.com if you plan to attend. Volunteers Needed We are looking for some folks to help in the Church Offi ce. But the truth is, we are half-asleep, unaware of the urgency of your call. So often, we are heedless of your return, ignorant of the pressing need to make our time count. We walk absentmindedly through our days, focused on our own concerns, deluded into thinking that we are in control. Foolishly, we tell ourselves that there is plenty of time to deal with you later. Forgive us, LORD. Remind us again that your Kingdom will not wait, and the time for salvation is now. By your Spirit, awaken us to your call on our lives. With eager hearts, may we hear your voice and obey. Give us faith and courage to follow where you lead. By your grace, enable us to live in such a way that others might see Jesus in our lives. We pray in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, AMEN. Assurance of Pardon * Response Because He Lives God sent his Son, they called him Jesus He came to love, heal and forgive, He lived and died to buy my pardon; An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives. Because he lives, I can face tomorrow; Because he lives, all fear is gone; Because I know he holds the future, And life is worth the living just because he lives.
