Psalm 145:14 GETTING TO KNOW US Many of us, if we were asked whether or not the goal of our prayer and spiritual life was to get to know God better, would most likely answer, Of course. But how many of us would think that another purpose of our prayer and spiritual life was for God to get to know us better? We think of God as the One who views the whole universe as a grain of sand. How can God get to know us better? The author of Wisdom reminds us that the Lord is a lover of souls (Wisdom 11:26) and lovers, if they do nothing else, are always seeking out their beloved, wanting to know them better, knowing yet overlooking their faults, wanting nothing but to love them more and more. In today s Gospel Jesus embodies this God whose imperishable spirit is in all things. Not only does he allow the extreme sinner Zaccheus to speak with him, but Jesus seeks him out, up in a tree. And then losing his head with love for his brother in the faith of Abraham Jesus becomes a part of his life by insisting that Zaccheus take him into his own house, the house he lived in through illgotten, sinful gains as a tax collector. Wisdom and Luke both tell us that God is willing to walk right into our frail sinfulness in order to know us better, love us more, and bring us in forgiveness to salvation. 2 Page 2 October 31, 2010 The Horror of Human Trafficking and Slavery What is at stake is the dignity of the human person, whose defense and promotion have been entrusted to us by the Creator, and to whom the men and women at every moment of history are strictly and responsibly in debt. John Paul II, Sollicitudo rei socialis In the document, Stop Trafficking of People the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (usccb.org) describes the worldwide issue of human trafficking and slavery. At the end of the twentieth century this new trend arose in the international movement of people. Through use of coercion, fraud, and force women and children, most especially, are trafficked as sex slaves. Many others are enslaved as domestics. Seven hundred thousand people are trafficked every year; fifty thousand into the United States. Women and children from Asia, Eastern Europe, Russia, South America, West Africa, and Mexico are trafficked and sold in Atlanta, Chicago, Hawaii, New York, and San Francisco; the largest importer of slaves in the United States from all source countries is Los Angeles. LAX is one of the largest destinations. From here they re trafficked to brothels around the country. Crucial to the fight against trafficking and slave trading are awareness, understanding, and education. Monday night at the UnUrban Coffee House Vanessa Lanza from the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking (CAST), and Lisa Helene Donovan of the Sisters of Notre Dame will make us aware of the problem, help us understand the dynamics of trafficking, and educate us to the action the Catholic Church is taking and what we can do to end this horrific devaluation of human dignity. 5 Page 5 October 31, 2010 Readings for the weekend of November 7th, 2010 Reading 1 2 Mc 7:1-2, 9-14 It happened that seven brothers with their mother were arrested and tortured with whips and scourges by the king, to force them to eat pork in violation of God's law. One of the brothers, speaking for the others, said: "What do you expect to achieve by questioning us? We are ready to die rather than transgress the laws of our ancestors." At the point of death he said: "You accursed fiend, you are depriving us of this present life, but the King of the world will raise us up to live again forever. It is for his laws that we are dying." After him the third suffered their cruel sport. He put out his tongue at once when told to do so, and bravely held out his hands, as he spoke these noble words: "It was from Heaven that I received these; for the sake of his laws I disdain them; from him I hope to receive them again." Even the king and his attendants marveled at the young man's courage, because he regarded his sufferings as nothing. After he had died, they tortured and maltreated the fourth brother in the same way. When he was near death, he said, "It is my choice to die at the hands of men with the hope God gives of being raised up by him; but for you, there will be no resurrection to life." Readings 2 2 Thes 2:16-3:5 Brothers and sisters: May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace, encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word. Finally, brothers and sisters, pray for us, so that the word of the Lord may speed forward and be glorified, as it did among you, and that we may be delivered from perverse and wicked people, for not all have faith. But the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one. We are confident of you in the Lord that what we instruct you, you are doing and will continue to do. May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the endurance of Christ. Gosepl Lk 20:27, Some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection, came forward. Jesus said to them, "The children of this age marry and remarry; but those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age and to the resurrection of the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. They can no longer die, for they are like angels; and they are the children of God because they are the ones who will rise. That the dead will rise even Moses made known in the passage about the bush, when he called out 'Lord, ' the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; and he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive." Join us for stimulating and thoughtful discussion of current bestsellers and classics. For this meeting, the members have chosen to read Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese. Focusing on the world of medicine, this epic novel follows a man on a mythic quest to find his father. Beginning in India, the story progresses to Ethiopia where it remains until the protagonist immigrates to an inner-city hospital in New York City. Marion, the narrator of this fictional autobiography, is one of a set of identical twins whose mother dies giving birth. Their horrorstruck father vanishes, and the boys are raised by Indian doctors living on the grounds of a mission hospital in early 1950s Ethiopia. The title Cutting for Stone is taken from the Hippocratic Oath, but may also reflect a double meaning. The biological father of Marion and his twin, Shiva, is Thomas Stone, a famous surgeon. In what may be a subconscious effort to emulate and impress their absent parent, both become skilled surgeons. They are Cutting for Stone. New members are welcome.
