1 Beulah News Beulah Unite d Metho dist Church 161 Beulah Church Rd. dme tho distchurch.org May 2015 Let Not Your Hearts T here are few activities that I enjoy more than heading off all by myself to the woods and spending an afternoon hiking through the Congaree Swamp. I have been asked many times what draws me to such an activity. I usually strap something heavy on my back, I sweat, I swat mosquitoes that rival your average sparrow in size, I get thirsty and I get tired. I have to beware of snakes, scorpions and the occasional loud mouthed hiker who has yet to grasp the idea that wildlife tends to shy away from loud obnoxious voices, and if I m are not careful I could reenact an old Burt Reynolds movie and never be seen again. So, you might ask, why the fascination? Well, it s simple. The peace that resides in the swamp is marvelous. Now, when I first arrive at the ranger station, there is usually a bus load or two of grade school children doing what such children always do: disturbing the peace. The pushing and shoving, the yelling and the excited voices of the few truly interested kids questioning their teachers and the rangers fills the air; and for someone seeking quiet refuge, the fight or flight instinct begins to rise to the surface. Once I start down the boardwalk, however, the forest begins to dampen the voices of the children and the clamor of the outside world begins to fade. Then as I go further in and leave the boardwalk behind to venture down one of the longer trails that ninety five percent of the visitors never experience, the world behind is swallowed by a palpable silence. As I proceed further, that silence morphs into a peace that just an hour or so before was thought unattainable. Continuing on, the voices of the birds, the myriad sounds of the other wildlife, the whisper of the wind and that mysterious under-voice of nature that I have never fully identified begin to envelop me. Then the peace that surrounds me moves in. It is at the moment when the world seems a distant place and the towering trees remind me that I am but a small part of a grand scheme, that the still small voice of God can be heard. For me the message of that voice is always the same. As I walk on God whispers in my ear that the quiet of the moment is to be cherished, but that the peace is to be claimed. Life is not always quiet. The voices that vie for our attention can be very insistent, and if we are not careful a subtle panic can work its way into our souls. When that occurs, the promised peace of God becomes endangered by the incessant bawling of the world. The temptation to listen to the world s wailing is strong. Giving into the urgency of the moment appears much more sensible than quietly waiting for and trusting the God of our fathers to bring His promised peace. Nevertheless trust requires patience, and patience (Continued on page 2)

2 PAGE 2 BEULAH NEWS Let Not Your Hearts (cont.) (Continued from page 1) requests to God. 7 requires trust. Do you trust Christ? If you do, then claim His peace and be willing to wait in quiet confidence for that still small voice that carries it. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Phil 4:4-7 4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your Love, Pastor Tony Fellowship Friends will list in the bulletin each month a Star Member. A star member is anyone over 65, a nursing home member or a home bound member. These are our special members who need our care and concern. Greeting cards or note cards are a great way to stay in touch when we can t visit or call. Our Star Member for the month is: Sarah Bailey Downing Way

3 BEULAH NEWS PAGE 3 Beulah Methodist Church and Sunshine Club, I would like to thank everyone for calls, cards and prayers after my accident. Thank you Pastor Tony for your visit and the Sunshine Club for the pretty flowers that brightened my days. I am so grateful to have such a loving church family. God Bless, Martha Garlock Thank you to all who prepared the amazing dinner for our family in the home coming of our brother, Gerald Riddle. God Bless all of you. From all of Gerald s Brothers and Sisters and Families My Beulah Family, I must be the luckiest person in the world to have such a loving and caring Christian family. I am so blessed. You will never know how much it has meant to me to receive all the beautiful cards and well wishes. They are all so encouraging for me to get better soon so I can get back to our pew at church and see all of your smiling faces. However, it s not in my time but His time, and that s okay with me! I am getting stronger ever day. It will take a while to get all my strength back, but Rehab is working on that. They work you pretty hard. My journey forward will still be a long, hard, uphill battle, but with God s healing hands my awesome God will get me to where he needs me to be. I m very blessed to have him as my Lord and Savior. When I woke up that Wednesday in ICU and saw Pastor Tony standing at the foot of my bed, at first I thought I was dreaming. Pastor Tony that meant the world to me for you to come all this way to see about me. Thank you so much. Thank all my Beulah family again for the cards and words of encouragement. It still feels good to hear from home. In Christian love and love to all, Brucie Bagwell P.S. Hope you all had a wonderful Easter. 11 Volunteer Opportunities at Hometown Nazareth VBS In just a few short months, our church will be filled with the aromas, sights, and sounds of kids participating in fun discovery activities at a special Holy Land Adventure in Nazareth! We will worship God with songs and prayer, create unique craft projects, and discover God s powerful love in exciting and memorable ways. We will experience what it was like to live in a town where many people didn t believe that Jesus was really God s Son! To have the best adventure possible, we need lots of volunteers who can share time, energy, and love with the kids who attend. Below are some great ways you can help make this program a success. Will you please check out the following list then pray about where God might use you? Together, we can step back in time and bring Jesus hometown Nazareth to life at Beulah United Methodist Church! Celebration Leader: Help kids and adults transition from modern day to Bible times as you lead everyone in songs at Hometown Nazareth. You ll have a blast with the music and motions of these Holy Land Adventure songs! Fun & Games Leader: Lead fun activities as you help us discover games that kids like Jesus might have played in ancient Nazareth. Shopkeepers: In the Marketplace Shops, you ll guide Tribes in making unique, hands-on craft projects. In your role as a merchant, you ll listen to kids and adults talk about Jesus, God s Son. Tribe Leaders: An easy-to-follow leader manual and Hometown Huddle Teaching Kit help you lead a Tribe of approximately 10 people.
