I could recite a litany of all the mishaps and disasters. I knew I needed a lifeline by 10 a.m., so I phoned a friend, my sister, who is a Daughter of Charity and a powerful pray-er. I had just shared (spilled) coffee with someone in a failed work meeting, so I sat in my car in the Starbucks parking lot as Sister Julie prayed with me and gave me a pep talk. I breathed in God s grace more in faith than in feeling and hung up. I felt better. Backing out, hopeful for a better remainder of the day, WHAM! I backed into a woman backing into me. What? Are you kidding? I got out and headed to her car. I can t believe that just happened! I said. Words of incredulity poured from me. She sat silent in the driver s seat, writing out her contact and insurance information. Following her example, I fell silent and wrote out mine. When she tore the paper out of her pad, and I gave her my page, I said, I notice you have a rosary hanging from your mirror. Are you a Catholic? Several others things also hung there. She hesitated. Was it because she wasn t sure how to answer the question? Was she having a crisis of faith? She finally said, Yes. I m a Catholic too, I replied. Tears began to run down her cheeks. I had breast cancer surgery last week, she said. Can I pray for you? I asked. She nodded, so I put my hand on her shoulder and began the most impassioned, heartfelt, storm-heaven kind of prayer I could think of. I guess I was feeling mad at God that this woman was getting hit with cancer, and hit by me, and I started to demand miracles for her. Now this was not the first time I ve prayed over someone. And sometimes, I can feel a person cringing under my hand on their shoulder, as if they can t wait for me to stop. But this woman reached up, gripped my hand, and held it there. I don t know if my prayer was too long or too short. Whatever it was, it was full of faith. And when I finished, she thanked me. I will pray for you all day, I said and meant it. And then she hugged me. Have nice holidays, she said as we parted. As I walked to my car, I looked at the paper with her name and insurance information. Preprinted at the top was: Rejoice in the Lord always; again, I say: Rejoice! Philippians 4:4. What just happened to me? Did I run into an angel? She wished me happy holidays? That accident was a few weeks ago, and still I pray for the woman in the other car. I ve asked friends and family to pray for her too. God, bring good out of this, I pray. It s no accident you ran into her, a friend said. I laughed out loud. With God, nothing is mere coincidence. What holy incidents and happy accidents have occurred to you? Loretta Pehanich From IgnatianSpirituality.com reprinted with permission from the author Confession Is Good for the Soul We have a couple of opportunities for you to unburden your soul in the Sacrament of Reconciliation (aka. Penance or Confession.) Along with our year-round offering on Saturdays from 4-5pm, during the season of Lent we have added Wednesdays from 6-8pm.
2 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, As a Holy Family community, we are not only looking out for the well being of the parish, but also for the school. The success of our school also means success for our parish and vice versa. One of our goals is to provide the best education that is embedded in faith, love, knowledge, and service to our children. In order to do so, we need to continue building our resources to carry out such a mission. Enchanted Evening is Holy Family School s largest fundraising event. It is a tradition that goes back many years and continued this year on March 4 th, 2017 at the Biltmore Hotel, in Santa Clara. Enchanted Evening is a dinner, auction, and dance where parents, parishioners, teachers, staff, and friends of Holy Family come together to strengthen the fellowship and support our Holy Family School. Aileen Styczynski serves as Chair. Enchanted Evening s funds raised help to support implementation of new programs, the purchase of school materials, and the refurbishment of facilities, including technology infrastructure, all of which provide the students the best in modern, quality education. With about 201 guests and raising about $48,000, this year s Enchanted Evening was a great success. We could not have done it without the love and support of our parent volunteers; the generous donations from businesses in our area, and of course our Holy Family community. I am very grateful to Ms. Bridgit McGary, our school principal and Aileen Styczynski for their leadership as well as to countless volunteers who made our school s Enchanted Evening a success with their tremendous sacrifice and hard work. May God continue to bless the Enchanted team as well as our school and parish. For those who have not experienced the event, I highly encourage participating next year. Likewise, for those who have attended, do continue to support this wonderful and meaningful event, which is a significant component that brings sustainability to our school and community. Let us look forward to next year s Enchanted Evening. God bless, Fr. Andrew Vu Nguyen Holy Family School News Holy Family School is currently accepting applications for all grade levels. The deadline to register is March 20 th. forms/81bxvclnww1zd1bd3 Small Things Count Spring starts tomorrow. Soon the itch to clean will appear as a rash on your psyche. This year, do your Spring cleaning the Earth-friendly way. First, choose your cleaning products. Avoid toxic ones that are corrosive, harmful to your skin, or flammable. Buy those with labels that say they re eco-friendly or biodegradable. Or go to the Faith in Action literature rack in the vestibule for a copy of Homemade Cleaners and make them yourself. Next, reuse some of your trash. Bits of old clothing make good rags; other items might help people directly or indirectly via local thrift shops. What s left over, recycle like batteries and light bulbs at Lowes, paint at Kelly-Moore and home-improvement stores, metal at a local recycler, and electronics at often-held school fundraisers. And, of course, use your imagination to reuse: pieces of broken plates make colorful ground-cover and an unwanted picture frame can be turned into an earring-holder. In short, think Pinterest, not garbage can. And have some fun in the process, because that enthusiasm to clean will fade quickly. Call Jackie O Donnell at or write c/o Holy Family. Play Is Important to Development Holy Family School is so fortunate to have Mrs. Erica Davied, our Occupational Therapist (OT), on our school campus. When asking the primary and elementary students which is their favorite classroom on campus, there is always a resounding cheer for the OT Room. Mrs. Davied s engaging and enthusiastic demeanor certainly creates a welcoming environment, but the toys students get to use when spending time in her room, quickly reinforces why it is a happening place. One visit to the room and you completely understand why students are hooked into playing. Occupational Therapy is an ongoing process of understanding how one uses their body in everyday activities. Mrs. Davied works with our Preschool through 2nd grade classes in developing and strengthening their nervous system, which includes sensory awareness, sensory motor, perceptual motor and cognition. In addition, students who have been evaluated for more therapeutic services are afforded the therapy at a reasonable cost to the families. From rolling down the ramp, to jumping on the trampoline, to writing on a table covered in shaving cream, the students LOVE their time with Mrs. Davied. We are so blessed to have her at our school. She is a key contributor within the educational team at Holy Family School. Why not get them at VBC! We have lots of opportunities for you to help out! Liturgy Link Bowing...continued... The first time in the Mass that we bow together, as an assembly is when the book of the Gospels is raised and shown to us. Before the Priest or Deacon touches the book of the Gospels, you will see them make a profound bow to the book of the Gospels. After picking it up, most Priests, in most churches, will then present the book of the Gospels to the assembly and raise the book high. When the book of the Gospels is presented, what one should do is make a bow of the head as it is raised. In our Parish, our Priests show it to the different sections, so you should bow only when it is shown to your section. We are acknowledging, by our gesture of reverence, that this is Jesus who is the Word. Praise to you, Lord Jesus!
