2 Page 2 Parent s Day Parent s Day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of every July in the United States. It is a day for children to honor both of their parents at the same time. Mother s Day falls in May and Father s Day in June, which means Parent s Day completes the trilogy of parental holidays and is a day for children to show their appreciation for their parents on the same day. Parent s Day can be traced back to 1994 when then US President Bill Clinton signed into law a resolution that makes the fourth Sunday of July Parent s Day. That bill was originally introduced to the Senate by Senator Trent Lott. According to the resolution, Parent s Day was created to recognize, uplift and support the role of parents in the rearing of their children. While it was only made a holiday in 1994 in the US, the roots of Parent s Day go back farther. The original bill that was signed by Bill Clinton was endorsed by the Unification Church a South Korean Christian Church that celebrates Parent s Day on May 8 th Fr. K s Fr. Korner K s each year. In South Korea, the holiday is both a public one as well as one observed by the South Korean government. If you look back even further, you ll see that Parent s Day actually began in the 1930s. That is when many Christian groups brought Christianity to the Korean peninsula. Soon, the celebration of Mother s Day became infused with the culture of traditional Korean Confucianism. For many years, Mother s Day was celebrated by individuals in Korea, but it did not become a national holiday until That is when the State Council of South Korea decided that the eighth of May should be celebrated as Mother s Day every year. For a few years it continued on in this way but many people questioned why there wasn t a holiday for fathers. It was only then that a national holiday dedicated to both parents was proposed. Finally, on March 30, 1973, May 8 was established as Parent s Day according to South Koran Presidential Decree. Originally the entire week of May 8 was celebrated as a way to show respect to the elderly, but that was abolished in the 1990s when October was designated as the month for respecting elders. In the US, Parent s Day is not a public holiday but only a national observance; which means that all businesses and government agencies will function as normal. However, on this day many people take time out of their day to show their parents respect, love and appreciation. This is done by children throwing their parents parties, giving (Hallmark!) cards, and other such gifts. Unlike Parent s Day, the Fourth Commandment, to honor thy mother and father, applies not just to children, but adults as well. No matter how old we become, our parents remain our parents, to whom we owe honor and respect every day of their lives. Sometimes, this may involve making difficult decisions for the proper care of our parents as they grow older. As a wise person once said, life inevitably goes full circle. Just as we were cared for by our parents when we were very young, our parents sometimes require the same care as they grow very old. We must never shirk our responsibility towards them, as difficult as this may be. After all, one day we, too, may require special care as we advance in years. God bless you! 5 St. Bridget of Sweden Bridget was the daughter of a wealthy governor who used his riches generously. He donated money for good causes and helped the poor. He worked for the just and fair treatment of all the people. Bridget, who was born in 1303, learned these lessons early in her life. Bridget married into the Swedish royal family and lovingly raised eight children, one of whom came to be known as St. Catherine of Sweden. Bridget and her husband followed her father s example of caring for people in need. It is said that she even arranged for a hospital to be built on their estate. The hospital was open to all. When her husband died, Bridget gave away all her possessions. She founded a double monastery for men and women who lived apart, but worshipped together. The religious order was known as the Order of the Most Holy Saviour, or the Brigittines. When Bridget learned of an epidemic in Rome, she made a pilgrimage there to assist the sick and dying. While in Rome, she spoke out against the injustices she saw and worked to change situations that kept all people from living a good life. Her words and actions influenced government and Church officials, even the pope! Bridget made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land to see the places where Page 5 Jesus taught, died, and rose from the dead. During her pilgrimage Bridget experienced Christ s presence in prayer visions. Bridget died after she returned to Rome, but her body was eventually returned to her land and the people she loved and cared for. Her coffin was carried reverently through Europe to Sweden, and she is buried at the monastery she founded. Because of her holiness, Bridget was declared a saint only 18 years after her death in She is the patron saint of Sweden. In 1999, Pope John Paul II honored her once more: St. Bridget was named co-patron saint of all of Europe along with St. Catherine of Siena and St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, who was known as Edith Stein in life. We honor St. Bridget, also known as St. Birgitta, on July 23 each year. We can pray to Bridget, asking her to help us to love and care for our neighbor as she did. EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS My daughter can easily become overwhelmed by having so much to do. She recently graduated from high school, and many times during those four years, she found herself going crazy from being involved in so many things. Sports, drama, youth group, homework, friends, and more all demanded a slice of her attention. Sometimes the slice of time that remained wasn't much and one does have to sleep! A good everyday steward can get caught up in doing so much and giving so much that he or she loses sight of the fact that you cannot give what you do not have. If you have no time left, you cannot give that. If you have no energy left, you cannot give that. Finally, if you find yourself agitated and overwhelmed, you cannot give that which others benefit from the most: YOU! Even when we plant seeds in a garden after tilling and watering the soil, we must rest and wait for there to be growth. If we do not take time to rest and recharge, we are not allowing time for God's grace to bring forth new life in us. We fear that things will suffer without us, but the truth is that no one is benefiting from our fatigue. We can think we are giving but really we are empty. Take some time and rest in your God. 6 Page 6 Sharing the Gospel Have you ever just wanted to be alone for a while? Jesus and his disciples knew what that felt like. They wanted to be alone to talk and rest, but crowds of people were surrounding them. Even when Jesus and his disciples tried to slip away unnoticed, people followed them anyway. They arrived only to find more crowds of people. This was certainly not the quiet time they had planned on. Being patient and kind, Jesus gave up what he wanted, and he began to teach the crowds. Prayer Dear God, thank you that Jesus gave up what he wanted, just so he could help other people. Help me to follow his example. Please call the Faith Formation office for more information The fourth Sunday of July is National Parents Day, a fairly new observance in the United States. Parental figures in the United States receive the recognition for the role they play in their children s lives on Parents Day. The day aims to promote responsible parenting and to recognize positive parental role models. It celebrates the special bonds of love between parental figures and their children. The following is a prayer for parents. P is for perspective ~ We pray that these parents would keep an eternal focus and would prioritize those things that God says are important. We ask God to give them wisdom and discernment in dealing with us and one another. A is for attitude ~ We ask God to give these parents a positive, cheerful outlook. We pray that the fruit of the Spirit would be evident in their lives and that they model the attitudes of Christ Jesus. R is for relationships ~ We pray God would bless and strengthen parents relationship with him, with one another, and with their children and grandchildren. We pray their marriage would be characterized by an abiding, self-sacrificing love and a deep, heartfelt respect for one another. E is for energy ~ We pray for these hard-working parents that God would refresh and rejuvenate them. That their energy is strengthened and renewed. That they would not grow weary in well-doing but would persevere to the end and finish strong. N is for needs ~ We pray God will provide for all parents need according to the riches of Christ. That they are blessed abundantly, beyond all they ask or think, and that they would serve as an open channel of blessings to others. T is for testimony ~ We pray parents would live their lives with integrity and that God would reward them with a good name. And that they would be salt and light in their community, and that the love of Christ would shine through them to a lost and dying world. S is for security ~ We pray that parents would recognize God as the source of security and ask him to do work in their hearts, conforming them to the image of Christ.
