1 Beulah News Beulah Unite d Metho dist Church 161 Beulah Church Rd. dme tho distchurch.org October 2015 What Would Granny Say? M y Granny Tharpe was not what one might consider proper in the way society defines proper. She was a bit gruff and a bit tough and altogether one of the neatest people I have ever known. She was such an odd combination of tenderness and toughness, of kindness and strictness, of femininity and don t mess with me, that figuring out what she was going to do next was not the easiest thing to do. In certain instances, however, there was no doubt what she would do. As we watched helplessly when three young men drowned in a whirlpool below the Dead Lakes spillway; or when my brother s appendix ruptured and came very close to killing him; or when the day was particularly pretty; or when the mood just hit her; at such times she would rush into action and pray. I don t recall her being particularly religious, strictly speaking. Yea, she would go to the Saint Andrews Methodist Church every Sunday with the express purpose of sitting behind my Grandmother Rowell and pestering her; but aside from that she wasn t one to attend circle meetings or serve on committees. She was what I call a blue collar Christian, living the simple life of loving her family and her God. When the need arose however, she would pray and she didn t care who was around or what anyone, and I mean anyone, thought about it. Granny was for lack of a better term, unwavering in all she did. Now the Bible was not often read aloud at Granny s house, but to the best of my recollection it was never dusty either. In the privacy of her time with God, Granny read His word and she knew what He expected; and through the eyes of a loving grandson, she didn t appear to disappoint Him all that often. As I have watched the world go from bad to worse since Granny s passing, I have wondered what my Granny would have thought about the current state of affairs. I can t say she ever had much use for the government to begin with, but when our government started attacking God in schools, on the city square and over the airwaves, Granny got angry. Granny lived with my mom and dad for a year of so before her death; and during that time she and I talked about such things and she was, to say the least, appalled. Now, with the escalation of attacks on the Christian faith, I wonder what she would say to you and me. What advice would she give to help fit us for battle? As I thought about it, it came to me what her first response would be. Her first response, I have little doubt, would be a simple question directed at those of us who claim Christ as our Lord and Savior. She would look each and every one of us in the eye and without a hint of self-consciousness she would ask: So tell me, what are you doing at home? Are you reading the Bible (Continued on page 2)

2 PAGE 2 BEULAH NEWS What Would Granny Say? (cont.) (Continued from page 1) or the T.V. guide? Are you praying at anytime other than the few well-rehearsed words you say over your meals? Do you offer anything other than lip service to God? Where is God in your life? How can you expect your children to pray in school or at a ball game or anywhere else for that matter, when you have not taught them how to pray in their own home? Never forget that change starts at home. Fighting for prayer in school, a nativity scene on the courthouse lawn and the like is all well and good, but praying at home has always been available and seldom is it exercised. God s Word is available in, I dare say, every household where this writing has found rest; and yet I ll bet you that the majority of the Bibles are left dusty and forgotten. Just ask yourself, When was the last time I opened God s Word at home? Ask yourself, When was the last time I opened the Word of God? Fight for Christ in school and at ball games and anywhere else where the freedom of religion is threatened; but remember this: before you can go into the world and fight for God, you must first fight for Him in your own home. I believe that is what Granny would say. I can hear her voice and see her weather worn face right now in my mind s eye. I can see those black eyes staring into mine. I can sense the years and the wisdom in her stare; and I can feel the shame welling up in me as I thank God that she is not present to hear my answer. How about you? Love, Pastor Tony Fellowship Friends will list in the bulletin each month a Star Member. A star member is anyone over 65, a nursing home member or a home bound member. Thank you again for supporting our Scouts! Mylisa Apperson, Gilbert Primary School Thank you to our Beulah Church family. Thanks to everyone for your calls and cards during my recent surgery. The flowers were beautiful and cheered me up. A special thanks to Pastor Tony for being with me and my family the day of my surgery. May God continue to bless Beulah and all of the members. In Christ s love, Naomi Dear Beulah Church Family, Thanks so much for all the cards, s, texts, Facebook posts and personal words and phone calls after the passing of my sister Debbie. All the thoughts and prayers made this difficult time more bearable and the trip home to Louisiana a little easier. Thanks again so much. Billy Brown Thank you so much for getting us these bibles with our names on it. They will be very helpful and will be used every day. David Helps Dear Everyone, Thank you for supporting me in everything I do. Everyone here at church is like family to me. This bible will help me in strengthening my bond with Jesus Christ. Growin in Christ, Garrett Knight Dear Beulah, I am so very grateful for the Bible you have given me and the others in our Youth Group. Thank you so much for your generosity. The Bible is a very precious gift and I know that I will learn lots about God and his promises from it. I look forward to reading more and more of it as I continue on my walk of faith and being able to rely on it for guidance. Thank you so much for the great blessing that you have given to me. In Christ, Amy Baker Dear BUMC, I greatly appreciate the purchase of the personalized bibles for our Sunday School class. I think that these bibles are very special and that the other students and myself will take better care of them because they are so nice and specialized for each individual student. Thanks again for these great gifts, I think that other students will greatly appreciate them -- I know I will! TJ Langfitt Dear Fellow Christians: On behalf of the 2015 Batesburg-Leesville Salkehatchie Camp, I would like to offer my sincere thanks and gratitude to your church for helping to provide nourishment for the campers and other volunteers during our recently completed week or service. Your contributions were invaluable to the overall success of the camp (and the food was DELICIOUS!). Your outreach to Salkehatchie campers has reminded me of the familiar teaching of Jesus in Matthew 25, when Jesus said, for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me Thank you for serving our campers, and ultimately Jesus, in such a tangible and meaningful way. My prayer is that you will join everyone affiliated with the Batesburg-Leesville Camp in praising God for the way lives were changed and outlooks brightened during our week together. It is always a remarkable thing when God s people bring their gifts, talents, resources, and energy to the table to positively impact their communities. Blessings, Elizabeth Connell, Meal Coordinator 4th Sunday Night Singing October 25th - The Centerions November 15th - 3rd Sunday - TBA

5 BEULAH NEWS PAGE 5 Project Pantry for Meals on Wheels PROJECT PANTRY NEEDS YOUR HELP!!! Each December we assemble food bags for senior individuals who use Meals on Wheels services and distribute them prior to the Christmas holidays. Our mission is to end senior hunger, we are aware of the daily struggles that confront so many of our participants on a daily basis. As you know the holidays can also be particularly challenging for those who live alone, have limited family or have lost loved ones to death. Through the food bag distribution in December, it is our hope to let our clients know that they are cared for and at the same time to maintain our mission to end senior hunger. Would you please consider helping us?? Project Pantry will prepare the bags that will have the essentials to provide an easily prepared meal for each of their clients. They would like to invite us to assist with the project by conducting a nonperishable food collection. Items needed for the food bag include a 16 oz. box of spaghetti noodles, 24 oz. meat flavored spaghetti sauce, 15 oz. can of green beans, 15 oz. can of whole kernel corn, applesauce or fruit cups (6 or 8 cup packages, and individual packets of grits and oatmeal. Operation Christmas Child - Samaritan s Purse Shoeboxes Since 1993, Samaritan s Purse has delivered shoebox gifts packed by caring people like you to more than 113 million children. A shoebox filled with small toys, hygiene items, and school supplies tangibly demonstrates God s love to a child in need. This year, once again, Beulah will be partnering with churches around the world to pack shoeboxes to reach children with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. A small shoebox can have a big impact. What goes into the box is fun, but what comes out of it is eternal. Be a part of changing children's lives all over the world in Jesus' Name through the power of a simple gift with Operation Christmas Child. Mary and Martha Circle will be providing boxes, which you can fill and return by the second week of November. Watch the newsletter and bulletin for the exact date and collection site. When you pack your shoebox, remember to pray that God will touch the heart of every child who receives a shoebox gift, and that many children and families will come to faith in Jesus Christ. Tips for Packing Your Shoebox 1. Get your box from Mary and Martha Circle. If you want to wrap it, cover the box and lid separately. 2. Decide whether you will pack a box for a girl or a boy, and the age category: 2-4, 5-9, or Select a quality wow toy such as a doll, soccer ball with pump, or stuffed animal. Then add other fun toys, hygiene items, and school supplies. 4. Most importantly, pray for the child who will receive your gift. You can also include a personal note and photo. For more tips and gift ideas, visit what-we-do/operation-christmaschild/.

11 BEULAH NEWS PAGE 11 Audacity Noun: The willingness to take bold risks Synonyms: Boldness, daring, fearlessness, intrepidity, bravery, courage, heroism, pluck, grit On Saturday, September 12 th, more than fifty women attended the Beth Moore simulcast in the Family Life Center here at Beulah. Various ages, races, and denominations came together to hear Beth Moore powerfully teach about Audacity and what it takes to be a mighty woman of God. It went hand-in-hand with Pastor Tony s recent messages encouraging us to stand firm for the Lord and how now, in these challenging times, it is great to be a Christian. The day was interspersed with sermons, praise music and worship encouraging and empowering us to be fearless for the Lord. To have: 1. The Audacity to make an unseen Savior the supreme romance of your life 2. The Audacity to live in the tension that comes with loving in truth 3. The Audacity to pray for astonishing works of the Holy Spirit 4. The Audacity to forgive and live forgiven 5. The Audacity to hold tight to Romans 8:18 I consider that the sufferings of the present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us 6. The Audacity to walk in humility The volunteers outdid themselves in providing a professional-like setting, great food and an atmosphere where we felt wrapped in the presence of the Lord. A big thank you to the Kenneth Shuler Schools of Cosmetology for sponsoring the event. It is hoped by those who attended that it won t be the last. Live audaciously with guts to bring people to Jesus
