St. Paul s Episcopal Church Chittenango, New York The Good News Volume 6 Issue 4 July / August 2010 OUR MISSION Summer s Song STATEMENT St. Paul s Episcopal Church in Chittenango, New York exists for the purpose of glorifying God, proclaiming the Gospel and Serving others in His Name, in this community and around the world by the grace and power of the Holy Spirit. We gather together to joyfully celebrate the sacraments, encourage inquiring hearts and minds and share life s joys and sorrows. Inside this issue: Unique Worship Opportunities 2 Liturgy Notes 3 Musings 4 Tantalizing Tid-bits 5 Parish People News 6 Birthdays & Anniversaries A Conversation with God Summer Trips 10 Dear People of St. Paul s, Today it is hot! Summer has come. The pace of life in summer is different. Our thoughts wander to vacations, or family reunions, or reading that long novel you have saved for the long days of summer. There is always a drop in attendance here in church giving evidence of travel and special excursions. Wherever you wander this summer, my wish for you is that you find peace and joy and rest. In that spirit, I offer you a modern day psalm on this theme. A Psalm of Summer s Siren I salute you, God of rest and vacations, who laid down the law that every seventh day must be free. No work for beast, man or woman was your legal word. On this summer day, when my heart longs for leisure, my head tells me, It s time to go to work. I wish I had an extra Sabbath to enjoy your gift of liberty and peace. Part of me is so grown-up, and knows how to be productive, to be responsible and to achieve. I have learned to listen to that inner adult and how to successfully silence the echoes of childhood s play. I may know and possess more, but I ve lost something in being a repeat offender, O God, in breaking your law of seventh day vacations, I have forgotten how to vacate my work, to come out of my head and go out-of-doors, To play with you in the summer sun. Faithfully,
Unique Worship Opportunities PAGE 2 Mass on the Grass and Parish Picnic Sunday, July 11 9:00 am In celebration of the green that surrounds us we will have one worship service at 9:00 with the youth of the parish involved throughout the liturgy. We will have folding chairs from the parish hall, but urge you to bring lawn chairs for extra comfort during worship. Following the service we will have our picnic right here on the St. Paul s grounds. Please bring a dish to pass, your own place setting and any beverages you want. We will have the usual coffee hour offerings. Please come dressed casually this Sunday. God will surely recognize us in shorts as well as in our Sunday best. Come! Pray and play in Christian fellowship! Third Thursday July 15 and August 19 7:00 pm Sponsored by St. Paul s Cathedral, Syracuse, NY During the summer this worship service may meet outside if weather allows. There will be an announcement about the location during the week prior to the service. This jazz mass setting is wonderful music and gives a different and interesting flavor to the Eucharistic prayers. Community July 21-7:00 pm The next Healing Service will be Wednesday, July 21 here at St. Paul s. This is an opportunity to reach out to friends or family members who might be in need of healing prayers and invite them to come with you to this worship. We will offer the laying on of hands and anointing with sacred oil, a tradition continued from our Judeo-Christian roots.
Liturgy Notes PAGE 3 (Beginning in this issue, I will plan to offer some background information on various aspects of our worship services. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about any information in these articles. Kathlyn+ ) Enriching Our Worship I Prayer Book Supplement In 1789, the fledgling Episcopal Church, meeting in Philadelphia, adopted the first American Book of Common Prayer. Explaining its departure in certain respects from the BCP of the Church of England, its preface observes that: It is a most invaluable part of that blessed liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, that in his worship different forms and usages may without offense be allowed, provided the substance of the Faith be kept entire therefore, by common consent and authority, may be altered, abridged, enlarged, amended, or otherwise disposed of, as may seem most convenient for the edification of the people, according to the various exigency of times and occasions. Supplemental Liturgical Materials prepared by the Standing Liturgical Commission 1997 Enriching Our Worship is not intended to supplant the Book of Common Prayer, but rather to provide additional resources to assist worshiping communities wishing to expand the language, images and metaphors used in worship Expanding our vocabulary of prayer and the ways in which we name the Holy One bear witness to the fact that the mystery of God transcends all categories of knowing, including those of masculine and feminine. At all points along the way in the process of selection and development of texts the question has been asked: Is this text consistent with the Trinitarian and Christological formulations which we, as Anglicans, regard as normative and the ground of our common prayer? (excerpts from EOW 1, Preface pp. 5-7) The Eight Degrees of Charity Maimonides, a 12th century Jewish philosopher 1. He who gives to the poor, but with bad grace. 2. He who gives with a good grace, but not enough. 3. He who gives enough, but only after being asked. 4. He who gives without being asked. 5. He who gives without knowing who will benefit from his gift. 6. He who gives without the beneficiary of the gift knowing who is helping him. 7. He who gives without knowing the beneficiary and without the beneficiary knowing him. 8. He who fights poverty by giving to the poor man the means to escape from his condition.
Mother s Musings PAGE 4 I am excited about the call to be Rector of St. Paul s parish. In some ways, this is not a change in what you see me do. However, it is a different role to be Rector rather than Priest-in-charge with focus on the transitional tasks that are necessary in a time of change. Now, we are free to settle down to long-term work and projects and to cast our eyes and our hopes far into the future in a new way. VISIONING I am working with the Vestry on the vision, mission and direction for this parish. Our base line is taken from the Book of Common Prayer, page 855. The mission of the Church is to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ. We will use this and the promises we make at Baptism to set our direction. But more importantly, to use as the measure against which we determine what we do, how we do it and how we are living into that mission through all we do as a church from worship to planning to housekeeping. Many philosophers weigh in on vision. Here are a couple of quotations that help answer the question of why we define vision. George Washington Carver Where there is no vision, there is no hope. Helen Keller It is a terrible thing to see and have no vision. COMMUNICATION The Vestry has set communication as a major priority. Having said that, there is no single way to communicate effectively. We will continue to produce the newsletter every other month as our primary communication tool. There is a master calendar in the parish hall as well as posted on our parish web site. The Altar Ministry schedule is also printed and posted online. We will utilize periodic updates between newsletters to share announcements that are made on Sunday mornings. If you do not have or use regularly, let us know so that we can make sure you are receiving the same information in another format. Asking questions of the person involved is still an excellent backup plan. SUMMER SCHEDULE Sunday worship will continue on our usual schedule of 8 and 9:30 and the question of single service or two in the summer will be re-evaluated at the end of summer. Please join us when you can. Please let Mother Kathlyn know if you have questions about worship or suggestions for creative worship ideas that might enrich our worship experience. STONEHEDGE EDG Worship at Stonehedge Rehabilitation Center will be July 25 at 2:30 PM. I invite you to join with us in this rewarding ministry to our neighbors who are unable to get out for worship services. CHILDREN S WORSHIP BAGS A wish list note: we would appreciate a volunteer to clean and refurbish the children s worship bags for various ages for summer!
Tantalizing Tid Tid-bits PAGE 5 Outreach St Paul's provided lunch for the Habitat workers in May, and sold raffle tickets to help with their continued fund raising efforts. The home in Chittenango is very close to completion and it is hoped that the family can take occupancy this sometime this summer. It was an exciting and fun filled OZ event. Our float sported several of our youth who had a great time tossing candy to the crowds. There were a lot of visitors to the church; the booths both at the church and in the park were very successful. Cudos to all who participated that day and behind the scenes with preparations! The committee has started making plans for the upcoming Children's Carnival which will take place in August this year. St Paul's will also be supporting Vacation Bible School the last week of June. It promises to be a busy event filled year. Anyone who wishes to work with the Outreach Commission is welcome. Contact Tania Mousaw, , so we can be sure you get notice of any of our meetings. 8 PAGE 8 The Lord s Prayer A Conversation with God A fresh look at the Lord s Prayer often read as a dialogue at youth retreats. God s response is in RED and italics. Our Father Who Art In Heaven. Yes? Don't interrupt me. I'm praying. But -- you called ME! Called you? No, I didn't call you. I'm praying. Our Father who art in Heaven. There -- you did it again! Did what? Called ME. You said, "Our Father who art in Heaven" Well, here I am. What's on your mind? But I didn't mean anything by it. I was, you know, just saying my prayers for the day. I always say the Lord's Prayer. It makes me feel good, kind of like fulfilling a duty. Well, all right. Go on. Okay, Hallowed be thy name. Hold it right there. What do you mean by that? By what? By "Hallowed be thy name? It means, it means.. good grief, I don't know what it means. How in the world should I know? It's just a part of the prayer. By the way, what does it mean? It means honored, holy, wonderful. Hey, that makes sense. I never thought about what 'hallowed' meant before. Thanks. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done,on earth as it is in Heaven. Do you really mean that? Sure, why not? What are you doing about it? Doing? Why, nothing, I guess. I just think it would be kind of neat if you got control, of everything down here like you have up there. We're kinda in a mess down here you know. Yes, I know; but, have I got control of you? Well, I go to church. That isn't what I asked you. What about your bad temper? You've really got a problem there, you know. And then there's the way you spend your money -- all on yourself. And what about the kind of books you read? Now hold on just a minute! Stop picking on me! I'm just as good as some of the rest of those People at church! Excuse ME. I thought you were praying for my will to be done. If that is to happen, it will have to start with the ones who are praying for it. Like you -- for example... Oh, all right. I guess I do have some hang-ups. Now that you mention it, I could probably name some others. So could I. I haven't thought about it very much until now, but I really would like to cut out some of those things. I would like to, you know, be really free. Good. Now we're getting somewhere. We'll work together -- You and ME. I'm proud of You. Look, Lord, if you don't mind, I need to finish up here. This is taking a lot longer than it usually does. Give us this day, our daily bread. You need to cut out the bread. You're overweight as it is. Hey, wait a minute! What is this? Here I was doing my religious duty, and all of a sudden you break in and remind me of all my hang-ups. Praying is a dangerous thing. You just might get what you ask for. Remember, you called ME -- and here I am. It's too late to stop now. Keep praying. (. pause.. ) Well, go on.
Conversation with God...cont. PAGE 9 I'm scared to. Scared? Of what? I know what you'll say. Try ME. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. What about Ann? See? I knew it! I knew you would bring her up! Why, Lord, she's told lies about me, spread stories. She never paid back the money she owes me. I've sworn to get even with her! But -- your prayer -- What about your prayer? I didn't -- mean it. Well, at least you're honest. But, it's quite a load carrying around all that bitterness and resentment isn't it? Yes, but I'll feel better as soon as I get even with her. Boy, have I got some plans for her. She'll wish she had never been born. No, you won't feel any better. You'll feel worse. Revenge isn't sweet. You know how unhappy you are -- Well, I can change that. You can? How? Forgive Ann. Then, I'll forgive you; And the hate and the sin, will be Ann's problem -- not yours. You will have settled the problem as far as you are concerned. Oh, you know, you're right. You always are. And more than I want revenge, I want to be right with You.. (sigh). All right all right... I forgive her. There now! Wonderful! How do you feel? Hmmmm. Well, not bad. Not bad at all! In fact, I feel pretty great! You know, I don't think I'll go to bed uptight tonight. I haven't been getting much rest, you know. Yeah, I know. But, you're not through with your prayer are you? Go on. Oh, all right. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Good! Good! I'll do that. Just don't put yourself in a place where you can be tempted. What do you mean by that? You know what I mean. Yeah. I know. Okay. Go ahead. Finish your prayer. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. Do you know what would bring me glory -- What would really make me happy? No, but I'd like to know. I want to please you now. I've really made a mess of things. I want to truly follow you. I can see now how great that would be. So, tell me... How do I make you happy? YOU just did. ST. 10 Summer: Trips, Recreation and Projects PAGE 10 Once again, in the fall newsletter we would like to print what we did during the summer, how we re- created ourselves, where we traveled on vacation, our most fun times. Please contact the editor to share your plans and news. Some of us have already been to interesting places Bob & Roberta Kincaid on a european Rhine River Cruise : We had a wonderful time on our trip. We saw many beautiful cathedrals. The workmanship in them is amazing. Many of them took hundreds of years to build. We saw a statue of the Madonna by Michelangelo. The cruise on the River Rhine was beautiful. The castles on the hills were all different. We actually visited two castles. Doug & Darryl Tarbell on a tour of several western states: We traveled by tour bus from South Dakota, to Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and ended in Utah. We went on a buffalo safari in Custer State Park, rode horseback, visited Crazy Horse and Mt. Rushmore, spent 2 days in Yellowstone where we saw grizzlies, buffalo, black bear, moose, coyotes and more, and of course Old Faithful. We took a float trip down the Snake River in the Grand Teton Mts. where we saw nesting eagles and pelicans. The trip ended in Salt Lake City where we attended an organ recital at the Mormon Tabernacle. We also visited the Episcopal Chapel of the Transfiguration in Grand Teton National Park. It is a tiny chapel built in 1925, with the mountains in the background, that still has Sunday services in the summer and is the site of numerous weddings. A Summer Project Katherine Weisbrod is setting up a new apartment and could use help with some of the basics. If anyone has some items such as dishes, silverware, towels, cooking utensils and pots and pans, cleaning supplies, furniture items, etc., all the Weisbrods would be grateful. Contact Robin ( )
PAGE 11 Plan to be Prepared! It doesn t cost anything to develop a family emergency plan. Recycle a binder and keep these materials together: A plan to get out of the house in a hurry if you have to. Have rehearsals. A location where family members will meet if they are separated and unable to return home. A family and friends contact sheet. Include an out-of-state person who can help coordinate your family s whereabouts if phone service is off. Copies of essential items: ID cards, credit cards, extra set of house & car keys, insurance & health policies, and cash. A list of medications, medical history, allergies, blood type & other critical info for all household members. Pet info, including photos, vet records, and boarding info. Most emergency shelters do not allow pets. Contact your County Emergency Management Office and ask where you could leave your pet if necessary. Who Do You Have on ICE? If you re a glass half-full type of person, you may be convinced that you ll never need emergency assistance. Let s hope that s true. But just in case it s not, take a moment to put your cell phone on ICE! Anyone who has a cell phone should make sure to have an ICE entry in their contacts list. ICE stands for In Case of Emergency and first responders are trained to look for it if people are injured or ill and cannot speak for themselves. This number should dial the person who can make medical decisions on your behalf. List backup emergency contacts as ICE1, ICE2, etc. To learn more, visit: Behind The Scenes: Priest-in-Charge: Rev.
