Romans 8:28a A SHARE IN GOD S KINGDOM Today concludes a three-week series of Gospel texts in which we have listened to a total of seven parables about the kingdom. The believer is asked to consider the request that God made of Solomon in today s first reading: Ask something of me and I will give it to you (1 Kings 3:5). Today s parables about the treasure buried in the field and the pearl of great price should prompt us to answer, A share in your kingdom, O God! Today we discover that the kingdom of God is beyond value, a priceless treasure. Unfortunately, our culture bombards us with things that it believes are priceless treasures the bigger and better SUVs, anti-aging and anti-balding creams and salves, miracle diets, and so much more. Having a share in God s kingdom and helping to bring about that kingdom are the greatest treasures that we can ever hope to gain. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. 2 Page 2 July 24, 2011 TOGETHER IN MISSION 2011 Challenge A generous donor has challenged the parishioners of our parish with a gift of $10,000 for the Church General fund. In order for us to collect this gift, we must increase the number of participants who contribute to TIM by 10% and reach our pledge goal of $128,327. That would be adding 38 new participants. In order to be counted, please use the Together in Mission envelope in the pew for your donation. The deadline for the challenge is August 1 st. This gives us 2 months to finish up the Together In Mission Campaign. If we reach those goals our generous donor will add $10,000 to the general fund of the Parish. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has trained over 100,000 adults in the VIRTUS program. Initiated in 1997, the VIRTUS program is designed to prevent child sexual abuse by making adults aware of sexual abuse perpetuated by adults as well as other children. The training details five steps to prevent child sexual abuse: Knowing the warning signs of an inappropriate relationship with a child. Controlling access to children by carefully selecting the adults who work with children and youth. Monitoring all programs for the safety of children and youth. Being aware of and sensitive to what is going on in the lives of the children. Communicating concerns to the appropriate persons. Reading II Rom 8:35, Brothers and sisters: What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Gospel Mt 14:13-21 When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves. Jesus said to them, There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves. But they said to him, Five loaves and two fish are all we have here. Then he said, Bring them here to me, and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over twelve wicker baskets full. Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. With this ancient dialogue we enter the Eucharistic Prayer, the heart of the Mass. These venerable words have been part of the Christian liturgy almost from the beginning by the time of Hippolytus of Rome (c. 215) they were already fixed in the liturgy. Several times during the Mass the priest has invited us to pray. There is something different here. We are invited to be lifted up, to ascend, to climb the Lord s mountain, as it were, to go to a new place for this most solemn part of the Mass. And we are invited to a new frame of mind, a sense of joy, of focused dedication: our hearts must not be cast down, but lifted up, and lifted to the Lord. Why?
