1 Saint Anthony Catholic Church Belleville Michigan MARCH 18, 2018 FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT Fr. K s Korner St. Joseph s Day St. Joseph s Day is celebrated o n March 19, and is in W e s t e r n Christianity the principal feast day of St. Joseph, the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the foster-father of Jesus Christ. St. Joseph is the Patron Saint of the dying, the Universal Church, families, and working people in general. Joseph was a carpenter, a working man, and not rich. Although promised in marriage to Mary, before formally bringing her into his home, he found that she was with child. Knowing that the child was not his, he intended to divorce her quietly, and thus not expose her to public shame and cruelty. Shortly thereafter, Joseph was told in a dream that he should not hesitate to take Mary as his wife, because the child was the Son of the Most High, who would save many from sin. Forever after, he raised and protected Jesus as his own. When he went up to the Temple in Jerusalem to have Jesus circumcised, he offered two turtle doves, an offering only allowed to those who could not afford a lamb. It is believed that Joseph was an older man who died before Jesus entered the public ministry. This would explain his virtual absence from scripture after Jesus grew into adulthood. March 19 th was dedicated to St. Joseph in several Western calendars by the 10 th Century, and this custom was established in Rome by Pope Pius V extended its use to the entire Church on July 14, On May 1, 1955, Pope Pius XII established an additional feast of St. Joseph, St. Joseph the Worker, to coincide w i t h t h e c e l e b r a t i o n o f International Worker s Day (May Day) in many countries. In the United States, St. Joseph s Day has been traditionally celebrated in special ways in communitie s w ith a high proportion of Italians and Poles. In New Orleans, for example, there are parades in honor of St. Joseph similar to the parades celebrating Mardi Gras and St. Patrick s Day. Tradition in New Orleans also holds that by burying a small statue of St. Joseph upside down in the front yard of a house, that house will sell more promptly. Americans of Polish ancestry, especially in the Midwest and New England, who have the name Joseph celebrate St. Joseph s Day as an imieniny, or a Name Day. As a symbol of ethnic pride, and in solidarity with their Italian counterparts, Polish Catholic Parishes often hold St. Joseph s Day feasts, complete with ethnic foods placed on St. Joseph Tables, or St. Joseph s Altars, displaying statues and holy cards of St. Joseph.

6 Page 6 Youth News Sharing the Gospel When you act bossy, selfish, or rude, no one will want to spend time with you. You will be lonely and unhappy. Follow the example of Jesus instead. Be strong in your faith. Do all that God asks you to do, even when it is not easy. Be honest. Be kind. Share what you have been given. Be helpful. Forgive. Show everyone what God is like. When you follow Jesus' example, you won't be lonely. When people around you see that your faith is real, they will come to you for help. They will want to know what makes you different. Then you can point them to Jesus. Prayer God, help me to follow Jesus. I want to show everyone how great you really are PO Box , New Berlin, WI x LPiResourceCenter.com Living the Word March 18 th As we move into spring, plant some seeds as a family. This project can be as simple as planting a few grass seeds or herbs in a pot in your living room. As each member scatters their seeds, let them name something they wish to die to so that they may experience the joy of new life on Easter with Christ. Encourage everyone to notice the signs of spring all around as they go about their week and report back on them over dinner as they prepare to grow something new in their lives. The fifth weekend of Lent has the RCIA going through the Third and final Scrutiny and the Presentation of the Lord s Prayer. The scrutiny this week has their spirits filled with Christ who is the resurrection and the life from the gospel of Lazarus. The presentation today of the Lord s Prayer fills them with a deeper realization of the new spirit of adoption by which they will call God their Father, especially in the midst of the Eucharistic assembly. Today we hear from the Psalm, My hope is in you. St. Anthony Claret says, I believe Lord, but let me believe more firmly. I hope Lord, but let me hope more surely. I love Lord, but let me love more warmly. I repent Lord, but let me repent more deeply. Give me humility, meekness, charity and patience. Teach me goodness, knowledge, and discipline. Give me your love together with your grace and I will be rich enough. Such GREAT words to live by! What most keeps you from hoping to share Christ s life? ~Joyce Hansen, DRE Dipping In the Well Lent always seems to help me renew my relationship with God and strengthen my religious practice. Do you have any suggestions as to what I could do to achieve that the rest of the year? The obvious answer may seem to be to do whatever you do during Lent all year round. But part of the power of Lent is that we focus as a community on renewing our faith and preparing for Easter. Our Lenten practices have a purpose and a goal. Therein lies the secret. When we focus our efforts on one virtue, or try to change one bad habit, or seek to deepen our understanding of one aspect of faith, we focus our efforts and give our full attention to what we are trying to accomplish. We tend to be more successful achieving our goals. More importantly, it has a ripple effect in our lives: one thing changes or is added to the spiritual mix of our lives and many aspects are changed. All too often we leave our spiritual growth to chance and the practice of faith to habit, and then wonder why we have no sense of growth or progress. Think of it in terms of exercise. We walk, lift weights, bend and stretch to attain the maximum benefit from what we do. In addition, to keep those benefits, we eat healthful food and get enough vitamins and rest. Spirituality requires the same kind of attention: we pray, fast, read the Bible, receive sacraments, and do charitable work to maximize the benefits of practicing faith. Keeping Lent year round keeps us in spiritual shape!
