3 A N N O U N C E M E N T S PARISH APPRECIATION BREAKFAST The students want to show their appreciation to the parish for all the support parishioners given to campus ministry. They will be preparing breakfast after the 7:30am and 10am Mass this Sunday, October 14 th upstairs in the Multiversity Room. MEN S SUPPORT GROUP Join other men as they explore over 5 weeks those values and characteristics that lead one on the road to maturity. This group meets on Thursdays, 7-8:30 PM, Oct 18 Nov15. SING OUT! a vocal workshop for shy and notso-shy singers with Cal's emerita Director of Choirs Dr. Marika Kuzma - As St. Augustine of Hippo once said, "When we sing, we pray twice." Newman parishioner and Cal Professor Kuzma, who led the choirs and solo vocal program in the music department for twenty-five years, will lead an hour-long workshop on the body-mind-spirit aspects of singing, leading you through simple, effective group exercises and explorations. These simple hints can help you enjoy congregational singing at Newman (and singing anywhere!) even more. Her approach combines insights from her work onstage in music and in theater as an actor as well. This will take place on Sunday, October 28 th after the 10am Mass in the Hecker Room. NEWMAN NONVIOLENT PEACEMAKERS In collaboration with the Fr. Bill O Donnell Social Justice Committee, we invite you to a screening of the new documentary: The Truth: Lost at Sea on Monday, Oct. 29, 7-9pm in the Hecker Room. This is the true story of a humanitarian effort to alleviate the suffering of the besieged people of Gaza and the fate of those who tried to help them. Hope to see you there! NEWMAN FICTION GROUP The Newman Fiction Group will not be meeting in November. At our December meeting we will discuss Dalva, by Jim Harrison, the story of a woman who returns to her prairie roots as she seeks the son she placed for adoption many years before. 5 Canonization of Óscar Romero Oct 14 For me, the canonization of Óscar Romero is evidence of the Church s commitment to justice. Saints are models of the people we should aspire to be like in our own paths to sainthood. As a champion of social justice and advocate for the poor, Óscar Romero reminds me that if our hearts are open to God, our hands should be open towards the most vulnerable in our community. This was a practice of Romero s daily life and one that we all must emulate. Yet for all of the lessons we can derive from Romero s life, the greatest lessons come from his death and martyrdom. Romero steadfastly opposed El Salvador s military dictatorship, and he was murdered while celebrating Mass in willful opposition to a government he openly admonished for torturing and executing its citizens. The circumstances of his death highlight his dedication to his faith and his dedication to his people. For Romero, serving God was not about hiding in the shadows or speaking in whispers. Romero served his flock openly and loudly. He spoke out against the injustices the government perpetuated in his homeland not with fearlessness, but with godliness. Óscar Romero s courage lives on in our everyday fights against oppression. These battles rage on everywhere, including in Romero s beloved Central America. In Nicaragua the country my parents fled after a revolution I see Romero in the brave populace struggling to achieve the freedom and equality its government promised almost forty years ago. I see Romero in the priests siding with protesters, demanding that the government stop targeting and killing its youth. I see Romero in the youth itself, in the young people risking their lives to march in the streets and call attention to government corruption. I see Romero in my cousin, displaced for his attempts to rebuild the university where governmental attacks interrupted his studies. A couple of years before his death, Romero declared, "When the Church hears the cry of the oppressed, it cannot but denounce the social structures that give rise to and perpetuate the misery from which the cry arises." Romero s canonization reminds me that we are not alone when we insist that those in power use that power for good. - Andrea Nunez (Newman Parishioner and Cal Law Student) Note: Pope Francis will canonize Oscar Romero in Rome on Oct 14.
