You can P R E S I D E N T S M E S S A G E Dear Ladies, Here we are at the beginning of November and the holidays are near. We pause for a time of reflecting and remembering and for renewed commitment. We remember the Philoptochos members who founded our society. When I hear about the early beginnings of our Church in New Orleans, I am always amazed at the fortitude that seemed to accompany the founders of our Philoptochos Elpis Society. As we enter 2014 and join in the celebration of the 150 th anniversary of our Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Community, let us remember their dedication and determination. Our Philoptochos chapter did not just happen. It began as the seed of an idea that would grow into the organization we know today. Honoring our founders in 2014 is a worthy endeavor and will prove to be an inspiration to all of us. With a renewed commitment, Connie Tiliakos BREAST CANCER AWARENESS October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of breast cancer. Philoptochos sponsored Go Pink Sunday on October 13. Members wore pink to encourage everyone to become aware of how to detect breast cancer. Elaine Nugent and Faith Kyame (left) gave out pink ribbons and mints after Church services. Cathy Vial pins a pink ribbon, the national symbol for breast cancer awareness, on Paul Macris. 3 3 Patrick Latour Sophie Theodoran More than fifty seniors attended the Senior Citizens Luncheon on October 17. We thank Sophie Theodoran for sponsoring the luncheon. We, also, thank Patrick Latour who sponsored the luncheon in memory his beloved wife and Philoptochos member, Angelin Latour. We also extend our appreciation to Marcelle Orkoulas, who sponsored the luncheon in memory of her brother, Monier Gindi. Nancy Athas won a candle. Rania Mantikos won a plant Seniors chat before lunch is served. Vangie Malachias was a bingo winner. Philoptochos members prepared a delicious meal which included Pastichio, green beans, salad and apple pie ala mode. A lively game of bingo led by Cathy Vial and Debbie Funti followed the meal. The next Senior Citizens Luncheon is on November 14 and will feature turkey and all of the trimmings.

4 4 Elaine Nugent and Beth Andrews Each year during the month of October, Philoptochos sponsors a Community-Wide Garage Sale. Elaine Nugent, chairman of the sale for the last ten years, along with many Philoptochos members worked many hours before, during and after the sale in order the make it a success. They helped price items, served the public, worked at the cash register, and publicized the sale. Olga Christakis prepared lunch for the workers. Olga Christakis When the garage sale was over, items that were not sold were boxed up and given to Teen Challenge, Ozanam Inn, the Salvation Army and the Home for Battered Women. one of two major fundraisers for Philoptochos. Proceeds from the sale make it possible for Philoptochos to assist the needy and the poor on an international, national, and local level. The funds also help support many activities within our Holy Trinity community, as well as charitable programs, outreach, and other activities 1. Gently used women s clothing were put together to make up outfits to send to the New Orleans Chapter of Dress for Success. Clothing and kitchenware were given to a needy family in our community.
