When you hear this word, do you hear Gimme money or the more accurate be responsible? Are you tempted to close your ears? If so, it s time to take another look, for being a good steward simply means living a more Christian life. Pope Francis tells us, The Beatitudes are a program for life offered to us by Jesus: it is both so simple and so difficult. We can be good stewards by following the Beatitudes! I had found a stumbling block in the common English translation Blessed are because I envisioned them applying to people sitting with halos on their heads. But then I learned that in the original Aramaic, those two words actually mean Get going! Do something! Imagine yourself on a hillside in Galilee. The climate of Galilee is Mediterranean--much like that of San Jose. You are on a bowl-shaped hillside, a natural arena, with hundreds of others. The breeze coming off the sea behind the Master carries His words up the hillside. Listen as Jesus calls you to action, right where you are now, in your life and in your relationships. 1. Rise up! Do not be afraid, but put your trust in the Lord. The Kingdom of God belongs to those who understand that God is faithful to His people. ("Poor in spirit" is better translated as "trusting in God.") 2. Let go of barriers and stop pretending that you can handle anything, no matter how large. Acknowledge your pain and allow yourself to mourn. God brings comfort to those who will accept it. 3. Open your eyes. Look at the gifts you have been given and the wonders that God has provided. Those who find beauty in God's gifts will fully experience the world we live in. (Being meek does not mean I am nothing ; it means accepting yourself as a wonderful creation of God, with all your talents and challenges. It also means celebrating others as well as the world around as beautiful creations of God.) (to be continued next week) On Wednesdays during Lent from 6-8pm, the doors of Holy Family Church are open and the Light is on For You! Bring a family member or friend, come in, and rediscover God s heart of mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation in this Year of Mercy. Jesus Christ desires to lift your burdens off your heart which you may have been carrying for a short time or years. There will also be Adoration during this time. To find guides to confession and testimonials of people from around our diocese visit

2 Eucharis c Adora on Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Lent is a season of abstinence and returning to our Lord through fasting, praying, and almsgiving. Lent began on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 10th, and ends on Holy Saturday. By Church discipline, Catholic Christians are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and omit meat every Friday during Lent. As for fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, only adults (18-65) are bound to this. Those who are 14 and older are also required to abstain from meat every Friday during Lent, with the exception to those who are ill. Many may ask why we abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent? It is one way we commemorate the Passion and death of Our Savior Jesus Christ. Also, the question of why meat? can be puzzling to some. There are documents to indicate that meat was singled out as being a food Christians occasionally abstained from since the first century. Meat was singled out because it was associated with celebrations and feast. Seemingly, there has been a slight cultural shift over the years with more and more people eating a more vegetarian diet. However, most people still base the food they eat during celebrations around a meat entrée. In essence, a day devoted to remembering Christ s Passion should not be a day to feast. Again, abstaining is a discipline of the Church. Abstaining from meat will not make a person closer to God without good intent. However, having a posture of obedience to the Church that Christ established will. This happens to be what the Church asks us to do. If the Church changed the discipline and told us to eat meat on all Fridays during Lent, then obedience to that discipline would help us grow. Why? Because as sinners, we like to take the rebellious pose. We like to do it our way. It is hard for us to be told what to do, and yet, to submit is to place our lives in God s hands. Therefore, obedience is the way that will help us be more humble and return to God s love in the spirit of repentance. Of course, this would go along with prayers and almsgiving to make one s Lenten Season all the more spiritual and be immersed in God s love. Have a blessed Lenten Season! Fr. 4 ALPHA IS COMING We are all commissioned through Baptism to share our faith with the whole world. Every time we go to Mass we are sent out to bring the message of God s love and the Good News of repentance and salvation to all we meet. Alpha is a tool whereby we can help to build the Kingdom of God. Alpha helps clarify what we believe about Jesus and equips us to share it with others. Alpha brings out the truth that Jesus loves all of us and wants us in his forever Kingdom. The Alpha course is designed to deepen our personal relationship with Jesus, address the difficult questions of life, and inspire us to grow in Faith, Truth and Service. If you want to strengthen your faith, come to Alpha for an opportunity to know Jesus in a deeper, more profound way! Alpha participants meet weekly for ten weeks to share an informal meal, listen to a series of talks and then have small group discussions on such topics as Who is Jesus?, How Can I Be Sure of My Faith, and Why and How Should I Read the Bible? There is a retreat weekend at the end of the course focused on the Holy Spirit! The Holy Family Alpha Course starts on Wednesday, March 30, 3016, at 6:30 pm in the Community Center with an introductory, complimentary dinner included. For more information or reservations for dinner contact: Alicia Marin Morales: cell: ; am49ers@sbcglobal.net. Scripture Studies Monday mornings (10 am - noon) Youth Hall. Some parishioners have questioned what it means to repave or revamp the parking lot. Hopefully this article will help clarify some of those questions. Although the parking lot was completed in 2004, which doesn t seem that long ago, there is periodic maintenance required to maintain the integrity. Without the regular maintenance you will notice cracks, and the asphalt could deteriorate and crumble. If we put off the maintenance for too long, it becomes more costly. Our parking lot is due to be resealed or resurfaced. Last summer a generous parishioner donated labor and materials, addressing all the cracks which allowed us to put off the resealing until this summer The plan is to reseal the entire lot during the school summer break, we are not planning to make any parking lot changes.
