1 St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Community Ohio Ave (at Selby) Los Angeles, California (310) Wherever you are on your faith journey, you are welcome here Third Sunday of Easter May 8, 2011 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence. Acts 2:28 GOD S PLAN Saint Peter speaks to us twice today. In the first reading, we hear an excerpt from his sermon on Pentecost; in the second, part of his first letter. Once a frightened, uneducated fisherman who often said just the wrong thing, now Peter is speaking what he knows to be true. Everything Jesus had said now makes sense. His death and rising were all part of God s plan, and our faith and hope can be centered on God. Today s Gospel tells the story of Jesus walk to Emmaus with two of the disciples. Frightened, sad, and confused, the two of them don t recognize Jesus, who tells them what we heard Peter say above: All this had to happen as part of God s plan. In the end, these disciples recognize Jesus as we are to recognize him in the breaking of the bread. Mass Schedule Sunday Masses 7:30 am 9:30 am 11:30 am 5:00 pm Saturday (one mass only) 5:00 pm Vigil Weekdays (Monday- Friday) Daily Masses are: and 5:30 PM Reconciliation Thursday & Saturday 4:00-4:45 pm First Friday Exposition Oct May Only
2 Page 2 May 8, 2011 We have bread and wine. We need nothing more. -Judges 19:19 Today are the First Communion Celebrations for our 2nd grade children of the school and religious education.. People will ask me, Do you remember your first Communion? Yes! I remember it so vividly! The most vivid memory was the angels with beautiful wings that led the children to the altar to receive Jesus. When the angel took me by the hand to that huge impressive altar, I thought I was going to heaven to receive Jesus. When I received the Eucharist, the angel waiting smiled, then reverently took my hand and led me back to my pew. As a young girl my remembrance of the angel and receiving Jesus was etched on my mind forever. Jesus was real even if I didn t see him! It was like a heavenly dream! The angels were 8th grade girls dressed as angels with beautiful wings. My young mind believed them to be real angels. The disciples on the road to Emmaus did not recognize Jesus until he gave thanks for the bread and broke it that they realized it was Jesus. The children receiving Eucharist today cannot see Jesus directly but they can experience his presence in the elements of the shared Eucharist of bread and wine. The breaking of bread today invites us into communion with one another. TODAY S READINGS First Reading God has raised the crucified Jesus, who now pours forth the Holy Spirit upon us (Acts 2:14, 22-33). Psalm Lord, you will show us the path of life (Psalm 16). Second Reading Our faith and hope are in God who raised Jesus from the dead (1 Peter 1:17-21). Gospel Through his words and in the breaking of the bread, the risen Christ made himself known to two disciples on their way to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35). Imagine your guardian angel taking your hand and leading you to the table to share bread and wine with him and others. Though not seen directly, Jesus is present as he speaks to us through scripture and joins us at the table. May we recognize Jesus every time we join someone on a journey, every time we share a meal, and every time we take bread into our hands! Blessings, Irene Holly, Director of Children Religious Education Complimentary Valet Parking Sunday, May 15th 11:30 am Mass Valet Parking will be available At the Emerson Junior High Lot The Valet Entrance will be on Selby Ave Just south of the School Buildings Sunday, May 15, :30 am Special Anniversary Mass followed by refreshments and school tours from 12:30 4:00 pm For more information contact Trish Cantillon trishcantillon@hotmail.com "Every Window Tells a Story" Books Sales at the Masses on May 15th When was the last time you looked at our beautiful stained glass windows? 6 Page 6 May 8, 2011 Readings for the weekend of May 15th, 2011 Reading 1 Acts 2:14a, Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed: Let the whole house of Israel know for certain that God has made both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified. Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and they asked Peter and the other apostles, What are we to do, my brothers? Peter said to them, Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is made to you and to your children and to all those far off, whomever the Lord our God will call. He testified with many other arguments, and was exhorting them, Save yourselves from this corrupt generation. Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand persons were added that day. Reading 2 1 Pt 2:20b-25 Beloved: If you are patient when you suffer for doing what is good, this is a grace before God. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in his footsteps. He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth. When he was insulted, he returned no insult; when he suffered, he did not threaten; instead, he handed himself over to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you had gone astray like sheep, but you have now returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls. Gospel Jn 10:1-10 Jesus said: Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever does not enter a sheepfold through the gate but climbs over elsewhere is a thief and a robber. But whoever enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice, as the shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has driven out all his own, he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they recognize his voice. But they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of strangers. Although Jesus used this figure of speech, the Pharisees did not realize what he was trying to tell them. So Jesus said again, Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.
