3 June 20, 2010 Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three NOTES FROM FATHER BOB TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 2010 FATHER S DAY Jesus began his ministry by announcing the kingdom of God. He called disciples to follow him and then revealed to them, by his miracles, his exorcisms, and his teaching, what God s rule meant. He had aroused opposition in Nazareth early on when he said that God was as much concerned about saving Gentiles as Jews. The disciples had discounted this and were dazzled by his powers. Now, in today s Gospel, Jesus questions his disciples about his true identity, and so, having heard what the crowds say about him, the Messiah. But Jesus needs to qualify this answer by adding a truth which the disciples would not welcome. They shared the popular expectation of a Messiah who would bring Israel salvation by defeating their enemies by force. But are power and violence the answer? Jesus had already put behind him that satanic temptation in the desert. Jesus now tells them that he will be a Messiah who will certainly give life through being raised after three days. But that life will come THROUGH suffering, rejection by the authorities, and the shame of the cross. Jesus says this not because he likes suffering but because unless he tackles the root cause of sin, he cannot bring about a genuine salvation. He has to reject the spiral of violence which is part of the Jewish nationalist dream for liberation. What he offers in its place is a self-giving love, a sacrificial love that has the power to touch those who gaze upon the cross with the eyes of faith. It is a love that, through the power of the resurrection, can unite and not divide. Jesus knows his death is inevitable but now he needs to tell his disciples that they must follow on the same path only by risking their life for his sake will they gain it. Like the disciples, we get used to Jesus company. We, too, are dazzled by his miracles and his teaching. We are used to seeing the cross as a decoration on the church wall or as a piece of jewelry. We have heard his words about the cross many times before. But let s try to hear those words anew, as if we were hearing them for the first time. Is what he says true? Must we risk losing our life in order to gain it? Can t we just carry on in the same old way, where our religion does not really make many demands on us but gives us comfort? Surely we can save our life but NOT lose it. At some stage each one of us will be called to live the promises of our baptism, which call us to die with Christ in order to live with him. It may not be as dramatic a choice as life or death, but it may involve a choice against racism, status-seeking, the worship of money; or it may mean making the hard decision to follow the moral and social teachings of the Church when the society around us may ridicule us for it. Then we can make the choice for ourselves: do we really believe in Christ s words, that losing our life for his sake will bring us true life? FATHER S DAY 2010 Let us each take this opportunity to thank all of our FATHERS for their dedication and love, starting with our HEAVENLY FATHER, who created us in his own image and likeness. May all of our fathers in the parish have a blessed day filled with the thanks, respect, and love that we truly feel for them. Your role in being an instrument of the Father s love in the world is greatly appreciated by your family. Have a great day filled with rest, relaxation, good food, and great praise. Our prayers and thoughts are with each of you today and always. May God fill you with his grace and blessings. Happy Father s Day, Fr. Bob Pastor

4 Page Four Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 20, 2010 Invest just five minutes a day, and your faith will deepen and grow a day at a time. SUNDAY, JUNE 20, 2010 TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME; FATHER S DAY Heirs of the kingdom Wouldn t it be great to be sitting on a really nice inheritance? You could certainly relax a little. Today we honor our fathers, but did they set us up for the rest of our lives? For most of us, no. Saint Paul, though, says we are heirs according to the promise. While we can t earn God s kingdom, we are the children of God destined to inherit it. That should certainly take some of the desperate worry out of life. Now we can get about the business of taking care of others as we have been taken care of. TODAY S READINGS: Zechariah 12:10-11; 13:1; Galatians 3:26-29; Luke 9:18-24 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham s offspring, heirs according to the promise. MONDAY, JUNE 21 FEAST OF ALOYSIUS GONZAGA, RELIGIOUS Keep good counsel How does a young man born to privilege and prestige decide to give it all up and join a religious order? Aloysius Gonzaga ( ) decided to do just that. He renounced his right to the title of marquis and the vast wealth that came with it to enter the Society of Jesus. What motivated his decision? Two clues: Gonzaga had received his First Communion from Saint Charles Borromeo, and his spiritual director was Saint Robert Bellarmine. Perhaps these two spiritual giants had something to do with Gonzaga s life-changing decision. Seek good counsel on the direction your own life is taking. God can speak to us through others; pick good spokespersons. TODAY S READINGS: 2 Kings 17:5-8, 13-15a, 18; Matthew 7:1-5 The measure you give will be the measure you get. bite into a fig bar, take a moment to recall its long heritage and give thanks to the source of all of life s nourishment. TODAY S READINGS: 2 Kings 22:8-13; 23:1-3; Matthew 7:15-20 You will know them by their fruits. THURSDAY, JUNE 24 SOLEMNITY OF THE NATIVITY OF JOHN THE BAPTIST Small wonder Some Bible scholars believe Jesus had been a disciple of John the Baptizer during his youth before he began his public ministry. But once Jesus comes on the scene, John fades into the background. So today s a good day to remember the importance of people who are seldom in the spotlight, whether others or ourselves. Recognize that even small actions and choices are significant; they either build up the community of faith or they do not. The power of a kind word, an act of honest forgiveness, coming to the defense or help of someone such concrete actions, often unnoticed, can be the loosening of the sandal strap that may seem unimportant to everyone except of course to the person whose feet are hurting. TODAY S READINGS: Isaiah 49:1-6; Acts 13:22-26; Luke 1:57-66, 80 One is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of the sandals on his feet. FRIDAY, JUNE 25 Wholly healing We all know the stories of Jesus healing people with leprosy. Just another example of Jesus curing people and revealing his divinity, right? Well, yes, but that s not the whole picture. Because leprosy was an infectious disease, people with it were often outcasts, forced to live on the fringes of society. They were cut off from their community, loved ones, and all that was home to them. In a culture where community and family ties were so important, this isolation was devastating. When Jesus heals a leper, he is not only curing the individual, he is healing an entire community, making it whole. Who are the ones on the fringes of our faith community and society? What can we do to bring healing to them and everyone? TODAY S READINGS: 2 Kings 25:1-12; Matthew 8:1-4 Be made clean! TUESDAY, JUNE 22 FEAST OF PAULINUS OF NOLA, BISHOP From having to giving A Roman aristocrat in the fourth and fifth centuries, Saint Paulinus had wealth, a fine classical education, a legal and political career, and was known throughout the Roman world. After his marriage, though, he and his Spanish wife Theresia suffered the loss of their infant child and from then on turned toward lives of service. They gradually liquidated their wealth and gave it to the poor. The people of Barcelona demanded Paulinus be ordained a priest, and he and Theresia opened what we might call an early version of a Catholic Worker house, living on the top floor and providing hospitality to the indigent downstairs. Losses can be forced upon us or they can embraced. Whichever or both you experience, find ways to turn them into opportunities for generosity. TODAY S READINGS: 2 Kings 19:9b-11, 14-21, 31-35a, 36; Matthew 7:6, The gate is narrow and the road is hard that leads to life. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 23 Bear good fruit It is no accident that figs are mentioned at several different points in the gospels. The humble fig may well represent the first known example of agriculture plants intentionally cultivated by humans for food; fossils have been found in the Jordan Valley that date from 9,400-9,200 B.C. So by the time Jesus came on the scene, figs were a well-established staple, and in a sometimes harsh desert climate they offered life-saving nourishment for the body a bit like what Jesus offers for the soul. Next time you SATURDAY, JUNE 26 FEAST OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY Healing your inner Hamlet Shakespeare s most famous decider, Hamlet, is also a bit of a drama queen. Words, words, words! he sighs, conveying his weariness with the emptiness of most promises. He also wonders if life is worth living: To be or not to be that is the question! Compare Hamlet to the centurion in the gospel story, who values both life and the power of words to do what they express. The centurion seeks healing for his servant through a word from Jesus. His faith proves irresistible to Jesus, who learned from his mother that trusting in God s promises could lead to great things. TODAY S READINGS: Lamentations 2:2, 10-14, 18-19; Matthew 8:5-17 Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed by TrueQuest Communications, L.L.C.
