1 161 Beulah Church Rd. dme tho distchurch.org Reflections on a Windscreen I t was out of context, and it bothered me. Miles away from any sign of civilization, it was the last thing I expected to see as I made my way toward an obscure bend in the Congaree River, my goal for the day. It was early spring, and I had been hiking for several hours through the Congaree Swamp National Park, the last two with no discernible trail under foot. I was relying upon my Magellan Explorist 610 to guide me to a particular spot on the map that had intrigued me. Why the spot interested me, I truly don t know; exclusive of the fact that it looked like a place where no human had ever set foot, and I was channeling Marco Polo on this particular morning. As I made my way through the tangle of vines, roots, and fallen branches that make up the floor of the swamp, my legs were beginning to tire a bit; and the bottom of my left foot was reminding me of a childhood encounter with a brown recluse. I must admit that it was a relief when I finally broke through the undergrowth to the welcoming sunshine of the river s edge. It was indeed a beautiful place. The river rolled away around a bend shimmering in the late morning sunshine, a light breeze carried the sweet smell of wisteria my way from somewhere deep in the forest, and the soft sand of the shore was inviting me to have a seat. I accepted the invitation and reveled for a time in the peace and quiet of the place. The enchanting feeling of being That question ran laps in my mind as I made my way back to the trailhead that afternoon. What would I leave behind? totally separate from the rest of the world enveloped me as I watched a red tailed hawk come to rest in the high branches of a cypress tree on the opposite shore. The quiet was soon shattered, however by the raucous cries of a flock of crows as they attempted to dislodge the hawk from his perch. There appeared to be no malice in their efforts, just a way to fight off midday boredom, I suppose. Eventually though the hawk tired of their games and took to the air gliding effortlessly down the center of the river toward the aforementioned bend and disappearing into the mist. April 2016 As my eyes followed his progress I noticed a glimmer on the shore, well actually back from the shore in the woods about a quarter mile down river from my location. Bored with resting, I arose and walked through the woods to where I estimated the glimmer originated; and much to my surprise, I discovered the windscreen from a Model T Ford leaning against a tree. It was a deep brown from decades of weather and rust. It was hopelessly entangled by years of vine growth, and upon further examination, I noticed that the tree itself had grown around the bottom crosspiece, cracking the glass and forever locking that windshield in time and space. For reasons unknown to me at the time, the presence of that windscreen bothered me. Oh, it was a fascination to me to be sure, but it had invaded my (Continued on page 2)

2 PAGE 2 BEULAH NEWS Reflections on a Windscreen (cont.) (Continued from page 1) fanciful idea of being the first to enter this primeval forest. In so doing, it had reminded me that time and space are simply borrowed. It reminded me that we as human beings are living out our lives on a timeline that will eventually end. It left me asking, I wonder who owned that Ford and if that old windscreen is all that was left behind to indicate that he or she walked the planet. I tend to get a little bit morose when my fanciful daydreams are disturbed. Morose or not, it forced me to ask myself what will be left behind after I depart. In years to come will some young man happen upon an old silver bullet of a camper, windows broken, tires flat, grown over with vines, hidden in the woods for decades and ask the same question of me? That question ran laps in my mind as I made my way back to the trailhead that afternoon. What would I leave behind? What legacy would define who I was and /or am to those who follow? Over above that I was forced to ask myself, is my name, or my legacy of any importance whatsoever in the scheme of things? Upon reflection I had to conclude that no, my legacy is of little importance. The name of Anthony S. Rowell will be remembered by a pitiful few when I leave this earth. With that understood, I know without a doubt that while my legacy is of little importance, the legacy of Christ and what I can contribute to that legacy is of vast importance. For while my name will be but a fleeting memory to most, the name of Jesus Christ will live forever. With that in mind I pray that my life adds to the legacy of Christ first and foremost, for there can be no greater calling, no greater purpose, and no greater legacy than that; and I pray the same for you. Tony Rowell Star Member Fellowship Friends will list in the bulletin each month one or more Star Members. A star member is anyone over 65, a nursing home member or a home bound member. 5 Outreach Ministry News BEULAH NEWS PAGE 5 At our February meeting, it was determined that as part of our ministry we want to help to financially support the Beulah Mission team headed by Pastor Tony. We have scheduled 3 fundraisers that all are asked to help support: April 30, 4-7p.m. - Chicken Bog (prepared by Carey Smith) Cost is $9.00 for adults, $5.00 for children. May - Youth Bake Sale - All youth groups are being asked to participate by baking or working the sale. Hope Binkley has graciously agreed to head this up. Date and details will be forthcoming. June - Krispy Kreme Donut sale, donut pick-up will be June 5 th. It will be through your participation and generosity of these fundraisers that we can spread God s love and be ambassadors for Christ! Continue to pray for the success of our Beulah Mission Team. New Name for Thursday Night Ladies Group The new name for the Thursday night ladies group (formerly UMW) is the Women s Group of Beulah (WGOB). Working together, we have decided on this Purpose: The Women s Group of Beulah is a fellowship of ladies whose purpose is to spiritually support themselves and other women & children while sharing and embracing the love of Christ throughout our community. The WGOB will meet each 3 rd Thursday of the month at 6:00pm in the Social Hall. We will continue our support of meals to Samaritan s Well Women s Shelter each 4 th Thursday of the month. The meals are very much appreciated by the shelter. Thanks to all of you who have participated in this mission! If you would like to prepare a dish for the meal, your generosity is always welcome! An upcoming event will be an Art Glass class where we will make trinkets made of glass! This will be just a fun event for women to fellowship together and get to know one another. Date, time, and specifics coming soon! Fit to be Fruitful I am in Christ: created anew, made a branch of the Vine, fitted for fruit-bearing. Would that believers would cease looking at their old nature and complaining of their weakness, as if God called them for what they were unfitted for! Would that they would believingly and joyfully accept the wondrous revelation of how God, in uniting them to Christ, has made himself chargeable for their spiritual growth and fruitfulness! How all sickly hesitancy and sloth would disappear, and under the influence of this motive the faith in the faithfulness of him whom they are in Christ their whole nature would rise to accept and fulfill their glorious destiny! Andrew Murray, Abide in Christ

6 PAGE 6 BEULAH NEWS 2016 Before Service Greeters For The Traditional Service At their last meeting, the Traditional Worship Committee decided to ask the Council Members and Administrative Team Members to serve as the Before Service Greeters. We will discontinue the After Service Greeters. If your name is listed below and you cannot serve, please let Melba Smith ( ) or Karolyn Grimm ( ) know. Also, if your name is not listed below and you would like to serve as a greeter, let them know also. You do not have to be on a committee to serve. As greeters you need to be in the narthex at 10:15 a.m. The bulletins are on the center table in the narthex. Please greet everyone with a smile and hand them a bulletin. Being a greeter is an excellent way to get to know members of our congregation. 10 PAGE 10 BEULAH NEWS Great Need for Health Kits As some of you may remember, early last year we asked for monetary donations to purchase Birthing Kits for UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). We had such an awesome response from you all that we have as an Outreach Committee to support this project again; however, instead of doing the Birthing Kits we are going to do the Health Kits as they are in great need of these since most of these kits were handed out late last year during all of the flooding. We are asking for monetary donations for these kits. If you would like to buy the items and put the kits together yourself or as a small group all we ask is that you follow the instructions below. We will have a place TBA for you all to put those kits if you decide to put them together yourself. Thank you so much for your support of this outreach project. If you have any questions, please contact Tonya or via at jtgos4@outlook.com. If you would like to know more about this project or more about UMCOR please visit lief-supplies/relief-supply- Kits/Health. Health Kit Materials 1 hand towel 15 x 25 inches to 17 x 27 inches; Kitchen, cleaning, and microfiber towels not acceptable. 1 washcloth Tau Rho 1 comb Comb needs to be sturdy and longer than 6 inches long; No pocket combs or picks please; Rattail combs and combs without handles are acceptable with a minimum of 6 inches of teeth. 1 metal nail file or nail clippers No emery boards, please. 1 bath-size soap 3 oz. and larger sizes only; No Ivory or Jergens soap due to moisture content; Do not remove from original packaging. 1 toothbrush Adult size only; Do not remove from original packaging. 6 adhesive bandages ¾ inch to 1 inch-size; Common household Band-Aids. 1 plastic bag One-gallon size sealable bag only. $1.00 to purchase toothpaste Assembly Directions Set the $1.00 for toothpaste aside to be included in a separate envelope. Lay out the hand towel flat on a table. Lay the washcloth flat in the center of the hand towel. Place all remaining items on top of the washcloth. Fold over the sides of the hand towel to cover all of the items. Fold over one end of the hand towel so that it covers all of the items. Grasp the bundle of items tightly and roll over the remainder of the hand towel tightly. Place the tightly rolled bundle in the plastic bag. Remove as much air as possible and seal the bag. Important Notes All items must be new. Do not wash any of the items as they will be considered used. Please remove all packaging, unless otherwise specified. All emergency kits are carefully planned to make them usable in the greatest number of situations. Since strict rules often govern product entry into international countries, it is important that kits contain only the requested items, nothing more. Do not include any personal notes, money, or additional material in the kits. These things must be painstakingly removed and will delay the shipment. UMCOR is now purchasing toothpaste in bulk to be added to health kits before shipping to ensure that the product does not expire before they are sent. Do not put single dollar bills in each kit. Collect all money for toothpaste and shipping, then place it in a separate envelope and send along with the kit donations. The symbol of salvation is composed of the Greek letters tau (T) and rho (P). It was first used in ancient New Testament manuscripts as an abbreviation for the Greek word for "cross." The symbol also seems to visually represent Jesus on the cross.
