Matthew 5:3 GOD S WAYS If we itemized the top eight things that bring us happiness, what items might show up on the list? A hefty bank account? A Caribbean cruise or African safari? A shopping mall marathon? Season tickets for the hometown team? A new car? If we already have some of these things, most likely we know they don t bring us true happiness. Fact is, they probably bring us more aggravation items to return or repair, one more object for people to argue over. Today s scriptures point us toward the things that bring us true joy. The words of all three passages conflict with our society s conviction that fortune, fame, and power are the soughtafter treasures of life. God s ways are not the ways of our popular culture, after all, and today s readings help point us in the right direction. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. 2 Page 2 January 30, 2011 Celebrate Catholic School Week & The Catholic Education Foundation 2011 marks the 160th year of Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles! The Catholic Education Foundation provides much needed tuition assistance for the poor and marginalized students who seek a Catholic Education in the Archdiocese. In the past 23 years, CEF has granted over $108 million dollars in tuition awards to over 110,00 awardees. The reasons to invest in CEF s economically disadvantaged students are clear. 100% continuation rate from 8th to 9th grade 98% 4-year high school graduation rate 98% college attendance rate Our Catholic Schools are committed to educating the poor. Over 1/3 (27,000) of Catholic school students in the Los Angeles Archdiocese live at or below the poverty line. The average annual income of a CEF family of 4 is $24,000. The demand for a Catholic education is up while family incomes are down. Annually 14,000 students apply to CEF and only 7,000 students are funded. There are currently 30,000 opens seats in Catholic classroom throughout the city. CEF is dedicated to filling those seats. St. Paul the Apostle is proud to support the Catholic Education Foundation. Second Reading God chose the weak of the world, those who count for nothing, so that whoever boasts should boast in the Lord (1 Corinthians 1:26-31). Gospel Jesus taught from the mountain: Blessed are the poor in spirit (Matthew 5:1-12a). TOGETHER IN MISSION 2011 February 12 & 13 will be the launch weekend for Together In Mission. This program is at the heart of the Mission of St. Paul the Apostle Parish. What is the Together In Mission Campaign? Together in Mission is an annual fund raising campaign. It dedicates its annual appeal to assist parishes and schools that cannot survive economically without outside financial support. The people in all of our 291 parishes including those that are subsidized, are asked to make a financial commitment to this important cause. Why Should People Give to Together in Mission? This program provides funding for operating expenses to keep 35 parishes and 61 schools open. Together In Mission provides an opportunity to share our financial gifts in order to help provide education, ministry and services through the parishes and schools that are assisted by the campaign. Every time that we say the Creed we reaffirm the fact that we are member of the one holy catholic and apostolic church. We are saying that every parish and every parishioner is responsible not only for his or her parish but also for the well being of the Church here in the City of the Angels and Church throughout the world. As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God s varied grace. (1 Pt 4:10).

Donations by visiting my FirstGiving page: JOB SEEKING SUPPORT GROUP RESTARTS on 2/3/11 St Paul The Apostle Catholic Community s job support group begins its winter meetings on Thursday February 3rd. The group serves persons who are seeking employment. Past members have helped one another in upgrading resumes and job interviewing skills and have provided emotional support and leads to jobs. The group will meet weekly on Thursdays for 6 weeks from 1:00 to 2:30:PM in the multipurpose room. It is being co-facilitated by Dr. Charlie Healy and retired business executives from the parish. Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your wound shall quickly be healed; your vindication shall go before you, and the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer, you shall cry for help, and he will say: Here I am!
