3 October 10, 2010 Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three NOTES FROM FATHER BOB TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The wealthy and the privileged non-believer often feels that life owes them that they have a right to whatever they can have or take because of their status or power. The believer sees life differently as the gift of a loving and provident God. It is the difference between grasping at the blessings this life affords or accepting them gratefully from the hands of God. The first reading is a narrative about healing, gratitude, conversion, and worship. It recounts the healing of Naaman, a foreigner who was cleansed of leprosy and converted to Israel s God. Interestingly, the healing takes place not through any direct action on Elisha s part but in obedience to his command to wash in the waters of the Jordan River. The experience moves Naaman to acknowledge Yahweh: Now I know that there is no God in all the earth, except in Israel, and he abandons the worship of other deities. The Gospel parallels the Old Testament narrative in many ways, except that ten lepers are cured by Jesus. The title by which they address him ( Master ) is used only by disciples for Jesus in the Gospels. Jesus tells the men to show themselves to the priests, and they are cleansed on the way. Only one a Samaritan returns to praise God. The second reading is the continuation of Paul s appeal to Timothy begun last Sunday. Paul exhorts Timothy to remember what is at the very heart of the Gospel he proclaimed: that salvation comes through faith in Christ and through loving union with him in the mystery of dying and rebirth. Two strangers (foreigners) teach us an important lesson in today s Scriptures: gratitude. These men are not so focused on their own good fortune so as to forget the author of it. They eagerly return to offer profuse praise for the blessing they have experienced the restoration of their health, and, with it, the restoration of normal social and familial ties. As foreigners, they recognized that they had no claim on the mercy of Israel s God; rather, they accepted all as a gift. Every celebration of the Eucharist, our THANKS-GIVING, ought to make us appreciative of all that we receive from a generous and loving God. PARISH FINANCIAL REPORT FOR FISCAL YEAR You will find included in this week s Canticle a copy of the Financial Report Fiscal Year for your review. This report has been completed through the efforts of our Parish Accounting Office and our Parish Finance Committee. Next weekend the Chairman of our Parish Finance Committee, Dave Smith, and I will speak at all Masses regarding this report. You will also receive a copy of our Parish Stewardship Report. Once again, I would like to thank all of our parishioners for your most generous financial support of our parish mission of Living the Gospel values in our daily lives, community and world. Through your efforts we continue to strive to be committed to providing spiritual nourishment through the worship of God; celebration of the sacraments; Christian education; and use of our time, talents, and treasure in serving others with compassion and love. St. Cletus Parish continues to be a truly Blessed Community of Faith. With Unending Gratitude, Father Bob Pastor

6 Page Six Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 10, 2010 Invest just five minutes a day, and your faith will deepen and grow a day at a time. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2010 TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - Be well Whether Jesus was speaking to a woman who had anointed him in a Pharisee s house, another woman whom he had cured of a hemorrhage, or a leper whom he d cleansed, his closing words were much the same: Your faith has saved you. Believing in Jesus power to heal had opened the door to healing. Some versions of the Bible, though, translate this phrase a little differently: Your faith has made you well. To be saved, then, can mean to be made well, to be made whole, not only in one s own person but in relationships with others, too. In yourself and in your relationships with God and others, what needs healing? TODAY S READINGS: 2 Kings 5:14-17; 2 Timothy 2:8-13; Luke 17:11-19 Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well. MONDAY, OCTOBER 11 COLUMBUS DAY - Take a different route We don t have to have been born in bondage to be a slave to habits and desires, or even to other people our spouse, boss, or children, for example through our unthinking, rote responses to what they say and do. Today we celebrate the day Christopher Columbus arrived in the West Indies. He traveled west to find a new trade route to the east. Along the way he changed the course of world history. Take a page from Columbus book and approach your habitual behavior from a different direction. See what happens. TODAY S READINGS: Galatians 4:22-24, 26-27, 31-5:1; Luke 11:29-32 Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 12 Sorrow, interrupted - I am a man of constant sorrow. So goes the bluegrass song popularized in the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? Many of us have seen our share of sorrow, but few have made a hardand-fast vocation of it. Mary of Nazareth, too, was warned that the sword of sorrow would pierce her heart. Seasons of suffering afflicted her, but they did not deter her from experiencing the joy, light, and glory of others. When faith works through love, the whole spectrum of life finds its balance. Tuesdays are for honoring in rosary-speak the sorrowful mysteries of life. TODAY S READINGS: Galatians 5:1-6; Luke 11:37-41 For in Christ... the only thing that counts is faith working through love. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 13 Who likes walls? Because of their demand that people follow every prescription of Mosaic law and tradition, the scribes and Pharisees excluded many people, especially the poor and the sick, from the ranks of the righteous. Today we d say they sweated the small stuff while ignoring the people most in need, sealing God behind a wall of regulations. Jesus, on the other hand, ignored and removed barriers, welcoming everyone. Perhaps Jesus had a bit of Robert Frost s Yankee wisdom: Something there is that doesn t love a wall. In our own zeal for being right and lawabiding we need to remember Jesus who knew that God is not the property of the best and brightest or even the rightest. God is the God of all, especially those who have no one to depend on but God. TODAY S READINGS: Galatians 5:18-25; Luke 11:42-46 If you are led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 14 FEAST OF CALLISTUS 1, POPE, MARTYR A riches to rags to riches story Before he became pope the young Saint Callistus was the manager of an investment fund. Somehow through carelessness and foolishness he lost it all to bad investments. As punishment he was sent to the mines of Sardinia, where he embraced Christianity and, when released, went to work for the church. He did such a good job that they made him pope. He was martyred in 222 after preserving and organizing the relics of the saints in the catacombs. It makes you wonder if the solution to our present economic nightmare is to send crooked bankers to the mines of Sardinia! TODAY S READINGS: Ephesians 1:1-10; Luke 11:47-54 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 15 FEAST OF TERESA OF JESUS, VIRGIN, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH With God you re never alone Prayer can be lonely at times as we struggle to feel the nearness of God s presence. It s a comfort to know that even the great saint and doctor of the church Teresa of Avila also struggled with loneliness. No matter how much or how intensely she prayed, she d sometimes feel a distance between herself and God. Using the words of the psalms, Teresa wrote, I have watched and become as a sparrow alone on the housetop (Psalm 102). Though suffering the pain of loneliness, Teresa assures us that God is right there with us and can use even our emptiness as a vehicle of grace. When you are like a sparrow alone on the heights, crying out into the vastness of the sky, what calls you away from the edge? TODAY S READINGS: Ephesians 1:11-14; Luke 12:1-7 Do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 16 FEAST OF MARGARET MARY ALACOQUE, VIRGIN Have a heart Devotion to the physical heart of Jesus goes back to the Middle Ages, but it really did not become widespread until a Visitation sister, Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, had a series of visions between 1673 and 1675 that gave a clearer shape to the devotion. Though prayer to Jesus in his Sacred Heart became one of the most popular devotions in the history of Catholicism, it did have its opponents, who thought it meant separating the human part of Jesus from the divine and worshipping it idolatry, in other words. What they failed to see was that the Sacred Heart testified to the Incarnation: How God took human form and showed God s mercy and love for humanity. Adore Jesus humanity by showing that same mercy and love. TODAY S READINGS: Ephesians 1:15-23; Luke 12:8-12 I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints by TrueQuest Communications, L.L.C.
