3 RCIA (RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS) Interested in becoming Catholic or completing the Sacraments? RCIA meets Thursdays at 7:30pm in the Lounge. If you re already Catholic, consider being a sponsor for one of the candidates making the journey. This is an excellent opportunity to re-invigorate your own faith commitment. At 8pm, we have Adoration where you can be with our Lord in silence and in praise & worship. We also offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation at the same time. Then at 9pm, we have a candlelight weekday Mass. CONGRATULATIONS BRIAN KONZMAN, SJ - His diaconate ordination is Sat, Oct. 21 at 10:00am at the Cathedral of Christ the Light, Oakland. Brian will be serving with us as a deacon throughout the year as he finishes his studies. He is continuing Fr. Bob s ministry to athletes and will be working with Colleen helping with our liturgies. In the spring, he will be ordained with the Jesuit s East Coast Province. GETTING MARRIED? Congratulations! Part of getting married is attending a Marriage Preparation program, and Newman s next one is scheduled for Sat, Oct. 28 (with a welcome dinner on Friday evening, October 27). This is a great opportunity to understand where each of you has come from and where you want to go together. For those of you who attended our 50 th Anniversary, you were able to experience how wonderful Newman is because of all our wonderful parishioners. But you may have wondered why certain folks were missing. We know people live such busy lives and so many because of earlier commitments missed out on a wonderful celebration. Part of the reason for people s absence was because we were slow in sending out invitation notices so folks could reserve the date. Just to let you know, both Bishop Barber and Bishop Cummins sent their regrets of not being able to attend but they had other commitments already. They wanted to attend. The same was true for Fr. Eric Andrews, CSP, president of the Paulists, and past Paulists, Fr. Dick Sparks, Fr. Bernie Campbell, Fr. Bill Edens, and Fr. Dat Tran. The next big party, we ll need to be better about getting invitations out early. Fr. Dick Chilson wanted to come but I believe he did not have a ride from SF. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL OF ALAMEDA COUNTY FUNDRAISER - Join Friends for an Evening of Fellowship and Fundraising hosted by St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County. 5 Buongiorno, Berkeley! The flights from Rome, Italy to California total about 11 hours in the air. It s a long time to sit in a tight plane seat a challenge even for a very hardy traveler. But traversing the differences between day-to-day life in Rome and daily life in Berkeley is an equally challenging trip. I accepted this move to Berkeley so that in this, my seventh assignment as a Paulist priest, I would be within easy visiting distance of my family in Seattle. Berkeley has always held an attraction for me. Back in 1963 when my brother Joe and I both graduated from Seattle University, he enrolled here as a graduate student in physics. He didn t complete his PhD here; that came later at Stanford. But during the couple of years he was here, I was in the army stationed at Fort Ord on Monterey Bay. It was a simple trip up to visit him. So I came periodically to see Joe and explore the Bay Area. Now, here I am again over 50 years later living here myself. I am still in the process of learning my way around this city and the beautiful Bay Area. When I visited back in the 60 s, there was no BART, big demonstrations on campus were a new thing, and there were fewer buildings on campus. And most significantly for this community, the Newman Center was a picturesque old house on the north side of campus. My four years of living and working in Rome, helping to staff a parish for Americans living in or visiting Rome, were an extraordinary opportunity to come to know and appreciate one of the most ancient and beautiful cities in the world. But it was strange to me, unlike anything I had done before. Now I am back in the world of the familiar: modern buildings, English language, and a very different diet less pasta and more potatoes. Of most interest to me now will be getting to know this parish, discovering what I can contribute to the ministry of the Paulist community here, and making this my newest home. At the 50 th anniversary celebration I met many people who love this place deeply, have good friends here, and see this as their faith home. I have seen how much of the activity here is led by lay people, many of them students, and how prayerful the liturgies are all signs of a healthy parish and campus ministry. The beautiful giant sequoias in front of Newman remind me of the passing of the years since I came here to visit Joe. They are not the years of ancient Rome but like Rome they are years that tell the story of a people and a vision. For whatever number of years I am here, I will be part of that story. I look forward to the adventure that lies ahead. Fr. Steve Bossi
