1 The Challenger The true meaning of Love Christ died for us. (John 3:16) FBC FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, HARRISON SEPTEMBER, 2014 VOL. 59 NO. 9 Coming September 6 & 7 Author Bill Peel Bill Peel is founding Executive Director of The Center for Faith & Work at LeTourneau University. His passion is to help people close the gap between Sunday faith and Monday work. For 30 years, he has coached thousands of men and women to understand their calling and grasp their work s importance to God. Bill is an award-winning author/co-author of seven books (in multiple languages) including Workplace Grace, What God Does When Men Lead, and Discover Your Destiny. With his friend Dr. Walt Larimore, Bill co-wrote the continuing medical education course, Saline Solution, and has taught healthcare professionals worldwide to effectively speak about faith issues with their patients. The next generation of this highly acclaimed course, now Grace Prescriptions, is being released in Bill holds degrees from Southern Methodist University and Dallas Theological Seminary. He is currently pursuing doctoral studies at Gordon-Conwell Seminary. This study by authors Bill Peel and Walt Larimore teaches us how to take evangelism out of the religious box and weave it into our life at work. Everyday you spend hours in the most high impact mission field in the world your workplace. A place where you are regularly in touch with people facing significant life questions. This study offers a proven model for evangelism that respects the unique relationships you have with your co-workers, clients, or customers. It shows how you can be authentic instead of artificial when sharing what you believe, build trust with even the most skeptical person, and cultivate caring connections with those who have not yet come to a saving faith in Christ. Real Evangelism is a process. learn how to be an influence!

2 THE.ROB.BLOG He was VERY funny but the situation isn t at all. Robin Williams is considered by many to be the best improvisational comedian of our time. (I may have just coined a new word since spell-check is highly perturbed with me right now.) If you ever heard Jonathon Winters (youtube it) you know that Mr. Williams was cut from the same cloth. Saying they both had quick wits is like saying Arkansans are fond of their Razorbacks. Wee bit of an understatement there. We tend to be shocked that someone who lived seemingly to make others laugh could, himself, be so sad. However, many in the people pleasing business mask their depression with humor and at great cost to themselves. There is a long line of funny people who have taken their own lives. When we hear the news of one more (i.e. Robin Williams) we become keenly aware for the moment at least of the struggle some people face. Just being shocked or aware is not enough to help anyone else. It takes a change of attitude especially by God s people. Thom Rainer, the president and CEO of Lifeway recently ran an article about this topic on his site. Surprisingly, the author is the pastor of an Arkansas church. His story, while about ministry in general and pastors specifically offers a real insight into this dilemma of depression. It can be a help to pastor AND people. I want to highlight his piece here. Depression and the Ministry By Mark Dance After pastoring in a fog of clinical depression, I came very close to walking away from my church and the ministry five years ago. I had been pastoring for 22 years at the time, and was burned out and fed up mostly with myself. Thanks to the help of my doctor and therapist, I would learn later what role mental illness had in my decision-making. When I heard about Robin Williams suicide yesterday, my heart began to break for his family and friends. I also began to pray for the many people who struggle with mental illness in secret and isolation especially pastors. Pastors often do this because we have a role to play, expectations to live up to, and people to please. Like Robin Williams, we learn to put on a smile and help others smile as well. Clinical depression is serious, but there are so many other darker levels of depression. Honestly, I have never considered, much less attempted, suicide. But I have had two staff members over the years who have tried. One of whom succeeded this past Spring. If you are a ministry leader who is struggling with ongoing depression, please consider these four suggestions. 1. Seek Professional Help Self-diagnosis is usually a waste of time. My first conversation was with my medical doctor, then a licensed Christian therapist. It was a humbling, but rewarding experience for me. 2. Let Your Church Minister to You The stigma of depression, or any weakness, tempts us away from seeking help from those who love us most. I meet monthly with an accountability partner/friend, monthly with a therapist and quarterly with a small group of supportive deacons. Along with my wife, this is my Dance Team. 3. Trust the Lord for Healing Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. Luke 22:31 Satan has a plan for your life, but so does God! Although I don t believe it was God s will for Peter to fail, He obviously knew about and allowed Peter to go through the sifting and refining process so that he could grow in both strength and humility. He would need both later. We know in retrospect that God had big plans for Peter, but we also know that God has plans for our ministries too. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 NIV My prayer is not for them (Apostles) alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me (us). John 17:20 Jesus is still praying for our good and His glory. Praying that our faith would not fail, even when we do. 4. Help Someone Else off the Cliff And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers. Luke 22:32 Several pastors and deacons talked me off of that cliff of ministry suicide five years ago, and I will always be grateful to them. Stepping away from ministry and the church I loved and needed was neither in the best interest of my church, my family or myself. I got a ministry recall and have used it countless times to help other pastors off that same cliff. There are many of us out there considering it. I thought I could leap (or build) tall buildings in a single bound, until I realized that I was a man of flesh, not steel. Fortunately my depression was temporary and treatable, as most are if diagnosed early. I am still at that same church, which is healthier than it has ever been as am I. Depression is not the unpardonable sin so it s time we look at it with more compassion than contempt. That way we mirror the Master and that s a good thing. Your looking on the bright side most of the time pastor, Rob

3 What s happening in FBCH Student Ministry? August, aka Back 2 School Month, was the ending of our summer activities and the beginning of our normal student ministry routine. We had an End of the Year Bash with over 40 students having a great time with all the activities our interns had planned. The youth also had a Back 2 School lake day at Bull Shoals Lake on August 15 th. On September 19 th we will be having a 5 th Quarter Party after the Goblin football game. This is a safe and fun way for students to hang-out and have a good time after the football game. There will be activities, music, and possibly a guest speaker. A couple churches in Harrison are partnering together to put this on. Below is our St. Louis Mission Project group picture. ROC Ministry VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!! They work each week to minister to their classes and teach them God s Word. Please tell your Bible Study Teacher how thankful you are for all they do! Lance Read, Interim Associate Pastor, Adult Education and Media Secret Servant: Randy Brooks For the past ten years, Randy Brooks with the help of his parents, Jerry and Ada Brooks, have stayed late each Sunday morning to go around the sanctuary picking up left over trash, bulletins, and other items left behind to make sure that Rick Rhodes, Jerry Clark, and Ron Pittman s job is easier on Monday morning. Randy has always been a person who did not like to see people throw trash on the ground. His Dad, Jerry, has a container in the back of his car where they collect all the trash Randy sees or can get and puts it in there so they can throw it away when they get home. Randy is the type of Servant that may go unnoticed like many others in the church because people may not see what he does behind the scenes. He is truly a blessing. In addition, to picking up trash in the sanctuary, Randy has for the past 10 years put the name tags on and off the lanyards for Adventure Club campers and staff and helped with name tags, coloring fish and filling candy bags for the Pumpkin Patch Party. Regardless of Randy s disability, he is using his talents to serve the Lord and we are thankful for him and his love for God and our church. He is our Secret Servant. Thanks Randy, Dave Hart and FBCH

6 2014 Dixie Jackson Offering and Prayer Focus for State Missions September 8, 10, 12 1:00 p.m. Room 203 God multiplies everything we give to Him. We see this in many ways... like the boy who gave his lunch of five barley loaves and two fishes. Jesus took the loaves and fishes and fed 5000 men plus their families. (John 6:1-14) The Dixie Jackson Arkansas Missions Offering and Week of Prayer give us a direct avenue to multiply the impact on winning the lost for Christ across our state. The Dixie Jackson Offering funds many ministries in Arkansas which include: starting new churches, disaster relief, community ministries, crisis pregnancy services, chaplaincy, addiction recovery, inclusion ministry, ethnic church starting/strengthening, and conferences for equipping church members for ministry. Whatever I Have, Whatever He Wants: My time, My treasure, My talents. Let s be active for Christ surrendering all we have to serve Him in Arkansas and the world. Parents: Kendall & Betsy Johnson Dear Church Family: I want to thank you all for all the wonderful cards, flowers, food and prayers that you gave us during the loss of my father-in-law, Thomas W. Rosson. No one is ever prepared for such a loss and it brought so much comfort to know that we have an army of prayer warriors praying for our family. On the day of his death, he told our family he was going to get a new pair of legs that day. For the past year he has struggled with walking and when he broke his hip in May, things started to take a turn for the worse. He struggled back in rehab for two months and was on the mend, but pneumonia set in his last week. His body was just too weak to recover. It gives us peace and comfort to know that now he is walking all over heaven in his new pair of legs. Thank you again for praying for my family. We love our church family and feel so blessed to know we can always count on you. Respectfully, Brent Rosson Family WITH SYMPATHY Extended to Dee Lange and Family on the passing of her father and to Alex Laney on the passing of her grandfather, Benjamin Qualls, of Dover, Arkansas. Extended to Brent Rosson, Sr. and Family on the passing of his father, Thomas Rosson of Harrison, Arkansas.
