He is an Arab and he is also a Christian. He has been teased and bullied by Arabs because he was a Christian rather than a Muslim. People have tried to hurt him simply because he was worshipping God. But he has kept going, feeling called by God to preach the Gospel to the Arab community in modern day Israel. I hope hearing from Pastor Khoury today will give you courage to live out your faith even when it is hard. I hope his loving response to anger will inspire you to love even those who try to hurt you. I hope you will see him as an example of how to follow Jesus and that it will help you follow Jesus, too. 2 Soul Food: A Word from Peter Welcome, Steven Khoury! Now, LORD, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. - Acts 4:29 This morning we welcome Steven Khoury as our guest preacher. Steven was born to an Arab Palestinian Christian family in the city of Jerusalem but grew up in Bethlehem. Today, he pastors the largest Arab evangelical church in East Jerusalem and in the Palestinian territories. He is a renowned speaker, television commentator and writer for Al-Quds, the largest Arabic newspaper in the Holy Land. I met Steven in February during a trip to the Holy Land. What impressed me most was his boldness. In a very hostile environment, Steven is not afraid or ashamed to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. His life has been threatened many times. He has been beaten up and stuffed in a trash can. In his church, they keep water buckets ready to douse any fi rebombs thrown at the church during the service. His passion is to reach those who are against Christ with the love of Jesus. I thank God for Steven Khoury and hope you will fi nd a moment this morning to greet him and encourage him! Sermon Notes: _ Junior Jam Saturday, October 13 Junior Jam is an annual event for 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th graders hosted by Cedarville University. It is like a one-day VBS experience featuring a nationally recognized Christian performer, break-out sessions with college student leaders, lunch, games, and music from Cedarville s student-led praise band. Sign-up sheets are available in the Excite and Engage classrooms on Sundays and Wednesdays. Just pick one up and return it to Miss Ann no later than Wednesday, October 3! This historic church enjoys a strong music ministry and is blessed with one of the fi nest pipe organs in the region. The position of Organist is an integral part of worship at Lebanon Presbyterian Church, contributing signifi cantly to the quality of LPC s traditional worship services. Responsibilities include Worship music for Sunday services as well as special seasonal services, assistance in oversight of organ maintenance and availability to provide music for occasional memorial services when appropriate. Once they have collected items, they will have a packing party on Friday, November 9. If you would like to help them support this mission, you can do so in one of two ways. LPC Holy Land Tour Information Meeting Have you dreamed of taking a life-changing journey to Israel? Do you yearn to walk where Jesus walked, visiting places like the Sea of Galilee, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jericho, Nazareth, Capernaum, while also experiencing contemporary life in this important center of faith? We will review offerings from four tour companies, including itineraries and costs, and consider possible travel dates so that we can solicit proposals from selected tour group(s) for an LPC Holy Land Tour. Although you were innocent of any crime, you were nailed to a cross and left to die in agony. LORD, we pray this morning for the persecuted church. By your spirit, give them peace in their pain and joy in their suffering. Give them boldness to speak, and faith to endure and overcome. Be present with them, that they would not feel alone. We ask especially for your church in the city of Bethlehem. In whatever trials they face, help them to be a shining light and a faithful witness to you.
