2 PAGE 2 May 25, 2008 One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic A MOUNTAINTOP EXPERIENCE At 1 am a knock came on my door. It is time, a disembodied voice murmured in heavily accented English. I swam into consciousness, not quite sure where I was, but feeling the chill of December mountain air against my forehead. Then I remembered. I was about to join six companions in an early morning climb to the summit of Jebel Musa (Arabic for mountain of Moses ) by tradition the site of biblical Mt. Sinai. The day before we had endured a ten hour drive in a cramped van, watching flat gray desert finally yield to the more photogenic reddish brown mountains of the Sinai range. Now and then a green palm tree softened the starkness of red earth. Bedouins rode by mounted on camelback. We had entered a world that spoke the mystery of Other. The first station toward our destination was a simple hostel on the edge of a small village. We ate early and quietly, a little nervous about what was to come. I went to bed at sunset. An instant later the knock on my door summoned me back to the van for a night time journey to our second station, a Bedouin encampment just outside the walls of St. Catherine s monastery. St. Catherine s is itself a worthy goal for any pilgrim. The monks inside the walls date the beginnings of their prayerful community to the 3 rd century. At this early morning hour, however, the gates of the monastery were locked. Our true destination was a campfire around which waited our guides. We had the option of riding two thirds of the climb by camel or hiking the entire distance led by a wrinkled, toothless guide whose name, Musa, was the same attached to the mountain. The camel ride sounded exotic, but I wanted to test my fitness by climbing the full distance. Belying his ancient appearance, our guide and leader proved fast and skillful on his feet. It was hard to keep my eyes focused on the winding trail. I was drawn to the star-filled sky like a sunflower to the sun. No moon appeared, but starlight traced the outline of the mountain range looming above us and illumined the path we traveled. As we climbed the wind grew colder. That morning we d left Cairo where the winter temperatures never dropped below 80 degrees. Now I was grateful for the heavy windbreaker I d brought just in case. Along the way were lamp-lit tents at which we happily purchased cups of Turkish coffee and chocolate. We reached the summit before dawn. In the darkness we stumbled over pilgrims in sleeping bags, and became aware of other shadowy figures huddled against the now brisk morning wind. We overheard conversations in French, Italian, and German. We sought shelter in a cave and met a group of Australians who offered a sip from their bottle of Egyptian brandy to take the edge off our chill. Soon the first rays of the sun emerged from the Eastern depths of the Red Sea. Before this fiery light all conversation ceased. After a time our guide led us a short way down the mountain to a wind-worn pile of stone unnoticed by the crowd above. It was a Muslim shrine to his namesake Moses--built, Musa told us, at the very place where God gifted the one-time shepherd with tablets to form a people. This people were much like me, I couldn t help thinking. They received manna to nourish their bodies and the Law to seal their covenant and were scarcely grateful for either. How astonishing that the One we climb mountains to find is best discovered in the most ordinary times and places of our daily life, sharing Divine life in the simplest of foods. The sun was now rising above the craggy rocks, melting the frost in our bones. It was time to make our way down the still winding but now well lit trail. It was time to begin fixing in memory all we had seen and felt. It was time to break bread. Joe Scott, C.S.P. Memorial Day will be observed on Monday, May 26th The Church Office will be closed on that day we will have one 9:00 am

8 PAGE 8 May 25, 2008 Senior s Corner May is Older Americans Month... When we honor the contributions of our seniors -- the seniors of St. Paul s who built this church. That s important to remember. Look around you and you ll see a senior whose contribution made it possible for you to be here. They give their time, talent and treasure in service to the parish and beyond. In the best tradition of discipleship they care for the sick, the hungry, the dying, and the lonely. They use their gifts of the Spirit to build up the Church. St. Paul the Apostle Community owes a debt of gratitude to these individuals who worked to build the parish we enjoy today. On May 28 the Seniors Ministry will honor four of our own for their service and dedication to the St. Paul the Apostle community. The honorees are Pien Pook Van Baggen, Richard Welch, and Jackie and Dan Cathcart. Join us Wednesday, May 28, in the Church at 10:30 AM, when we will honor our Seniors with a special Mass celebrated by Fr. Joe Scott, CSP, with music by David Kowal and Chris Green. A Luncheon will follow in the Upper Social Hall. No charge to Seniors for the Lunch. Reservations are required -- call Agnes at , by Sunday May 25. Book Club... The next meeting will be on Friday, June 6, 2008 in the Multipurpose Room from 9:00 to 10:30 AM. Join us for stimulating and thoughtful discussion of current bestsellers and classics. For this meeting the group has chosen to read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. This is the poignant tale of four years in the life of Liesel, a 10-year-old when she arrives to live with a foster family in Germany during WWII. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau. The author manages to portray the horror and tragedy of war and the Holocaust at the same time show the beauty of humanity. New members are welcome. 9 Page 9 May 25, 2008 Scripture of the Week These are the readings for Sunday, June 1, Please read and reflect on these readings during the week (alone or with family and friends), and come to next Sunday s liturgy prepared to listen attentively to the proclamation of the Word of God. Reading 1 Dt 11:18,26-28,32 Moses told the people, Take these words of mine into your heart and soul. Bind them at your wrist as a sign, and let them be a pendant on your forehead. I set before you here, this day, a blessing and a curse: a blessing for obeying the commandments of the LORD, your God, which I enjoin on you today; a curse if you do not obey the commandments of the LORD, your God, but turn aside from the way I ordain for you today, to follow other gods, whom you have not known. NINTH SUNDAY (June 1) READINGS: Moses calls the people to obey God s commandments and be blessed. All have sinned, and all are redeemed by grace through Christ Jesus. Doing the will of God will save you, listen and act on Jesus s words. QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Am I sure that my spiritual house is being built on a firm foundation? How am I retrofitting my spiritual home? FOR CHILDREN: If we build a house on sand at the beach, the sea or the wind will make it fall down. If we build our house on solid rock then the wind may shake it and the waves splash against it, but it won t fall down. Jesus says that when we do what God wants, we are like the house built on rock. Let s ask God how we can help someone this week? Reading II Rom 3:21-25,28 Brothers and sisters, Now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, though testified to by the law and the prophets, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction; all have sinned and are deprived of the glory of God. They are justified freely by his grace through the redemption in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as an expiation, through faith, by his blood. For we consider that a person is justified by faith apart from works of the law. Gospel Mt. 7:21-27 Jesus said to his disciples: Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? Did we not drive out demons in your name? Did we not do mighty deeds in your name? Then I will declare to them solemnly, I never knew you. Depart from me, you evildoers. Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock. And everyone who listens to these words of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on sand. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. And it collapsed and was completely ruined.
