Psalm 98:5 PERSEVERE IN OUR DAILY WORK In our world and culture, where hard work is valued so much (we even give over a whole day on the civic calendar to celebrate labor) and our busyness seems to escalate continually, Paul s admonitions to the Thessalonians seem a bit obvious. But even in our lives today, when we have more and more devices to save time, and still seem to have less and less of it, people yet find ways to be busybodies in the midst of all their busy-ness. In Paul s day, some members of the Christian community were being idle because they knew the Lord was returning in glory very soon. Why bother to work? So they turned their attention to meddling in the lives of others. Theirs was a rather complacent I ve been saved attitude in the face of the great tumult of the end times described by Malachi and Jesus in the Gospel. These days, we have no such potent notion of the Lord s imminent return, but Paul s message, which has an echo both in Malachi and Luke, is still pertinent for us. We must keep on doing our daily work, and persevere in it, consecrate it all to the Lord, and tend to being faithful until the time of his return. 2 Page 2 November 14, 2010 Westside Thanksgiving Day Celebration & Dinner Est Consisting of Westside churches, schools, and organizations reaching out to those in need On Thanksgiving Day, we look forward to hosting over 3,000 guests for a complete Thanksgiving Day dinner at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Our guests come from all walks of life, from homeless individuals and working poor families to college students unable to get home for the holiday. Date: Thanksgiving Day Time: Doors open at 11:00 a.m. and we stop serving at 3:00 p.m. Place: Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, 1855 Main Street (at Pico Bl.) SERVICES PROVIDED: A traditional Thanksgiving meal: turkey, dressing, green beans, salad, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, bread roll, pumpkin pie, and choice of milk, coffee or fruit drink. *Hygiene kits *Children s recreation area *social services & outreach *Haircuts *Christmas cards and mailing* Ask-the- Doctor & First Aid *Blankets *complete clothing department *prayer, Bibles WHY IT S SO SPECIAL: No other event on the Westside brings together such a wide collection of inter-faith organizations, companies, and individuals to create a celebration that brings peace and joy to guests and volunteers alike. From food preparation to clothing to haircuts to decorations to music to serving food to recycling to medical services, each and every aspect of the day is organized to create fellowship and celebration. Anyone interest in helping before or on Thanksgiving Day can sign up through the hotline ( ) Save the Date May 5, 2011 Grandparents' and Special Friends' Day at SPA Some live around the block, others live in Maine or Florida or Arizona, but all of our Grandparents have a special place in the hearts of our students. To honor Grandparents, we are planning a special afternoon with a performance in church, time in the classrooms and a reception in the JCPC. For our school families, please go to spapwc.com to provide addresses for grandparents or special friends. A save the date card will be mailed before the holidays with the invitation to follow in April. Deadline to ensure grandparents receive the save the date card is November 19. It will be a "grand" celebration! TODAY S READINGS First Reading There will arise the sun of justice with its healing rays (Malachi 3:19-20a). Psalm The Lord comes to rule the earth with justice (Psalm 98). Second Reading Paul speaks of his hard work among the Thessalonians (2 Thessalonians 3:7-12). Gospel Jesus foretells the destruction of Jerusalem, the persecution of his followers. But their perseverance will be their salvation (Luke 21:5-19). The Sunday 9:30am mass on the 1st and 4th Sundays of each month The Sunday 9:30 is developing a contemporary choir. If you love to sing, have some experience and are able to meet for a 1 ½ hour rehearsal the week of the mass, please contact the Musical Director, Philip Cordaro, via at Music.cordphil@gmail. In addition to choir members, we are looking to add a percussionist, bassist, and pianist. Rehearsal and mass begin the first week of November. All volunteers are required to audition. December 24th Children's Christmas Choir December 19th CHRISTMAS LESSONS AND CAROLS CHRISTMAS EVE 4:00 MASS Our Children s Christmas Choir will be singing at 'Christmas Lessons and Carols' on December 19th and also at the Christmas Eve 4:00 pm mass. Please direct any questions to damos@higherlegal.com Community Assistance Ministry St. Paul s provides a community wide assistance ministry to serve our parishioners who are homebound, hospitalized or in nursing homes. We will arrange rides to appointments and shopping in the local West LA and Santa Monica area (the services are free, but if there are parking fees they must be paid by the recipient before leaving their place of residence). We provide outside referrals for all other needs. Three days advance notice is required. We do not provide financial assistance. (RCIA) RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a process through which searchers explore the life of the Church and the role of Christ in their lives in an environment of care and support. When all the elders of Israel came to David in Hebron, King David made an agreement with them there before the LORD, and they anointed him king of Israel. Reading 2 Col 1:12-20 Brothers and sisters: Let us give thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light. He delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. Even the soldiers jeered at him. As they approached to offer him wine they called out, "If you are King of the Jews, save yourself." Above him there was an inscription that read, "This is the King of the Jews." Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying, "Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us." The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply, "Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation? And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal." Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." He replied to him, "Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise." Question for GOSPEL: Luke 23: (Christ on the Cross) Even at the worst moment in his life, Jesus had compassion for someone else. Is there someone I know who is suffering who I can help?
