Jesuit General Congregation 36 - decree 1 n.7 A discerning community with open horizons During their time in Venice, the companions were not always together; they were dispersed in order to fulfill many tasks. Nevertheless, it was at that time that they shared the experience of constituting a single group, united in following Christ, in the midst of the diversity of their activities. We Jesuits today are also engaged in a great variety of apostolates, which often demand specialization and a great deal of energy. If, however, we forget that we are one body, bound together in and with Christ, we lose our identity as Jesuits and our ability to bear witness to the Gospel. It is our union with one another in Christ that testifies to the Good News more powerfully than our competences and abilities.
CVX General principles We recognize particularly the necessity of prayer and discernment, personal and communal, of the daily examination of consciousness and of spiritual guidance as important means for seeking and finding God in all things. (G.P. part 1: Our Charism, 5) The Community helps us to live this apostolic commitment in its different dimensions, and to be always open to what is more urgent and universal, particularly through the "Review of life" and through personal and communal discernment. (G.P. part 1: Our Charism, 8 c) Apostolic discernment, both individual and communal, is the ordinary way of discovering how best to bring Christ's presence, concretely, to our world. (G.P. part two 12 b)
ESDAC Methodology helps groups towards communal discernment to find their Identity, vocation and mission
What does means?
Exercices Spirituels pour un Discernement Apostolique Communautaire Spiritual Exercises for a Communal Apostolic Discernment Esercizi Spirituali per un Discernimento Apostolico in Comune Ejercicios Espirituales para un Discernimiento Apostólico Comunitario Discovering together, as a group, our best response to God s call What are they? Esdac is the legacy of the American/Canadian team that in the 80s ellaborated and shared ISECP (Ignatian Spiritual Exercises for Corporate Person). These are practical exercises intended for groups wanting to respond to God s calling They have a personal and communal dimension They are spiritual because they are founded on the inner and spiritual dimensions of people
Common Discernment Discernment leads to the following questions How to accomplish the Will of God? When there are two good possible ways, which one is the one to be chosen? How do we know what kind of spiritual movement motivates our decision: the Holy Spirit, us, or the evil spirit?
Communal Discernment Helps groups and communities to Be aware of the grace which unites and strengthen them Highlight where we have been unfaithful to the grace at the personal and communal level Recognize our common history and the movements ( motions ) of the Spirit Integrate their synergies for the service of the common mission Discover together the best response to God s call
Common Discernment FUNDAMENTAL ASPECTS Spiritual Conversation Personal Prayer Small Faith-Sharing Groups Assembly Faith-Sharing
Jesuit General Congregation 36 - Decree An essential tool that can animate apostolic communal discernment is spiritual conversation. Spiritual conversation involves an exchange marked by active and receptive listening and a desire to speak of that which touches us most deeply. It tries to take account of spiritual movements, individual and communal, with the objective of choosing the path of consolation that fortifies our faith, hope and love. Spiritual conversation creates an atmosphere of trust and welcome for ourselves and others. We ought not to deprive ourselves of such conversation in the community and in all other occasions for decision-making in the Society.
Spiritual Conversation The Voice of the Spirit My personal prayer REQUIREMENTS Active listening Prayer of the other members Opennes to sharing
Personal Prayer HOW TO PRAY Ask God for the grace you want to receive Use your imagination Gather thoughts and feelings Put yourself in the presence of God Put yourself in the presence of the Lord and acknowledge your biases Choose what to share Pray the Examen and discover the fruits of your prayer Share your experience of prayer with your small faith-sharing group Share
Small Faith-Sharing Groups CHARACTERISTICS Small groups are usually made of 5-6 people An intimate and fraternal place to share We share our experiences of personal prayer and listen to one another s experiences of prayer Together we discover how the Spirit is calling us as a small group to
Assembly Faith-Sharing Continue the spiritual conversation started in the small groups Listening to the disposition of the group by paying attention to the Spirit Sharing what is considered usefull for common decisions
MORNING Assembly Daily ESDAC Agenda 1 Personal prayer on a common topic/question Spiritual Conversations in Small Faith- Sharing-Groups Spiritual Conversations in the Assembly + topics/questions AFTERNOON Assembly 2 Personal prayer on a common topic/question Spiritual Conversations Small Faith- Sharing-Groups Spiritual Conversations in the Assembly + topics and questions Evaluation Mass, Contemplation or Prayer (it may vary)
