MARY JANE MJ BURKE a member of the Newman Community for 40 years passed away on June 11 th. An active participant in many Newman ministries over the years, she was also, for many, their first contact with the Newman Hall community. A warm welcoming presence, she became a treasured friend and mentor to many both individually and through her participation in Newman s ministries: RCIA, Eucharistic Ministers, a founding member of the LGBT and AIDS ministries and many others. Following her retirement, she continued working at Newman as the Front Desk Receptionist. A woman of grace in her life as well as her passing, she will be missed by many but remembered by more for her commitment to love, to service, and to her Newman community. A Memorial Mass for MJ will be held Saturday, July 11 th, at 1 P.M. followed by a reception in the Hecker Room. A N N O U N C E M E N T S SHARING YOUR GIFTS SACRISTANS NEEDED In order for our Liturgies to flow, to be welcoming and beautiful, someone takes care of the preparation and clean-up of the bread and wine, the cups and plates, the candles, the liturgical books, the cloths, sound and lighting. If you feel drawn to this ministry, please complete a Sacristan Ministry form in the lobby and leave it at the Reception Desk. CHAPEL CLEANING CREW Maintaining a clean and welcoming sacred space is essential to our communal worship. If you need some stress-free quiet time while making a difference for the community, consider joining the crew. Fill out a Chapel Cleaning Ministry form and leave it at the Receptionist desk. LINEN CLEANING CREW Newman is in need of additional crewmembers to help with the care and cleaning of altar linen. Members pick up the used linen from the sacristy, wash and iron them, and return them the following weekend. Contact: Mary Spear, or QUOTE FROM LAUDATO SI Disregard for the duty to cultivate and maintain a proper relationship with my neighbour, for whose care and custody I am responsible, ruins my relationship with my own self, with others, with God and with the earth. When all these relationships are neglected, when justice no longer dwells in the land, the Bible tells us that life itself is endangered. ( 70) -*- SIMPLY STUDENTS -*- KNITTING CIRCLE- Know how to knit or want to learn to knit and make scarves for the homeless? Join us on Tue, 5-7pm in the lobby under the staircase. ROSARY GROUP - Need an oasis of peace and prayer to get a lift on life? Though led by student, all parishioners are welcomed to join Rosary Group on Wed at 8pm in the Gallery Room to pray a Mystery of the Rosary. BIBLE STUDY Come join other students to explore the power of the Word of God. We meet on Sat, 2pm in the Hecker Room. MORE EVENTS & FURTHER DETAILS CAN BE FOUND IN THE ONLINE BULLETIN AT CALNEWMAN.ORG
4 Being a Sacristan One thing Newman-Holy Spirit is noted for is our beautiful liturgies. All things of beauty however take work. So there are a lot of behind the scenes activities to make our Masses so beautiful. One of those essential behind the scenes folks is the sacristan. A sacristan comes early to set up the sanctuary space for Mass by turning on the lights, lighting the pillar candles by the altar and unlocking the tabernacle. In the sacristy, we set up a tray with the sacred vessels patens (plates) and chalices; altar linens purificators (for cleaning the chalice after each use) and corporal (to collect any stray crumbs during the breaking of the bread); and hand washing bowl, water, and towel. This tray is placed on the credence table behind the altar. The sacristan also sets up the liturgical books for the priest, which includes the Roman Missal (the official book for how to celebrate Mass), presider binder (has our local additions like Prayers of the Faithful and Mass Announcements), and song binder. The Sacristan also sets up on the gift table in the back of the church, the gifts of bread and wine to be brought to the altar for consecration. This consists of un-consecrated hosts topped with a large host and wine in a pitcher. The Lectionary (book which has the Scripture readings) is also placed in the back of the church, so the lector can process with it at the beginning of Mass. Two volunteers from the congregation are identified to bring up the gifts. Collection baskets are placed in the front pew. After Mass the sacristan cleans the sacred vessels and tidies up the sacristy in preparation for the next Mass. We are always in need for sacristans, especially the 10 pm candle light Mass or any other Mass. If you are interested, please let us know by filling out a salmoncolored form in the Lobby on the table by the stairs or ing me at: sacristan@calnewman.org Sacristan ministry has been part of my life and others for many years. We feel rewarded knowing our contribution makes a difference. Christine Dalton, sacristan
