2 Page 2 Evil in our Church Recently, I was shocked to read about something that I have had misgivings about for a long time. These misgivings have to do with what boils down to an abuse of power by those in high office. Unfortunately, this is true both in our secular society as well as in our Church hierarchy. The most recent shock comes as a very highly placed clergyman, the former Cardinal of Washington, DC, Theodore McCarrick, has resigned from the College of Cardinals amidst pending charges of sexual abuse of altar boys, young seminarians, and even priests by himself as well as his turning a blind eye to such abuse among clergymen in his charge over the years. More than any other institution on earth, the power exercised by clergymen was long looked upon Fr. K s Fr. Korner K s with the utmost respect by nearly all in society. It was seen as reflecting the leadership of Christ Himself, passed on through the ages by our apostolic tradition. To misuse that sacred gift is an abomination of the highest order, particularly when it comes to taking advantage of those unable or too fearful to fight back. The sexual abuse of minors by some members of the clergy, when it first came to light a few years back, has cost the Church much of the respect it once had. In the case of McCarrick, there were hints of problems and rumors of impropriety for a long time. Yet, he was continually pushed up the hierarchical ladder with promotion after promotion. There was almost a code of silence among his colleagues, lest exposure of his sins would bring about a backlash of retaliation and disgrace for his accusers. Unfortunately, their reluctance to speak out, their sins of omission, have contributed to his ever-growing number of sins as well as to the emotional scars and number of his victims. I ask you to pray for our Church; to pray for Pope Francis as he confronts such evils as the misuse of power and position among our clergy. Through prayer, help everyone take a good hard look into their hearts, and ask God s help in rooting out all evil intentions that Satan may use to his advantage. Pray for the return of reverence and personal accountability among all, especially our leaders, and for the offices they hold. Help them and thereby all of us better reflect the compassionate, unselfish love of our Savior, and grant all people a sense of personal respect and ever greater responsibility for the sacred trust that their calling as followers of Christ entails. God bless you! Of all his virtues, Christ specifically commends one to us, humility. 'Learn of me for I am meek and humble of heart.' --St. Bernard of Clairvaux Fr. 6 Page 6 Parent Meeting Want to know what is happening this year in Youth Ministry? From 6:30-7:30 pm, Monday August 27th, we will meet in the youth ministry room located in the school building to chat about all our upcoming events! If there is anything you need please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to serving you in any way I can! jenifercwiek@gmail.com In keeping with the theme of celebrating saints, Monday was the Memorial of St. Maximillian Kolbe. He was a Polish Franciscan who volunteered to die in place of a stranger in Auschwitz. From an early age Maximilian had a strong devotion to Mary and became a Conventual Franciscan along with his brother. He was sent to study at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and in seeing anti-catholic demonstrations, he decided to form the Malitia Immaculate. He was innovative in his use of modern media, especially printing technology and radio, for catechesis, publishing first a monthly magazine and then a daily newspaper that soon had the widest circulation in Poland. During the 1930 s he started a mission in Japan and built a monastery in Nagasaki that was one of the few buildings left undamaged by the atomic bomb dropped at the end of WWII. Because he hid Jews from the Nazis in the monastery the Gestapo arrested him and eventually transferred him to Auschwitz. When three prisoners escaped, the camp commandant selected ten men to die by starvation. One of the men cried out, My wife! My children! and Maximilian volunteered to take his place. He survived for two weeks, outliving the others, dying only when the guards injected him with carbolic acid. He was canalized by Pope John Paul II and is the patron saint of journalists, amateur radio operators and prisoners. Again I urge you as individuals or families to spend some time this summer reading about the lives of saints. Joyce Hansen, DRE Announcing the New Family Center According to Unleash the Gospel there are action steps that families should take to ensure that their whole family is joyful, intentional missionary disciples. The first step to anything like this is formation and evangelization. Therefore we have, over the summer, put together a Family Center for all families of the parish to use. It has a variety of information and activities pertaining to Catholic families. In putting together the Family Center the goal was aimed at helping us to live out the Church s mission and vision for our families. Series topics include parenting, fatherhood and family prayer life, as well as two of St. John Paul II s famous messages for the family Letter to Families and The Family in the Modern World. The center will officially open on Monday, Sept. 17 th, the first day of Faith Formation classes. We invite any and all families of any makeup to come and take advantage of the items included in the center. If you there is something you would like us to include please contact the Faith Formation office ( ) and we will be happy to look into adding it to the Family Center. We would like to thank the St. Theresa Circle and the Kolbe Council of the Knights of Columbus for the financial assistance in getting this center together. It was truly a labor of love!
