1 SUNDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2017 Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time "The Church is called to come out of herself and to go to the peripheries, not only in the geographical sense but also to go to the existential peripheries: those of the mysteries of sin, of pain, of injustice, of ignorance and of religious indifference, of thought, of all misery. Bergoglio's Conclave

4 Student Detroit Mission Trip January 13-15, 2018 Applications due Tuesday October Detroit Trip You've heard about economic challenges in Detroit - its 60% drop in population over the last half century, its manufacturing jobs being outsourced, its infrastructure collapses, and its economic state of emergency. But do you know about Detroit's advent of economic and community development? This Martin Luther King weekend students from the Sheil Catholic Center will have the opportunity to hear the stories of community leaders making a difference in Detroit. This service-learning trip will use the fundamental tenets of Catholic Social Teaching to enter into a greater understanding and appreciation for the grass roots work being done in Detroit and in our own communities. For more information contact Tim Higgins or go to our website sheilcatholiccenter.org. Fall Kairos Retreat November 3-5, 2017 STUDENTS: Come to the Kairos Retreat, Sheil's fall retreat experience. The retreat will take place November 3-5. We will gather at Sheil at 5:00 p.m. on the 3rd and leave at 5:30. We will return to Sheil by 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 5. Cost for the retreat is $50 and scholarships are available ( Mary at m-deeley@northwestern.edu for scholarship info). A $20 deposit will hold your place. Confirmation and a deposit is due October 22 by the end of the day. We'll see you there. For more retreat information, Jacob jacobwebb2020@u.northwestern.edu.

5 New Landscaping Celebration Garden Check out the plans on the board in the Commons to view the concept for Sheil's Celebration Garden, south of our building. In cooperation with the University, we are re-landscaping that area to enhance our curb appeal and to make a more natural garden which supports birds and butterflies. It s hard to see any tree go, but the trees that were there were all non-natives that were not supportive of declining local wildlife, and were growing through the fence. We love trees, and are planning to plant new trees, and shrubs, perennials and grasses, that will provide shelter, nectar and food for birds and butterflies. The plan calls for a Red Oak, a Tupelo, Witch Hazel, Dogwood, Crab apple, Pines and Firs. The new garden areas will still allow for celebrations to happen on the lawn-and we are calling it the Celebration Garden. We will end up with a much nicer space that is more supportive of birds, butterflies, and us humans. Volunteers Needed for the Sheil Sunday Nursery Student volunteers are needed in the Sheil Nursery for Sunday morning Masses. The nursery is open to infants, toddlers and preschool children. If you would like to serve our community as a nursery volunteer please contact Natalie Conrardy. at nlake@orthosns.com. Student Almost Silent Retreat December STUDENTS: Sheil has a unique retreat experience! Have you ever wondered what it might be like to build your day around prayer and silence or what the life of a monk is like? Come to the almost silent retreat after exams have finished and find out. We will live the life of the Cictercian monks in New Melleray, Iowa for two days, December (Monday through Wednesday) The cost is $75 and scholarships are available. You will need to plan your holiday travel differently, but you won't regret it. If you need a place to stay before we leave, we will help arrange that. Space is limited, but if you are interested register at bit.ly/2fwk7jy October is Fair Trade Month! Catholic Social Teaching calls us to respect the rights of workers, "If the dignity of work is to be protected, then the basic rights of workers must be respected--the right to productive work, to decent and fair wages, to the organization and joining of unions, to private property, and to economic initiative." (USCCB) Contribute to improving the livelihoods of artisans and growers abroad by purchasing ethically sourced goods. Go shopping through the Catholic Relief Services website page for ethical trade..

6 Sunday October 29-3:00-5:00 p.m. Be a part of history! After a year of preparation, Evanston Catholic and Lutheran churches, including Sheil, will celebrate the creation of our ecumenical covenant.
